Assessing the effects of repeated handling on physiology and condition of semi-precocial nestlings
Repeated exposure to elevated levels of glucocorticoids during development can have long-term detrimental effects on survival and fitness, potentially associated with increased telomere attrition. Nestling birds are regularly handled for ecological research, yet few authors have considered the potential for handling-induced stress to influence hormonally-mediated phenotypic development or bias interpretations of subsequent focal measurements. We experimentally manipulated the handling experience of the semi-precocial nestlings of European Storm Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus to simulate handling in a typical field study and examined cumulative effects on physiology and condition in late postnatal development. Neither baseline corticosterone (the primary glucocorticoid in birds), telomere length nor body condition varied with the number of handling episodes. The absence of a response could be explained if Storm Petrels did not perceive handling to be stressful or if there is dissociation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis from stressful stimuli in early life. Eliciting a response to a stressor may be maladaptive for cavity-dwelling young that are unable to escape or defend themselves. Furthermore, avoiding elevated overall glucocorticoid exposure may be particularly important in a long-lived species, in which accelerated early-life telomere erosion could impact negatively upon longevity. We propose that the level of colony-wide disturbance induced by investigator handling of young could be important in underlining species-specific responses. Storm Petrel nestlings appear unresponsive to investigator handling within the limits of handling in a typical field study and handling at this level should not bias physiological and morphological measurements
Inherent temperature effects in magnetic tunnel junctions
Theoretical studies of the temperature dependence of the tunneling magnetoresistance ratio (TMR) are presented. A successful elastic tunneling model has been extended to handle temperature dependence. It treats Fermi smearing and applies Stoner-like behavior to the exchange split band structure in the electrodes to calculate TMR(T). As expected, the effects of Fermi smearing are small, but small changes in the magnetic band structure produce large changes in TMR. For a Co/I/Co junction produced by LeClair et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2933 (2000)], calculations using bulk magnetization predicted 33% of the experimental loss of TMR from 0 to 300 K with only a 1.5% change in magnetization. A mere 3.2% change in magnetization produced 100% of the observed drop in TMR. These results imply larger than imagined intrinsic temperature dependence for TMR. ©2001 American Institute of Physics

Condensing Momentum Modes in 2-d 0A String Theory with Flux
We use a combination of conformal perturbation theory techniques and matrix
model results to study the effects of perturbing by momentum modes two
dimensional type 0A strings with non-vanishing Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux. In the
limit of large RR flux (equivalently, mu=0) we find an explicit analytic form
of the genus zero partition function in terms of the RR flux and the
momentum modes coupling constant alpha. The analyticity of the partition
function enables us to go beyond the perturbative regime and, for alpha>> q,
obtain the partition function in a background corresponding to the momentum
modes condensation. For momenta such that 0<p<2 we find no obstruction to
condensing the momentum modes in the phase diagram of the partition function.Comment: 22 page
Guidelines for the use of cell lines in biomedical research
Cell-line misidentification and contamination with microorganisms, such as mycoplasma, together with instability, both genetic and phenotypic, are among the problems that continue to affect cell culture. Many of these problems are avoidable with the necessary foresight, and these Guidelines have been prepared to provide those new to the field and others engaged in teaching and instruction with the information necessary to increase their awareness of the problems and to enable them to deal with them effectively. The Guidelines cover areas such as development, acquisition, authentication, cryopreservation, transfer of cell lines between laboratories, microbial contamination, characterisation, instability and misidentification. Advice is also given on complying with current legal and ethical requirements when deriving cell lines from human and animal tissues, the selection and maintenance of equipment and how to deal with problems that may arise

Black hole collision with a scalar particle in four, five and seven dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetimes: ringing and radiation
In this work we compute the spectra, waveforms and total scalar energy
radiated during the radial infall of a small test particle coupled to a scalar
field into a -dimensional Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole. We focus
on and 7, extending the analysis we have done for . For small
black holes, the spectra peaks strongly at a frequency , which
is the lowest pure anti-de Sitter (AdS) mode. The waveform vanishes
exponentially as , and this exponential decay is governed
entirely by the lowest quasinormal frequency. This collision process is
interesting from the point of view of the dynamics itself in relation to the
possibility of manufacturing black holes at LHC within the brane world
scenario, and from the point of view of the AdS/CFT conjecture, since the
scalar field can represent the string theory dilaton, and 4, 5, 7 are

The Bismut-Elworthy-Li type formulae for stochastic differential equations with jumps

process are studied, and the Bismut-Elworthy-Li type formulae can be obtained
under the uniformly elliptic condition on the coefficients of the diffusion and
