    Polyamide profiles of porcine milk and of intestinal tissue of pigs during suckling.

    Previous studies have suggested that luminal polyamines can directly influence intestinal differentiation of neonatal rats. The present investigation has demonstrated the presence of high levels of polyamines in porcine milk and in the intestinal tissues of suckling pigs. The quantities of polyamines in sow's milk sampled between weeks 1 and 8 of lactation were determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The concentration of milk spermidine (SPD) remained constant over the first three to four weeks of lactation but increased four-fold between weeks 4 and 7. Neither putrescine nor spermine (SPN) were detected in any of the milk samples. During intestinal development the mucosal SPD/SPN ratio was elevated between weeks 1 and 3, and weeks 5 and 7. The latter period of increase corresponded with the surge in milk SPD concentration. It is suggested that milk SPD is taken up from the intestinal lumen and is involved in potentiating intestinal differentiation during the latter part of the suckling period

    Quasiparticle dispersion of the t-J and Hubbard models

    The spectral weight A(p,ω){\rm A({\bf p},\omega)} of the two dimensional t−J{\rm t-J} and Hubbard models has been calculated using exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, at several densities 1.0≤⟨n⟩≤0.5{\rm 1.0 \leq \langle n \rangle \leq 0.5}. The photoemission (ω<0)(\omega < 0) region contains two dominant distinct features, namely a low-energy quasiparticle peak with bandwidth of order J, and a broad valence band peak at energies of order t. This behavior persistspersists away from half-filling, as long as the antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations are robust. The results give support to theories of the copper oxide materials based on the behavior of holes in antiferromagnets, and it also provides theoretical guidance for the interpretation of experimental photoemission data for the cuprates.Comment: (minor changes) RevTeX, 4 figures available on reques

    A Model of Fermion Masses and Flavor Mixings with Family Symmetry SU(3)⊗U(1)SU(3)\otimes U(1)

    The family symmetry SU(3)⊗U(1)SU(3)\otimes U(1) is proposed to solve flavor problems about fermion masses and flavor mixings. It's breaking is implemented by some flavon fields at the high-energy scale. In addition a discrete group Z2Z_{2} is introduced to generate tiny neutrino masses, which is broken by a real singlet scalar field at the middle-energy scale. The low-energy effective theory is elegantly obtained after all of super-heavy fermions are integrated out and decoupling. All the fermion mass matrices are regularly characterized by four fundamental matrices and thirteen parameters. The model can perfectly fit and account for all the current experimental data about the fermion masses and flavor mixings, in particular, it finely predicts the first generation quark masses and the values of θ13 l\theta^{\,l}_{13} and JCP lJ_{CP}^{\,l} in neutrino physics.     The fermi arc and fermi pocket in cuprates in a short-range diagonal stripe phase

    In this paper we studied the fermi arc and the fermi pocket in cuprates in a short-range diagonal stripe phase with wave vectors (7Ï€/8,7Ï€/8)(7\pi/8, 7\pi/8), which reproduce with a high accuracy the positions and sizes of the fermi arc and fermi pocket and the superstructure in cuprates observed by Meng et al\cite{Meng}. The low-energy spectral function indicates that the fermi pocket results from the main band and the shadow band at the fermi energy. Above the fermi energy the shadow band gradually departs away from the main band, leaving a fermi arc. Thus we conclude that the fermi arc and fermi pocket can be fully attributed to the stripe phase but has nothing to do with pairing. Incorporating a d-wave pairing potential in the stripe phase the spectral weight in the antinodal region is removed, leaving a clean fermi pocket in the nodal region.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    In 2001, the World Health Assembly (WHA) passed the landmark WHA 54.19 resolution for global scale-up of mass administration of anthelmintic drugs for morbidity control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis, which affect more than 1·5 billion of the world's poorest people. Since then, more than a decade of research and experience has yielded crucial knowledge on the control and elimination of these helminthiases. However, the global strategy has remained largely unchanged since the original 2001 WHA resolution and associated WHO guidelines on preventive chemotherapy. In this Personal View, we highlight recent advances that, taken together, support a call to revise the global strategy and guidelines for preventive chemotherapy and complementary interventions against schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis. These advances include the development of guidance that is specific to goals of morbidity control and elimination of transmission. We quantify the result of forgoing this opportunity by computing the yearly disease burden, mortality, and lost economic productivity associated with maintaining the status quo. Without change, we estimate that the population of sub-Saharan Africa will probably lose 2·3 million disability-adjusted life-years and US$3·5 billion of economic productivity every year, which is comparable to recent acute epidemics, including the 2014 Ebola and 2015 Zika epidemics. We propose that the time is now to strengthen the global strategy to address the substantial disease burden of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis

    APC/C-mediated multiple monoubiquitylation provides an alternative degradation signal for cyclin B1

    The anaphase-promoting complex or cyclosome (APC/C) initiates mitotic exit by ubiquitylating cell-cycle regulators such as cyclin B1 and securin. Lys 48-linked ubiquitin chains represent the canonical signal targeting proteins for degradation by the proteasome, but they are not required for the degradation of cyclin B1. Lys 11-linked ubiquitin chains have been implicated in degradation of APC/C substrates, but the Lys 11-chain-forming E2 UBE2S is not essential for mitotic exit, raising questions about the nature of the ubiquitin signal that targets APC/C substrates for degradation. Here we demonstrate that multiple monoubiquitylation of cyclin B1, catalysed by UBCH10 or UBC4/5, is sufficient to target cyclin B1 for destruction by the proteasome. When the number of ubiquitylatable lysines in cyclin B1 is restricted, Lys 11-linked ubiquitin polymers elaborated by UBE2S become increasingly important. We therefore explain how a substrate that contains multiple ubiquitin acceptor sites confers flexibility in the requirement for particular E2 enzymes in modulating the rate of ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis

    The recent search for non qqˉq \bar{q} mesons in π−p\pi^{-}p interactions at Brookhaven National Laboratory is summarized.     Superconductivity in the two dimensional Hubbard Model.

    Quasiparticle bands of the two-dimensional Hubbard model are calculated using the Roth two-pole approximation to the one particle Green's function. Excellent agreement is obtained with recent Monte Carlo calculations, including an anomalous volume of the Fermi surface near half-filling, which can possibly be explained in terms of a breakdown of Fermi liquid theory. The calculated bands are very flat around the (pi,0) points of the Brillouin zone in agreement with photoemission measurements of cuprate superconductors. With doping there is a shift in spectral weight from the upper band to the lower band. The Roth method is extended to deal with superconductivity within a four-pole approximation allowing electron-hole mixing. It is shown that triplet p-wave pairing never occurs. Singlet d_{x^2-y^2}-wave pairing is strongly favoured and optimal doping occurs when the van Hove singularity, corresponding to the flat band part, lies at the Fermi level. Nearest neighbour antiferromagnetic correlations play an important role in flattening the bands near the Fermi level and in favouring superconductivity. However the mechanism for superconductivity is a local one, in contrast to spin fluctuation exchange models. For reasonable values of the hopping parameter the transition temperature T_c is in the range 10-100K. The optimum doping delta_c lies between 0.14 and 0.25, depending on the ratio U/t. The gap equation has a BCS-like form and (2*Delta_{max})/(kT_c) ~ 4.Comment: REVTeX, 35 pages, including 19 PostScript figures numbered 1a to 11. Uses epsf.sty (included).     Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System

    The exclusive reaction π−p→ηπ0n\pi^- p \to \eta \pi^0 n, η→π+π−π0\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0 at 18 GeV/c/c has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample of 23~492 ηπ0n\eta \pi^0 n events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the P+P_+ wave, thus providing evidence for a neutral exotic meson with JPC=1−+J^{PC} = 1^{-+}, a mass of 1257±20±251257 \pm 20 \pm 25 MeV/c2/c^2, and a width of 354±64±60354 \pm 64 \pm 60 MeV/c2/c^2. New interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral ηπ0\eta \pi^0 system observed in E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.Comment: p3, rewording the paragraph (at the bottom) about the phase variations. p4, rewording paragrath "The second method ..." . p4, at the bottom of paragrath "The third method ..." added consistent with the results of methods 1 and 2
