    Deformation-related volcanism in the Pacific Ocean linked to the Hawaiian-Emperor bend

    Ocean islands, seamounts and volcanic ridges are thought to form above mantle plumes. Yet, this mechanism cannot explain many volcanic features on the Pacific Ocean floor and some might instead be caused by cracks in the oceanic crust linked to the reorganization of plate motions. A distinctive bend in the Hawaiian–Emperor volcanic chain has been linked to changes in the direction of motion of the Pacific Plate, movement of the Hawaiian plume, or a combination of both. However, these links are uncertain because there is no independent record that precisely dates tectonic events that affected the Pacific Plate. Here we analyse the geochemical characteristics of lava samples collected from the Musicians Ridges, lines of volcanic seamounts formed close to the Hawaiian–Emperor bend. We find that the geochemical signature of these lavas is unlike typical ocean island basalts and instead resembles mid-ocean ridge basalts. We infer that the seamounts are unrelated to mantle plume activity and instead formed in an extensional setting, due to deformation of the Pacific Plate. 40Ar/39Ar dating reveals that the Musicians Ridges formed during two time windows that bracket the time of formation of the Hawaiian–Emperor bend, 53–52 and 48–47 million years ago. We conclude that the Hawaiian–Emperor bend was formed by plate–mantle reorganization, potentially triggered by a series of subduction events at the Pacific Plate margins

    Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes have been associated with increased severity of periodontal disease for many years. More recently, the impact of periodontal disease on glycaemic control has been investigated. The role of the oral microbiota in this two-way relationship is at this stage unknown. Further studies, of a longitudinal nature and investigating a wider array of bacterial species, are required in order to conclusively determine if there is a difference in the oral microbiota of diabetics and non-diabetics and whether this difference accounts, on the one hand, for the increased severity of periodontal disease and on the other for the poorer glycaemic control seen in diabetics

    Relative motions between Eurasia and North America in the Bering Sea region

    Knowledge of the relative motion of the North American and Eurasian plates during the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic provides insight into the observed timing and style of deformational events in the Bering Sea region. Periods of strong convergence from ≈ 70 to ≈ 50 Ma (Maastrichtian to Paleocene) are correlated with compressional deformation between the Chukotsk Peninsula and northern Alaska and movement along the Denali fault. The convergence may also be the cause of a previously proposed counterclockwise rotation of western Alaska. Transform motion between these plates from 50 to 38 Ma (Middle to Late Eocene) correlates with subsidence of the Bering Shelf, creation of a series of pull-apart basins along the Bering margin and cessation of calc-alkaline volcanism in western Alaska. Slight compressive convergence from 37 Ma to the present may be responsible for the anticlinal deformation of basin filling sediments in the Anadyr and Khatyrka basins. © 1987

    Two-stage subduction history under North America inferred from multiple-frequency tomography

    Eastward subduction of oceanic tectonic plates has shaped the geologic history of western North America over the past 150 million years. The mountain-building and volcanism that brought forth the spectacular landscapes of the West are credited to the vast ancient Farallon plate, which interacted mechanically and chemically with the overlying continent as it plunged back into the mantle. Here, we use finite-frequency travel-time and amplitude measurements of teleseismic P-waves in seven frequency bands to obtain a high-resolution tomographic image to 1,800 km depth. We discover several large, previously unknown pieces of the plate which show that two distinct stages of whole-mantle subduction are present under North America. The currently active one descends from the Pacific northwest coast to 1,500 km depth beneath the Great Plains, whereas its stalled predecessor occupies the transition zone and lower mantle beneath the eastern half of the continent. We argue that the separation between them is linked to the Laramide era 70-50 Myr ago, a time of unusual volcanism and mountain-building far inland generally explained by an episode of extremely flat subduction. © 2008 Macmillan Publishers Limited
