    Are green walls a suitable environmental compensation in densifying cities? Quantifying the urban microclimate effects at the pedestrian level in Sao Paulo

    In the city of Sao Paulo, green spaces are few and uneven. Between 2015-2018, to increase greenery, the municipality promoted green walls as an environmental compensation solution for the loss of urban trees. This study aimed to quantify the impact of these green façades on urban microclimate at the pedestrian level, considering the following variables: air temperature, air humidity, and mean radiant temperature. We reviewed local planning documents and the microclimatic performance of green wall technologies, establishing the effects of wall greening based on simulations — using the ENVI-met V4 Science model. Although the main difference was measured 15 cm far from the walls’ surface, the 60 cm away differences from the green wall were insignificant. The results indicate: (a) the impact of the green walls on outdoor microclimates at the pedestrian level is minimum, and (b) Sao Paulo’s policy for environmental compensation using green walls was poorly supported by scientific evidence. Therefore, green walls are a highly questionable alternative for environmental compensation from the perspective of urban microclimate. As much as promoting green walls for potential benefits is desirable, they are unsuitable to compensate the range of ecosystem services lost by the elimination of trees

    Magnetized electron-positron plasmas

    Electrostatic oscillations in cold electron-positron plasmas can be coupled to a propagating electromagnetic mode if the background magnetic field is inhomogeneous. Previous work considered this coupling in the quasi-linear regime, successfully simulating the electromagnetic mode. Here we present a stability analysis of the non-linear problem, perturbed from dynamical equilibrium, in order to gain some insight into the modes present in the system.Comment: Proceedings of the 363.     Towards Structure-Property-Function Relationships for Eumelanin

    We discuss recent progress towards the establishment of important structure-property-function relationships in eumelanins - key functional bio-macromolecular systems responsible for photo-protection and immune response in humans, and implicated in the development of melanoma skin cancer. We focus on the link between eumelanin's secondary structure and optical properties such as broad band UV-visible absorption and strong non-radiative relaxation; both key features of the photo-protective function. We emphasise the insights gained through a holistic approach combining optical spectroscopy with first principles quantum chemical calculations, and advance the hypothesis that the robust functionality characteristic of eumelanin is related to extreme chemical and structural disorder at the secondary level. This inherent disorder is a low cost natural resource, and it is interesting to speculate as to whether it may play a role in other functional bio-macromolecular systems.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, Invited highlight article for Soft Matte

    Effects of Star Formation Stochasticity on the Ly-alpha & Lyman Continuum Emission from Dwarf Galaxies during Reionization

    Observations of distant galaxies play a key role in improving our understanding of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The observed Ly-alpha emission line strength - quantified by its restframe equivalent width (EW) - provides a valuable diagnostic of stellar populations and dust in galaxies during and after the EoR. In this paper we quantify the effects of star formation stochasticity on the predicted Ly-alpha EW in dwarf galaxies, using the publicly available code SLUG ('Stochastically Light Up Galaxies'). We compute the number of hydrogen ionizing photons, as well as flux in the Far UV for a set of models with star formation rates (SFR) in the range 10-3-1 Msol/yr. From these fluxes we compute the luminosity, L-alpha, and the EW of the Ly-alpha line. We find that stochasticity alone induces a broad distribution in L-alpha and EW at a fixed SFR, and that the widths of these distributions decrease with increasing SFR. We parameterize the EW probability density function (PDF) as an SFR-dependent double power law. We find that it is possible to have EW as low as ~EW0/4 and as high as ~3 times the EW0, where EW0 denotes the expected EW in the absence of stochasticity. We argue that stochasticity may therefore be important when linking drop-out and narrow-band selected galaxies, when identifying population III galaxies, and that it may help to explain the large EW (EW > 100 - 200 A) observed for a fraction of Ly-alpha- selected galaxies. Finally, we show that stochasticity can also affect the inferred escape fraction of ionizing photons from galaxies. In particular, we argue that stochasticity may simultaneously explain the observed anomalous ratios of the Lyman continuum flux density to the (non-ionizing) UV continuum density in so-called Lyman-Bump galaxies at z = 3.1, as well as the absence of such objects among a sample of z = 1.3 drop-out galaxies.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Adhesion formation after intracapsular myomectomy with or without adhesion barrier.

    Objective: To show the prevention of adhesion formation by placing an absorbable adhesion barrier after intracapsular myomectomy. Design: Prospective blinded observational study. Setting: University-affiliated Hospitals. Patient(s): Patients R18 years old with single or multiple uterine fibroids removed by laparoscopic or abdominal intracapsular myomectomy. Intervention(s): A total of 694 women undergoing laparoscopic or abdominal myomectomy were randomized for placement of oxidized regenerated cellulose absorbable adhesion barrier to the uterine incision or for control subjects without barriers. The presence of adhesions was assessed in 546 patients who underwent subsequent surgery. MainOutcomeMeasure(s): Theprimaryandsecondaryoutcomesoftheanalysiswerethepresenceandseverityof adhesions for four groups: laparotomy with barrier, laparotomy without barrier, laparoscopy with barrier, and laparoscopy without barrier. Result(s): Therewasahigherrateofadhesionsinlaparotomywithoutbarrier(28.1%)comparedwithlaparoscopy with no barrier (22.6%), followed by laparotomy with barrier (22%) and laparoscopy with barrier (15.9%). Additionally, the type of adhesions were different, filmy and organized were predominant with an adhesion barrier, and cohesive adhesions were more common without an adhesion barrier. Conclusion(s): Oxidized regenerated cellulose reduces postsurgical adhesions. Cohesive adhesions reduction was noted in laparoscopy

    A molecular line scan in the Hubble Deep Field North

    We present a molecular line scan in the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N) that covers the entire 3mm window (79-115 GHz) using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. Our CO redshift coverage spans z2. We reach a CO detection limit that is deep enough to detect essentially all z>1 CO lines reported in the literature so far. We have developed and applied different line searching algorithms, resulting in the discovery of 17 line candidates. We estimate that the rate of false positive line detections is ~2/17. We identify optical/NIR counterparts from the deep ancillary database of the HDF-N for seven of these candidates and investigate their available SEDs. Two secure CO detections in our scan are identified with star-forming galaxies at z=1.784 and at z=2.047. These galaxies have colors consistent with the `BzK' color selection and they show relatively bright CO emission compared with galaxies of similar dust continuum luminosity. We also detect two spectral lines in the submillimeter galaxy HDF850.1 at z=5.183. We consider an additional 9 line candidates as high quality. Our observations also provide a deep 3mm continuum map (1-sigma noise level = 8.6 μJy/beam). Via a stacking approach, we find that optical/MIR bright galaxies contribute only to <50% of the SFR density at 1<z<3, unless high dust temperatures are invoked. The present study represents a first, fundamental step towards an unbiased census of molecular gas in `normal' galaxies at high-z, a crucial goal of extragalactic astronomy in the ALMA era

    Analysis of a mechanistic Markov model for gene duplicates evolving under subfunctionalization

    Background Gene duplication has been identified as a key process driving functional change in many genomes. Several biological models exist for the evolution of a pair of duplicates after a duplication event, and it is believed that gene duplicates can evolve in different ways, according to one process, or a mix of processes. Subfunctionalization is one such process, under which the two duplicates can be preserved by dividing up the function of the original gene between them. Analysis of genomic data using subfunctionalization and related processes has thus far been relatively coarse-grained, with mathematical treatments usually focusing on the phenomenological features of gene duplicate evolution. Results Here, we develop and analyze a mathematical model using the mechanics of subfunctionalization and the assumption of Poisson rates of mutation. By making use of the results from the literature on the Phase-Type distribution, we are able to derive exact analytical results for the model. The main advantage of the mechanistic model is that it leads to testable predictions of the phenomenological behavior (instead of building this behavior into the model a priori), and allows for the estimation of biologically meaningful parameters. We fit the survival function implied by this model to real genome data (Homo sapiens, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus and Canis familiaris), and compare the fit against commonly used phenomenological survival functions. We estimate the number of regulatory regions, and rates of mutation (relative to silent site mutation) in the coding and regulatory regions. We find that for the four genomes tested the subfunctionalization model predicts that duplicates most-likely have just a few regulatory regions, and the rate of mutation in the coding region is around 5-10 times greater than the rate in the regulatory regions. This is the first model-based estimate of the number of regulatory regions in duplicates. Conclusions Strong agreement between empirical results and the predictions of our model suggest that subfunctionalization provides a consistent explanation for the evolution of many gene duplicates

    SiDCoN: A Tool to Aid Scoring of DNA Copy Number Changes in SNP Chip Data

    The recent application of genome-wide, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarrays to investigate DNA copy number aberrations in cancer has provided unparalleled sensitivity for identifying genomic changes. In some instances the complexity of these changes makes them difficult to interpret, particularly when tumour samples are contaminated with normal (stromal) tissue. Current automated scoring algorithms require considerable manual data checking and correction, especially when assessing uncultured tumour specimens. To address these limitations we have developed a visual tool to aid in the analysis of DNA copy number data. Simulated DNA Copy Number (SiDCoN) is a spreadsheet-based application designed to simulate the appearance of B-allele and logR plots for all known types of tumour DNA copy number changes, in the presence or absence of stromal contamination. The system allows the user to determine the level of stromal contamination, as well as specify up to 3 different DNA copy number aberrations for up to 5000 data points (representing individual SNPs). This allows users great flexibility to assess simple or complex DNA copy number combinations. We demonstrate how this utility can be used to estimate the level of stromal contamination within tumour samples and its application in deciphering the complex heterogeneous copy number changes we have observed in a series of tumours. We believe this tool will prove useful to others working in the area, both as a training tool, and to aid in the interpretation of complex copy number changes
