    Creating personas for political and social consciousness in HCI design

    Personas have become an important tool for Human-Computer Interaction professionals. However, they are not immune to limitations and critique, including stereotyping. We suggest that while some of the criticisms to personas are important, the use of personas is open to them in part because of an unquestioned focus on explicating user needs and goals in traditional persona research and creation. This focus, while helping designers, obscures some other potentially relevant aspects. In particular, when the goal of the product or software being designed is associated with social and political goals rather than with bringing a product to the market, it may be relevant to focus personas on political aspirations, social values and the will or capacity of personas to take action. We argue that it is possible when producing personas (and associated scenarios) to partially move away from representing needs and embrace personas which more explicitly represent political or social beliefs and values. We also suggest that a phenomenographic approach to user data analysis is one way to achieve this. We provide empirical evidence for our position from two large-scale European projects, the first one in the area of Social Innovation and the second in the area of eParticipation

    Teaching the Prosody of Emotive Communication in a Second Language

    The expression and the perception of emotional states in a foreign language represent a difficult task for the learners. One of the reasons is the fact that, more than other aspects related to speech, the expression of emotional states in second language requires full control of the prosodic resources that contribute to their realization. The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of the main tenets of the interface between prosody and pragmatic competence in L2 and in particular the expression and perception of emotions. The chapter will also outline some of the outcomes of the research in the field, focusing on experimental studies that have been conducted with learners of Italian as L2. The second part of the chapter will be devoted on the instructional practice aimed at developing the awareness of pragmatic-prosodic aspects of emotive communication in speech. Teaching practices such as a training focused on the expression of emotions (anger, joy, sadness, disgust, fear, and surprise) and video dubbing projects have proven to be useful tools to improve the performance of learners both in production and in perception of prosodic patterns of emotional communication

    A decision-making approach for investigating the potential effects of near sourcing on supply chain

    Purpose - Near sourcing is starting to be regarded as a valid alternative to global sourcing in order to leverage supply chain (SC) responsiveness and economic efficiency. The present work proposes a decision-making approach developed in collaboration with a leading Italian retailer that was willing to turn the global store furniture procurement process into near sourcing. Design/methodology/approach - Action research is employed. The limitations of the traditional SC organisation and purchasing process of the company are first identified. On such basis, an inventory management model is applied to run spreadsheet estimates where different purchasing and SC management strategies are adopted to determine the solution providing the lowest cost performance. Finally, a risk analysis of the selected best SC arrangement is conducted and results are discussed. Findings - Switching from East Asian suppliers to continental vendors enables a SC reengineering that increases flexibility and responsiveness to demand uncertainty which, together with decreased transportation costs, assures economic viability, thus proving the benefits of near sourcing. Research limitations/implications - The decision-making framework provides a methodological roadmap to address the comparison between near and global sourcing policies and to calculate the savings of the former against the latter. The approach could include additional organisational aspects and cost categories impacting on near sourcing and could be adapted to investigate different products, services, and business sectors. Originality/value - The work provides SC researchers and practitioners with a structured approach for understanding what drives companies to adopt near sourcing and for quantitatively assessing its advantage

    Grazing impact on soil chemical and biological properties under different plant cover types in a mountain area of Southern Italy.

    Grazing can contribute to soil degradation by compaction due to roaming of livestock and loss of herbaceous cover, affecting also soil microbial community. Aim of this study was to assess grazing impact on soil microbial community and nutrient status under different plant cover types (i.e., fernery, chestnut wood, garigue). Grazed and ungrazed soils were analysed for water holding capacity, pH, organic carbon, N, S, K, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu content, microbial biomass, fungal mycelium and potential respiration. Moreover, some ecophysiological indices, as microbial quotient, coefficient of endogenous mineralization (CEM), metabolic quotient (qCO2) and fungal fraction of microbial carbon were calculated. The results of present study showed that a moderate intensity grazing had low or no impact on chemical characteristics of soils and affects microbial community mainly in grazed areas with lower vegetation cover and lower content of nutrient and organic carbon, compared to areas with a thick layer of vegetation

    Multiscale modeling of synthetic and biological supramolecular systems.

    In this thesis, we exploited the synergistic combination of multiscale molecular modeling, molecular dynamics (MD), and enhanced sampling to tackle two complex systems. In the first case study, we investigated the intrinsic dynamic behavior of a Benzene 1,3,5-TricarboxAmide (BTA) supramolecular polymer in water. In the second case study, we inquired about the effect of functionalized amphiphilic gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the phase behavior of a multi-component lipid membrane. Through our simulations, we gained a deeper understanding of the structure and dynamics of a class of supramolecular polymers. Additionally, we identified the factors that control the exchange of monomers between the different fibers, which can be used to inform the design of novel supramolecular materials in the future. Our simulations provided insights into the mechanisms underlying the interaction between functionalized nanoparticles and lipid membranes, extrapolating the factors that influence the stability of the membrane phase separation. The acquired knowledge can be applied in drug delivery systems or to create new hybrid materials containing ordered two-dimensional NP lattices. In particular, it is worth noting that in both studies, using coarse-grained models with the proper (sub-molecular) resolution was crucial to overcoming the limitations of classic all-atom force fields while maintaining the needed chemical specificity. Overall, the results of these studies have broad implications for materials science and biophysics and demonstrate the potential of computational modeling to inform the design of novel materials and systems
