Detection of Atmospheric Cherenkov Radiation Using Solar Heliostat Mirrors
The gamma-ray energy region between 20 and 250 GeV is largely unexplored.
Ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov detectors offer a possible way to explore
this region, but large Cherenkov photon collection areas are needed to achieve
low energy thresholds. This paper discusses the development of a Cherenkov
detector using the heliostat mirrors of a solar power plant as the primary
collector. As part of this development, we built a prototype detector
consisting of four heliostat mirrors and used it to record atmospheric
Cherenkov radiation produced in extensive air showers created by cosmic ray

Perfluorinated alkyl acids in the serum and follicular fluid of UK women with and without polycystic ovarian syndrome undergoing fertility treatment and associations with hormonal and metabolic parameters
© 2018 Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) undergoing treatment for infertility could be a sensitive subpopulation for endocrine effects of exposure to perfluorinated alkyl acids (PFAAs), persistent organic pollutants with potential endocrine activity. Women with, PCOS (n = 30) and age- and BMI-matched controls (n = 29) were recruited from a UK fertility clinic in 2015. Paired serum and follicular fluid samples were collected and analysed for 13 PFAAs. Sex steroid and thyroid hormones, and metabolic markers were measured and assessed for associations with serum PFAAs. Four PFAAs were detected in all serum and follicular fluid samples and concentrations in the two matrices were highly correlated (R2 > 0.95): perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA). Serum PFOS was positively associated with age (1 ng/mL per yr, p < 0.05) and was higher in PCOS cases than controls (geometric mean [GM] 3.9 vs. 3.1 ng/mL, p < 0.05) and in women with irregular vs. regular menstrual cycles (GM 3.9 vs. 3.0 ng/mL, p = 0.01). After adjustment for confounders, serum testosterone was significantly associated with PFOA, PFHxS, PFNA, and the molar sum of the four frequently detected serum PFAAs (approximately 50 percent increase per ln-unit) among controls but not PCOS cases. HbA1c in PCOS cases was inversely associated with serum PFOA, PFHxs, and sum of PFAAs (2–3 mmol/mol per ln-unit). In controls, fasting glucose was positively associated with serum PFOA and sum of PFAAs (0.25 nmol/L per ln-unit increase in PFAAs). Few other associations were observed. The analyses and findings here should be considered exploratory in light of the relatively small sample sizes and large number of statistical comparisons conducted. However, the data do not suggest increased sensitivity to potential endocrine effects of PFAAs in PCOS patients
MC64: A web platform to test bioinformatics algorithms in a many-core architecture
New analytical methodologies, like the so-called "next-generation sequencing" (NGS), allow the sequencing of full genomes with high speed and reduced price. Yet, such technologies generate huge amounts of data that demand large raw computational power. Many-core technologies can be exploited to overcome the involved bioinformatics bottleneck. Indeed, such hardware is currently in active development. We have developed parallel bioinformatics algorithms for many-core microprocessors containing 64 cores each. Thus, the MC64 web platform allows executing high-performance alignments (Needleman-Wunsch, Smith-Waterman and ClustalW) of long sequences. The MC64 platform can be accessed via web browsers, allowing easy resource integration into third-party tools. Furthermore, the results obtained from the MC64 include time-performance statistics that can be compared with other platform
The Upper Limit of Magnetic Field Strength in Dense Stellar Hadronic Matter
It is shown that in strongly magnetized neutron stars, there exist upper
limits of magnetic field strength, beyond which the self energies for both
neutron and proton components of neutron star matter become complex in nature.
As a consequence they decay within the strong interaction time scale. However,
in the ultra-strong magnetic field case, when the zeroth Landau level is only

Risk factors for delayed gastric emptying following laparoscopic repair of very large hiatus hernias
Background: Delayed gastric emptying can complicate surgery for hiatus hernia. The aim of this study was to quantify its incidence following laparoscopic repair of very large hiatus hernias, identify key risk factors for its occurrence and determine its impact on clinical outcomes. Methods: Data collected from a randomized trial of patients who underwent laparoscopic mesh versus sutured repair of very large hiatus hernias (more than 50 per cent of stomach in chest) were analysed retrospectively. Delayed gastric emptying was defined as endoscopic evidence of solid food in the stomach after fasting for 6 h at 6 months after surgery. Results: Delayed gastric emptying occurred in 19 of 102 patients (18·6 per cent). In univariable analysis, type 2 paraoesophageal hernia (relative risk (RR) 3·15, 95 per cent c.i. 1·41 to 7·06), concurrent anterior and posterior hiatal repair (RR 2·66, 1·14 to 6·18), hernia sac excision (RR 4·85, 1·65 to 14·24), 270°/360° fundoplication (RR 3·64, 1·72 to 7·68), division of short gastric vessels (RR 6·82, 2·12 to 21·90) and revisional surgery (RR 3·69, 1·73 to 7·87) correlated with delayed gastric emptying. In multivariable analysis, division of short gastric vessels (RR 6·27, 1·85 to 21·26) and revisional surgery (RR 6·19, 1·32 to 28·96) were independently associated with delayed gastric emptying. Delayed gastric emptying correlated with adverse gastrointestinal symptomatology, including higher rates of bloating, nausea, vomiting and anorexia, as well as reduced patient satisfaction with the operation and recovery. Conclusion: Delayed gastric emptying following large hiatus hernia repair is common and associated with adverse symptoms and reduced patient satisfaction. Superconducting fluctuations and the Nernst effect: A diagrammatic approach
We calculate the contribution of superconducting fluctuations above the
critical temperature to the transverse thermoelectric response
, the quantity central to the analysis of the Nernst effect. The
calculation is carried out within the microscopic picture of BCS, and to linear
order in magnetic field. We find that as , the dominant contribution
to arises from the Aslamazov-Larkin diagrams, and is equal to the
result previously obtained from a stochastic time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau
equation [Ussishkin, Sondhi, and Huse, arXiv:cond-mat/0204484]. We present an
argument which establishes this correspondence for the heat current. Other
microscopic contributions, which generalize the Maki-Thompson and density of

Reconstructing the 3-D Trajectories of CMEs in the Inner Heliosphere
A method for the full three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of the
trajectories of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) using Solar TErrestrial RElations
Observatory (STEREO) data is presented. Four CMEs that were simultaneously
observed by the inner and outer coronagraphs (COR1 and 2) of the Ahead and
Behind STEREO satellites were analysed. These observations were used to derive
CME trajectories in 3-D out to ~15Rsun. The reconstructions using COR1/2 data
support a radial propagation model. Assuming pseudo-radial propagation at large
distances from the Sun (15-240Rsun), the CME positions were extrapolated into
the Heliospheric Imager (HI) field-of-view. We estimated the CME velocities in
the different fields-of-view. It was found that CMEs slower than the solar wind
were accelerated, while CMEs faster than the solar wind were decelerated, with

interferometry in star formation research. The topics covered are molecular
outflows, accretion disks, fragmentation and chemical properties of low- and
