    Critical Lines and Massive Phases in Quantum Spin Ladders with Dimerization

    We determine the existence of critical lines in dimerized quantum spin ladders in their phase diagram of coupling constants using the finite-size DMRG algorithm. We consider both staggered and columnar dimerization patterns, and antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic inter-leg couplings. The existence of critical phases depends on the precise combination of these patterns. The nature of the massive phases separating the critical lines are characterized with generalized string order parameters that determine their valence bond solid (VBS) content.Comment: 9 pages 10 figure

    Towards artistic education with textiles: a sustainable challenge with K-10 children

    Making art with textiles has become part of the development process of creative potential that has led to the acquisition of different types of skills strongly correlated to the success of the textile and clothing industry. There are objectives defined in the curricula of basic education and pre-school education (K10 children) that tackle the artisanal process of transforming raw textile materials: these include acquiring knowledge of textile materials, highlighting the importance of handicrafts in culture and heritage, textile arts and the development of fine motor skills. The objective of this study is to learn about the practices of K10 children using textiles in schools, and to understand how these practices contribute to the development of their creative potential with regard to the area of textiles and clothing. Integrating the activities with textiles makes sensitization to the ma-terials and techniques of the textile arts possible, and paves the way for greater sustainability of this sector in Portuguese society.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Electromagnetic multipole moments of elementary spin-1/2, 1, and 3/2 particles

    We study multipole decompositions of the electromagnetic currents of spin-1/2, 1, and 3/2 particles described in terms of Lagrangians designed to reproduce representation specific wave equations which are second order in the momenta and which emerge within the recently elaborated Poincar\'e covariant projector method. We calculate the electric multipoles of the above spins for the spinor, the four-vector, and the four-vector--spinor representations, attend to the most general non-Lagrangian spin-3/2 currents which are allowed by Lorentz invariance to be of third order in the momenta and construct the linear current equivalent of identical multipole moments of one of them. We conclude that such non-Lagrangian currents are not necessarily more general than the two-term currents emerging within the covariant projector method. We compare our results with those of the conventional Proca-, and Rarita-Schwinger frameworks. Finally, we test the representation dependence of the multipoles by placing spin-1 and spin-3/2 in the respective (1,0)\oplus(0,1), and (3/2,0)\oplus(0,3/2) single-spin representations. We observe representation independence of the charge monopoles and the magnetic dipoles, in contrast to the higher multipoles, which turn out to be representation dependent. In particular, we find the bi-vector (1,0)(0,1)(1,0)\oplus (0,1) to be characterized by an electric quadrupole moment of opposite sign to the one found in (1/2,1/2)(1/2,1/2), and consequently, to the WW boson. Our finding points toward the possibility that the ρ\rho meson could transform as part of an antisymmetric tensor with an a1a_{1} meson-like state as its representation companion.Comment: 27 pages, 2 figure

    Sustainable design approaches towards green higher education campus

    The primary goal of our work is to address the issues concerning the application of sustainability concepts in the Higher Education Campus of the Faculty of Architecture at Universidade de Lisboa. Sustainable actions and attitudes are part of the sustainable principles of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted in the 2030 Agenda by all United Nations member states. This exploratory research is based on a review of the international literature specialising in sustainability assessment in Higher Education Institutions. A qualitative research approach was applied, using a questionnaire adapted from the European University Association in 2021, as a research instrument to know the perception and opinion of the Faculty of Architecture (FA) academic community on some of the collective actions of greening. A qualitative interpretation and discussion of the obtained data were performed based on a survey conducted on a non-probabilistic sample selected from Campus users. With this investigation, we intend to know the challenges and initiatives practised on this Campus in defence of sustainability and contribute towards a changeover in the environmental, social, and economic awareness of the campus community.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Naturally split supersymmetry

    Nonobservation of superparticles till date, new Higgs mass limits from the CMS and ATLAS experiments, WMAP constraints on relic density, various other low energy data, and the naturalness consideration, all considered simultaneously imply a paradigm shift of supersymmetric model building. In this paper we perform, for the first time, a detailed numerical study of brane-world induced supersymmetry breaking for both minimal and next-to-minimal scenarios. We observe that a naturally hierarchical spectrum emerges through an interplay of bulk, brane-localized and quasi-localized fields, which can gain more relevance in the subsequent phases of the LHC run.Comment: 6 pages, 6 eps figures; v2: minor updates, to appear in JHE

    Unification through extra dimensions at two loops

    The presence of an extra dimension of size R\equiv M_c^{-1} introduces corrections of order (\mu/M_c)\alpha to the gauge and Yukawa couplings and accelerates their running at scales \mu larger than M_c. This could result in a grand unification scale M_X\approx 20 M_c. We study the corrections at the two-loop level. We find corrections of order (\mu/M_c)\alpha^2 for the gauge couplings and of order (\mu/M_c)^2\alpha^2 for the Yukawa couplings. Therefore, in the Yukawa sector one and two-loop contributions can be of the same order below M_X. We show that in the usual scenarios the dominant gauge and Yukawa couplings are decreasing functions of the scale, in such a way that (\mu/M_c)\alpha becomes approximately constant and two-loop contributions introduce just a 30% correction which does not increase with the scale.Comment: 14 pages, added references, corrected typo
