On the non-existence of a projective (75, 4,12, 5) set in PG(3, 7)
We show by a combination of theoretical argument and computer search that if a projective (75, 4, 12, 5) set in PG(3, 7) exists then its automorphism group must be trivial. This corresponds to the smallest open case of a coding problem posed by H. Ward in 1998, concerning the possible existence of an infinite family of projective two-weight codes meeting the Griesmer bound
Results of the MRI substudy of the intravenous magnesium efficacy in stroke trial

Background and Purpose:Although magnesium is neuroprotective in animal stroke models, no clinical benefit was confirmed in the Intravenous Magnesium Efficacy in Stroke (IMAGES) trial of acute stroke patients. The Magnetic
Resonance in IMAGES (MR IMAGES) substudy investigated the effects of magnesium on the imaging surrogate
outcome of infarct growth.

Methods: IMAGES trial patients in participating centers were randomized to receive either intravenous magnesium or placebo within 12 hours of stroke onset. Infarct growth was defined as volume difference between baseline diffusion-weighted imaging and day 90 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery image lesions. Patients who died were imputed the largest infarct growth observed.

Results: Among the 90 patients included in the primary analysis, there was no difference in infarct growth (median absolute growth, P=0.639; median percentage growth, P=0.616; proportion with any growth, P=0.212) between the
46 treated with magnesium and 44 with placebo. Infarct growth correlated with NIHSS score change from baseline to
day 90. There was a trend showing baseline serum glucose correlated with infarct growth with magnesium treatment,
but not in the placebo group. The mismatch frequency was reduced from 73% to 47% by increasing the mismatch
threshold from >20% to >100% of core volume.

Conclusions: Infarct growth, confirmed here as a surrogate for clinical progression, was similar between magnesium and placebo treatment, paralleling the main IMAGES trial clinical outcomes. Glucose was a covariate for infarct growth with magnesium treatment. A more stringent mismatch threshold to define penumbra more appropriately would have
excluded half of the patients in this 12-hour time window stroke study.

The Evolution and Long-Term Results of Laparoscopic Antireflux Surgery for the Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
When carefully performed, laparoscopic antireflux surgery is an effective, durable procedure for the control of gastroesophageal reflux disease
A Modular Peel Fixture for Tape Peel Tests on Immovable Substrates
Background
Peel tests are frequently used to perform measurements of adhesive strength for pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes. Current lab methodologies for 90° peel tests translate the model substrate orthogonally to the peel direction in order to maintain the peel angle, precluding testing from immovable substrates. Objective
It was our objective to develop a peel fixture capable of testing temporary pavement marking (TPM) tapes and other PSA tapes from immovable substrates such as roadways surfaces. Methods
We present a modular peel fixture for conducting peel experiments directly on immovable substrates. The fixture was validated through a series of peel tests on consumer tapes to reproduce the linear width dependence and viscoelastic rate dependence found in traditional peeling setups. To test the capabilities of the fixture, a series of peel tests were conducted with various tapes on controlled surfaces, and a commercial tape on various immovable substrates. Results
We demonstrate the ability of our fixture to reproduce results reported for traditional peel tests from literature. In addition, we were able to conduct peel tests directly on immovable substrates such as the benchtop. Conclusions
This fixture shows potential for both traditional peeling tests, and for use in in-situ peel experiments from substrates relevant to the end application of the PSA tape
Brane World Cosmologies and Statistical Properties of Gravitational Lenses
Brane world cosmologies seem to provide an alternative explanation for the
present accelerated stage of the Universe with no need to invoke either a
cosmological constant or an exotic \emph{quintessence} component. In this paper
we investigate statistical properties of gravitational lenses for some
particular scenarios based on this large scale modification of gravity. We show
that a large class of such models are compatible with the current lensing data
for values of the matter density parameter
(). If one fixes to be , as suggested by
most of the dynamical estimates of the quantity of matter in the Universe, the
predicted number of lensed quasars requires a slightly open universe with a
crossover distance between the 4 and 5-dimensional gravities of the order of

Decay of quantised vorticity by sound emission
It is thought that in a quantum fluid sound generation is the ultimate sink
of turbulent kinetic energy in the absence of any other dissipation mechanism
near absolute zero. We show that a suitably trapped Bose-Einstein condensate
provides a model system to study the sound emitted by accelerating vortices in
a controlled way.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Superfluid toroidal currents in atomic condensates
The dynamics of toroidal condensates in the presence of condensate flow and
dipole perturbation have been investigated. The Bogoliubov spectrum of
condensate is calculated for an oblate torus using a discrete-variable
representation and a spectral method to high accuracy. The transition from
spheroidal to toroidal geometry of the trap displaces the energy levels into
narrow bands. The lowest-order acoustic modes are quantized with the dispersion
relation with . A condensate
with toroidal current splits the co-rotating and
counter-rotating pair by the amount: . Radial dipole excitations are the lowest energy dissipation modes.
For highly occupied condensates the nonlinearity creates an asymmetric mix of
dipole circulation and nonlinear shifts in the spectrum of excitations so that
the center of mass circulates around the axis of symmetry of the trap. We
outline an experimental method to study these excitations.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Expansion of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an atomic waveguide
The expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic waveguide is
analyzed. We study different regimes of expansion, and identify a transient
regime between one-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamics, in which the
properties of the condensate and its further expansion can be well explained by
reducing the transversal dynamics to a two-level system. The relevance of this
regime in current experiments is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
