Some Practical Applications of Obsidian Hydration Dating in the Subarctic

    Get PDF
Eight case studies of obsidian hydration dating in the Koyukuk River region of northwestern interior Alaska are discussed. Historiographic conclusions include recognition of late and early microblade industries, apparent verification of the hypothesis that northern fluted points date within a Paleo-Indian time frame, and validation of a Tuktu-like first millennium A.D. Northern Archaic phase. However, variance in the data and lack of firm hydration rates render the results less precise than is desired. Methodological conclusions have ramifications that should apply throughout the subarctic region and well beyond. These are: 1) Hydration measurements may be unreliable for dating individual specimens; 2) Lack of closely controlled hydration rates or dependence on 14-C dates with large errors for calibration can be crippling; 3) The average of a series of specimens can be used to date components which were formed during a brief period of occupation, though high variance of the data may be disconcerting; 4) Variance was low in one case for specimens all derived from the same piece of raw material, but for dating it may be necessary to find, through induced hydration or other means, the precise hydration rate applicable to each different piece of raw material (from a single component); and 5) Many variables may be responsible for results which render some sample sets unreliable or unusable, especially those from surface sites. Some of these variables require further technical investigation - loss of the hydration layer and recommencement of hydration after exposure to forest and tundra fires, for instance. Other factors are reasonably well understood by researchers, but it would be desirable to have computer simulations of site contexts in order to assess the magnitude, correlations, and cumulative results of their effects.Key words: archaeology, western Subarctic, Alaska, dating, obsidian, obsidian hydrationMots clés: archéologie, subarctique de l'ouest, Alaska, datation, obsidienne, l'hydratation de obsidienn

High-temperature Hydrogen Chloride Releases from Mixtures of Sodium Chloride with Sulfates: Implications for the Chlorine-Mineralogy as Determined by the Sample Analysis at Mars Instrument on the Curiosity Rover in Gale Crater, Mars

    Get PDF
Hydrogen chloride releases above 500 C occurred in several samples analyzed by the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) evolved gas analyzer on the Curiosity rover in Gale crater. These have been attributed to reactions between chlorides (original or from oxychlorine decomposition) and water. Some of these HCl releases that peaked below the melting temperature of common chlorides did not co-evolve with oxygen or water, and were not explained by laboratory analog work (Figure 1). Therefore, these HCl releases were not caused by MgCl2 or soley due to reactions between water and melting chlorides. The goal of this work was to explain the HCl releases that did not co-evolve with oxygen or water and occurred below the melting point of common chlorides, which have not been explained by previous laboratory analog work. This work specifically evaluates the role of evolved SO2 in the production of HCl

Preceding rule induction with instance reduction methods

    Get PDF
A new prepruning technique for rule induction is presented which applies instance reduction before rule induction. An empirical evaluation records the predictive accuracy and size of rule-sets generated from 24 datasets from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. Three instance reduction algorithms (Edited Nearest Neighbour, AllKnn and DROP5) are compared. Each one is used to reduce the size of the training set, prior to inducing a set of rules using Clark and Boswell's modification of CN2. A hybrid instance reduction algorithm (comprised of AllKnn and DROP5) is also tested. For most of the datasets, pruning the training set using ENN, AllKnn or the hybrid significantly reduces the number of rules generated by CN2, without adversely affecting the predictive performance. The hybrid achieves the highest average predictive accuracy

A Detailed Monte-Carlo Simulation for the Belle TOF System

    Get PDF
We have developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation program for the Belle TOF system. Based on GEANT simulation, it takes account of all physics processes in the TOF scintillation counters and readout electronics. The simulation reproduces very well the performance of the Belle TOF system, including the dE/dx response, the time walk effect, the time resolution, and the hit efficiency due to beam background. In this report, we will describe the Belle TOF simulation program in detail.Comment: To be submitted to NI

The glassy response of solid He-4 to torsional oscillations

We calculated the glassy response of solid He-4 to torsional oscillations assuming a phenomenological glass model. Making only a few assumptions about the distribution of glassy relaxation times in a small subsystem of otherwise rigid solid He-4, we can account for the magnitude of the observed period shift and concomitant dissipation peak in several torsion oscillator experiments. The implications of the glass model for solid He-4 are threefold: (1) The dynamics of solid He-4 is governed by glassy relaxation processes. (2) The distribution of relaxation times varies significantly between different torsion oscillator experiments. (3) The mechanical response of a torsion oscillator does not require a supersolid component to account for the observed anomaly at low temperatures, though we cannot rule out its existence.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, presented at QFS200

An Experimental Investigation of Colonel Blotto Games

"This article examines behavior in the two-player, constant-sum Colonel Blotto game with asymmetric resources in which players maximize the expected number of battlefields won. The experimental results support all major theoretical predictions. In the auction treatment, where winning a battlefield is deterministic, disadvantaged players use a 'guerilla warfare' strategy which stochastically allocates zero resources to a subset of battlefields. Advantaged players employ a 'stochastic complete coverage' strategy, allocating random, but positive, resource levels across the battlefields. In the lottery treatment, where winning a battlefield is probabilistic, both players divide their resources equally across all battlefields." MEF2 is an in vivo immune-metabolic switch

    Get PDF
Infections disturb metabolic homeostasis in many contexts, but the underlying connections are not completely understood. To address this, we use paired genetic and computational screens in Drosophila to identify transcriptional regulators of immunity and pathology and their associated target genes and physiologies. We show that Mef2 is required in the fat body for anabolic function and the immune response. Using genetic and biochemical approaches, we find that MEF2 is phosphorylated at a conserved site in healthy flies and promotes expression of lipogenic and glycogenic enzymes. Upon infection, this phosphorylation is lost, and the activity of MEF2 changes—MEF2 now associates with the TATA binding protein to bind a distinct TATA box sequence and promote antimicrobial peptide expression. The loss of phosphorylated MEF2 contributes to loss of anabolic enzyme expression in Gram-negative bacterial infection. MEF2 is thus a critical transcriptional switch in the adult fat body between metabolism and immunity
