Ion backflow studies with a triple-GEM stack with increasing hole pitch
Gas Electron Multipliers have undergone a very consistent development since
their invention in 1997. Their production procedures have been tuned in such a
way that nowadays it is possible to produce foils with areas of the order of
the square meter that can operate at a reasonable gain, uniform over large
areas and with a good stability in what concerns electrical discharges. For the
third run of LHC, they will be included in the CMS and ALICE experiments after
significant upgrades of the detectors, confirming that these structures are
suitable for very large experiments. In the special case of Time Projection
Chambers, the ion backflow and the energy resolution are sensitive issues that
must be addressed and the GEM has shown to be able to deal with both of them.
In this work, a stack of three GEMs with different pitches has been studied
as a possible future approach for ion-backflow suppression to be used in TPCs
and other detection concepts. With this approach, an ion backflow of 1 % with
an energy resolution of 12 % at 5.9 keV has been achieved with the detector
operating in an Ar/CO2 (90/10) mixture at a gain of ~ 2000.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
Matter-wave 2D solitons in crossed linear and nonlinear optical lattices
It is demonstrated the existence of multidimensional matter-wave solitons in
a crossed optical lattice (OL) with linear OL in the direction and
nonlinear OL (NOL) in the direction, where the NOL can be generated by a
periodic spatial modulation of the scattering length using an optically induced
Feshbach resonance. In particular, we show that such crossed linear and
nonlinear OL allows to stabilize two-dimensional (2D) solitons against decay or
collapse for both attractive and repulsive interactions. The solutions for the
soliton stability are investigated analytically, by using a multi-Gaussian
variational approach (VA), with the Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) necessary criterion
for stability; and numerically, by using the relaxation method and direct
numerical time integrations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). Very good
agreement of the results corresponding to both treatments is observed.Comment: 8 pages (two-column format), with 16 eps-files of 4 figure

Solitons in atomic condensates, with optical lattices and field-induced dipole moments
We report some investigations on the existence of matter-wave solitons when considering cross-combined optical lattices (OL) in three dimensions (3D), where we have a
nonlinear OL in one of the directions, which is perpendicular to a two-dimensional (2D) plane with linear OLs in either one or both directions. This study can be useful to manage 3D solitons through spatial modulations of the scattering length in one of the OL directions. Another independent study is reported, by considering bright solitons manifested in a bosonic condensate
gas carrying collinear dipole moments, which induces an external polarizing field with strength periodically modulated along one of the coordinates. This leads to an effective nonlocal nonlinear lattice, with solitonic solutions. Their dynamics and mobility can be nvestigated by an effective one-dimensional (1D) model. Interactions between solitons are also reported within this 1D
model. In all the cases, we consider full numerical and variational approaches
a reinvenção do setor.
The industry of tourism has always been on an upraise and for Portugal it represents one of the main
economic activities, as it directly contributes to almost 20% of its GDP as well as over 21% of the
countries’ total jobs. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought deep structural and transformational
impacts to the industry, leaving destination marketing organizations with the difficult task of reinventing
and reforming the industry. The knowledge and analysis of tourism destination images’ is widely
recognized as a crucial tool for the, afore mentioned, reform and reinvention of the activity and, for that
matter, the relaunch of tourism. Through the usage of User Generated Content (UGC), collected from
TripAdvisor, this study aims to reveal the virtual tourism destination image of Lisbon. To analyze
Lisbon’s tourism image, a three-phase method based on three distinct types of tourist interactions with
the destination, was utilized. Thus, the image can be summarized as the collection of all three
designative, appraisive and prescriptive components. This study compiled 165.000 online travel
reviews, written in English, from 2017 to 2019, with the opinion of at least 171 different nationalities.
Results recognize Lisbon with quite a popular and positive image and offer new untapped knowledge to
better manage the region’s tourism. 90% of the reviews register a score of “Excellent” and “Very good”,
with “weak” and “Terrible” reviews being significantly less frequent (6%). The results also show that a
visitor is much more likely to recommend Lisbon than to not recommend it
