Giant Magnetoelastic Effects in BaTiO3-based Extrinsic Multiferroic Hybrids
Extrinsic multiferroic hybrid structures consisting of ferromagnetic and
ferroelectric layers elastically coupled to each other are promising due to
their robust magnetoelectric effects even at room temperature. For a
quantitative analysis of these magnetoelectric effects, a detailed knowledge of
the piezoelectric and magnetoelastic behavior of both constituents as well as
their mutual elastic coupling is mandatory. We here report on a theoretical and
experimental study of the magnetic behavior of BaTiO3-based extrinsic
multiferroic structures. An excellent agreement between molecular dynamics
simulations and the experiments was found for Fe50Co50/BaTiO3 and Ni/BaTiO3
hybrid structures. This demonstrates that the magnetic behavior of extrinsic
multiferroic hybrid structures can be determined by means of ab-initio
calculations, allowing for the design of novel multiferroic hybrids
Fragmented Authority from Ancien Régime to Modernity: a Quantitative Analysis
This paper performs a systematic analysis that examines institutional fragmentation in terms of customs tariffs within states west of the Rhine from 1700 to 1815 and between states east of the Rhine from 1815 to 1871. Internal customs zones are measured in two ways: physical size and urban population. Both methods use 175 sample cities as described by De Vries (1984) in England, France, the Netherlands, and Spain as the basic unit of account. The results indicate that customs zones west of the Rhine were small prior to the French Revolution but grew dramatically from 1789 onwards. They thus provide definitive evidence of divided authority in Ancien Régime Europe. The measurement of external customs zones uses 117 sample cities in the German and Italian territories. The findings indicate a remarkable degree of institutional consolidation between states east of the Rhine over the 1800s
Electric fields and valence band offsets at strained [111] heterojunctions
[111] ordered common atom strained layer superlattices (in particular the
common anion GaSb/InSb system and the common cation InAs/InSb system) are
investigated using the ab initio full potential linearized augmented plane wave
(FLAPW) method. We have focused our attention on the potential line-up at the
two sides of the homopolar isovalent heterojunctions considered, and in
particular on its dependence on the strain conditions and on the strain induced
electric fields. We propose a procedure to locate the interface plane where the
band alignment could be evaluated; furthermore, we suggest that the
polarization charges, due to piezoelectric effects, are approximately confined
to a narrow region close to the interface and do not affect the potential
discontinuity. We find that the interface contribution to the valence band
offset is substantially unaffected by strain conditions, whereas the total band
line-up is highly tunable, as a function of the strain conditions. Finally, we
compare our results with those obtained for [001] heterojunctions.Comment: 18 pages, Latex-file, to appear in Phys.Rev.
Spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric constants of III-V nitrides
The spontaneous polarization, dynamical Born charges, and piezoelectric
constants of the III-V nitrides AlN, GaN, and InN are studied ab initio using
the Berry phase approach to polarization in solids. The piezoelectric constants
are found to be up 10 times larger than in conventional III-V's and II-VI's,
and comparable to those of ZnO. Further properties at variance with those of
conventional III-V compounds are the sign of the piezoelectric constants
(positive as in II-VI's) and the very large spontaneous polarization.Comment: RevTeX 4 pages, improved upon revie
The Transcription co-Repressors MTG8 and MTG16 Regulate Exit of Intestinal Stem Cells From Their Niche and Differentiation into Enterocyte vs Secretory Lineages
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Notch signaling maintains intestinal stem cells (ISCs). When ISCs exit the niche, Notch signaling among early progenitor cells at position +4/5 regulates their specification toward secretory vs enterocyte lineages (binary fate). The transcription factor ATOH1 is repressed by Notch in ISCs; its de-repression, when Notch is inactivated, drives progenitor cells to differentiate along the secretory lineage. However, it is not clear what promotes transition of ISCs to progenitors and how this fate decision is established. METHODS: We sorted cells from Lgr5-Gfp knock-in intestines from mice and characterized gene expression patterns. We analyzed Notch regulation by examining expression profiles (by quantitative reverse transcription PCR and RNAscope) of small intestinal organoids incubated with the Notch inhibitor DAPT, intestine tissues from mice given injections of the γ-secretase inhibitor dibenzazepine, and mice with intestine-specific disruption of Rbpj. We analyzed intestine tissues from mice with disruption of the RUNX1 translocation partner 1 gene (Runx1t1, also called Mtg8) or CBFA2/RUNX1 partner transcriptional co-repressor 3 (Cbfa2t3, also called Mtg16), and derived their organoids, by histology, immunohistochemistry, and RNA sequencing. We performed chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequencing analyses of intestinal crypts to identify genes regulated by MTG16. RESULTS: The transcription co-repressors MTG8 and MTG16 were highly expressed by +4/5 early progenitors, compared with other cells along crypt-villus axis. Expression of MTG8 and MTG16 were repressed by Notch signaling via ATOH1 in organoids and intestine tissues from mice. MTG8- and MTG16-knockout intestines had increased crypt hyperproliferation and expansion of ISCs, but enterocyte differentiation was impaired, based on loss of enterocyte markers and functions. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequencing analyses showed that MTG16 bound to promoters of genes that are specifically expressed by stem cells (such as Lgr5 and Ascl2) and repressed their transcription. MTG16 also bound to previously reported enhancer regions of genes regulated by ATOH1, including genes that encode delta-like canonical Notch ligand and other secretory-specific transcription factors. CONCLUSIONS: In intestine tissues of mice and human intestinal organoids, MTG8 and MTG16 repress transcription in the earliest progenitor cells to promote exit of ISCs from their niche (niche exit) and control the binary fate decision (secretory vs enterocyte lineage) by repressing genes regulated by ATOH1
Polarization resolved angular patterns in nematic liquid crystal cells
We study the angular structure of polarization of light transmitted through a
nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cell by theoretically analyzing the polarization
state as a function of the incidence angles. For a uniformly aligned NLC cell,
the matrix formalism and the orthogonality relations are used to
derive the analytical expressions for the transmission and reflection matrices.
The polarization resolved angular patterns in the two-dimensional projection
plane are characterized in terms of the polarization singularities: C points
(points of circular polarization) and L lines (lines of linear polarization).
In the case of linearly polarized plane waves incident on the homeotropically
aligned cell, we present the results of detailed theoretical analysis
describing the structure of the polarization singularities. We apply the theory
to compute the polarization patterns for various orientational structures in
the NLC cell and discuss the effects induced by the director orientation and
biaxiality.Comment: pdflatex, rextex4, 22 pages, 7 figures (jpeg
