Recent morphodynamic evolution of the largest uninhibited island in the Yangtze (Changjiang) estuary during 1998-2014: Influence of the anthropogenic interference
Estuarine geomorphology worldwide has greatly changed in the Anthropocene due to intensive human inferences in river basin and within estuary, which has received increasing global concerns. Here, recent morphodynamic evolution of Jiuduan Shoal (JDS), the largest uninhabited island in the Yangtze (Changjiang) Estuary, and associated controlling factors were analyzed based on unique high-resolution seasonal-surveyed bathymetric data during 1998–2014. It can be indicated that JDS presents novel 12 and 48 months fluctuations though significant accretion was detected on high flats above −2 m. Meanwhile, morphodynamic evolution of JDS during 1998–2014 was divided into three stages: significant siltation on land-ward half of north JDS and expanding of Jiangya Shoal (JYS, part of JDS) tail, but less accretion at high flats from 1998 to 2002; continuous variations of JYS and reshape of seaward JDS with erosion band and heave appearance from 2002 to 2006; retentive alteration of JYS but recovery of erosion band and heave, together with redistribution of sand between high and low flats on seaward JDS after 2007. Moreover, river discharge could be likely the key factor controlling periodic characteristics of recent JDS evolution. Deep waterway project (DWP) dominates area increase of JDS by inducing accretion in north edge and south edge of Lower Shoal between 1998 and 2014
Gluon-gluon fusion contribution to the productions of three gauge bosons at the LHC
Productions of multiple gauge bosons at the LHC are sensitive to triple or
quartic gauge couplings and thus provide a sensitive test for the electroweak
sector of the Standard Model and allow for a probe of new physics. In this work
we calculate the gluon-gluon initiate state contribution to the productions of
three gauge bosons (, and ) at the LHC,
which is formally part of NNLO effects compared to the LO quark-antiquark
channels corrections. For each process we present the ratio between the
gluon-gluon channels contribution and the quark-antiquark channels
contribution. We found that such a ratio for () is of
the order of (), much smaller than the corresponding ratio
for the diboson production due to the decrease of gluon PDF when more particles
appear in the final states. These small ratios imply that gluon-gluon fusion
contribution is phenomenological negligible for the productions of
and . However, for production, the
ratio is about 5\%, which is of the same order of magnitude as the ratio for
production due to the big cancellation between the amplitudes of
quark-antiquark channels. While such an effect can be neglected currently at
the LHC, it may be accessible at the HL-LHC.Comment: 1+13 pages, 8 figures, 4 table
Detection of Linkage Between Solar and Lunar Cycles and Runoff of the World\u27s Large Rivers
It is an ongoing concern that global hydrological cycle can be likely intensified under context of climate change and anthropogenic actions. Here, our results show that the solar and lunar periodic motions (SLPMs) have substantial impact on the runoff of the world\u27s large rivers. We estimate that SLPMs can produce a change of the world\u27s large rivers runoff by as much as 6.7%. Although climate models suggest that the increased frequency of extreme events is attributed to anthropogenic activities, it is out of our expectation that as much as 73% and 85% of the extreme flood and drought events (based on runoff discharged to the ocean) appear in resonance with SLPMs, respectively. A reevaluation of impacts of SLPMs on changes in the world\u27s river runoff is urgently needed, especially when extreme drought and flood events are on the rise
Elastic Modulus of Polycrystalline Halide Perovskite Thin Films on Substrates
Using an innovative combination of multi beam-optical sensor (MOSS) curvature
and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, the Young's modulus, E, of
polycrystalline MAPbI3 metal-halide perovskite (MHP) thin films attached to two
different types of substrates (SiO2 and Si) is measured to be in the 6.1-6.2
GPa range. This is significantly lower than that of corresponding MAPbI3
single-crystals, which offers a new avenue of tuning E of MHP thin films via
microstructural tailoring for influencing the mechanical reliability of
perovskite solar cells (PSCs).Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, supplementary information (1 figure, 1 table
Perovskite-polymer composite cross-linker approach for highly-stable and efficient perovskite solar cells.
Manipulation of grain boundaries in polycrystalline perovskite is an essential consideration for both the optoelectronic properties and environmental stability of solar cells as the solution-processing of perovskite films inevitably introduces many defects at grain boundaries. Though small molecule-based additives have proven to be effective defect passivating agents, their high volatility and diffusivity cannot render perovskite films robust enough against harsh environments. Here we suggest design rules for effective molecules by considering their molecular structure. From these, we introduce a strategy to form macromolecular intermediate phases using long chain polymers, which leads to the formation of a polymer-perovskite composite cross-linker. The cross-linker functions to bridge the perovskite grains, minimizing grain-to-grain electrical decoupling and yielding excellent environmental stability against moisture, light, and heat, which has not been attainable with small molecule defect passivating agents. Consequently, all photovoltaic parameters are significantly enhanced in the solar cells and the devices also show excellent stability
Combination Treatment with MEK and AKT Inhibitors Is More Effective than Each Drug Alone in Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer In Vitro and In Vivo
AZD6244 and MK2206 are targeted small-molecule drugs that inhibit MEK and AKT respectively. The efficacy of this combination in lung cancer is unknown. Our previous work showed the importance of activated AKT in mediating resistance of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to AZD6244. Thus we hypothesized that dual inhibition of both downstream MEK and AKT pathways would induce synergistic antitumor activity. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of AZD6244 and MK2206 individually on a large panel of lung cancer cell lines. Then, we treated 28 human lung cancer cell lines with a combination of AZD6244 and MK2206 at clinically applicable drug molar ratios. The AZD6244-MK2206 combination therapy resulted in a synergistic effect on inhibition of lung cancer cell growth compared to the results of single drug treatment alone. MK2206 enhanced AZD6244-induced Bim overexpression and apoptosis in A549 and H157 cells. When we tested the combination of AZD6244 and MK2206 at ratios of 8∶1, 4∶1, 2∶1, and 1∶8, we found that the synergistic effect of the combination therapy was ratio-dependent. At ratios of 8∶1, 4∶1, and 2∶1, the drug combination consistently demonstrated synergy, whereas decreasing the ratio to 1∶8 resulted in a loss of synergy and produced an additive or antagonistic effect in most cell lines. Furthermore, the AZD6244-MK2206 combination therapy showed synergy in the suppression of A549 and H157 xenograft tumor growth and increased mean animal survival time. The AZD6244-MK2206 combination therapy resulted in effective inhibition of both p-ERK and p-AKT expression in tumor tissue. In addition, a significant increase of apoptosis was detected in tumor tissue from mice treated with AZD6244-MK2206 compared with that from the single agent treated mice. Our study suggests that the combination of AZD6244 and MK2206 has a significant synergistic effect on tumor growth in vitro and in vivo and leads to increased survival rates in mice bearing highly aggressive human lung tumors
Seizing the window of opportunity to mitigate the impact of climate change on the health of Chinese residents
The health threats posed by climate change in China are increasing rapidly. Each province faces different health risks. Without a timely and adequate response, climate change will impact lives and livelihoods at an accelerated rate and even prevent the achievement of the Healthy and Beautiful China initiatives. The 2021 China Report of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change is the first annual update of China’s Report of the Lancet Countdown. It comprehensively assesses the impact of climate change on the health of Chinese households and the measures China has taken. Invited by the Lancet committee, Tsinghua University led the writing of the report and cooperated with 25 relevant institutions in and outside of China. The report includes 25 indicators within five major areas (climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerability; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; economics and finance; and public and political engagement) and a policy brief. This 2021 China policy brief contains the most urgent and relevant indicators focusing on provincial data: The increasing health risks of climate change in China; mixed progress in responding to climate change. In 2020, the heatwave exposures per person in China increased by 4.51 d compared with the 1986–2005 average, resulting in an estimated 92% increase in heatwave-related deaths. The resulting economic cost of the estimated 14500 heatwave-related deaths in 2020 is US$176 million. Increased temperatures also caused a potential 31.5 billion h in lost work time in 2020, which is equivalent to 1.3% of the work hours of the total national workforce, with resulting economic losses estimated at 1.4% of China’s annual gross domestic product. For adaptation efforts, there has been steady progress in local adaptation planning and assessment in 2020, urban green space growth in 2020, and health emergency management in 2019. 12 of 30 provinces reported that they have completed, or were developing, provincial health adaptation plans. Urban green space, which is an important heat adaptation measure, has increased in 18 of 31 provinces in the past decade, and the capacity of China’s health emergency management increased in almost all provinces from 2018 to 2019. As a result of China’s persistent efforts to clean its energy structure and control air pollution, the premature deaths due to exposure to ambient particulate matter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) and the resulting costs continue to decline. However, 98% of China’s cities still have annual average PM2.5 concentrations that are more than the WHO guideline standard of 10 μg/m3. It provides policymakers and the public with up-to-date information on China’s response to climate change and improvements in health outcomes and makes the following policy recommendations. (1) Promote systematic thinking in the related departments and strengthen multi-departmental cooperation. Sectors related to climate and development in China should incorporate health perspectives into their policymaking and actions, demonstrating WHO’s and President Xi Jinping’s so-called health-in-all-policies principle. (2) Include clear goals and timelines for climate-related health impact assessments and health adaptation plans at both the national and the regional levels in the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for 2035. (3) Strengthen China’s climate mitigation actions and ensure that health is included in China’s pathway to carbon neutrality. By promoting investments in zero-carbon technologies and reducing fossil fuel subsidies, the current rebounding trend in carbon emissions will be reversed and lead to a healthy, low-carbon future. (4) Increase awareness of the linkages between climate change and health at all levels. Health professionals, the academic community, and traditional and new media should raise the awareness of the public and policymakers on the important linkages between climate change and health.</p

CFD modeling using heterogeneous reaction kinetics for catalytic dehydrogenation syngas reactions in a fixed-bed reactor
National Natural Science Foundation of China [21076171]; National Ministry of Science and Technology of China [2012CB21500402]; State-Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering of Tsinghua University [SKL-ChE-10A03]A comprehensive 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to simulate the flow behavior and catalytic dehydrogenation reaction of syngas in a heterogenous fixed-bed reactor (FBR). The model combined the porous medium CFD model with a reaction kinetics model. To acquire an accurate reaction kinetics model, a comprehensive reaction mechanism was studied for the heterogeneous catalytic dehydrogenation reaction of syngas over a supported metal catalyst. Based on the reaction mechanism and a statistical test, a reliable kinetics model was proposed. The CFD model combined with the above kinetics model was validated with one set of experimental data. The CFD model was also used to predict key reaction variable distributions such as the temperature and the component concentrations in the reactor.
