Influence of a low magnetic field on the thermal diffusivity of Bi-2212
The thermal diffusivity of a Bi-2212 polycrystalline sample has been measured
under a 1T magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the heat flux. The
magnetic contribution to the heat carrier mean free path has been extracted and
is found to behave as a simple power law. This behavior can be attributed to a
percolation process of electrons in the vortex lattice created by the magnetic
field.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev.
Bosonic Excitations in Random Media
We consider classical normal modes and non-interacting bosonic excitations in
disordered systems. We emphasise generic aspects of such problems and parallels
with disordered, non-interacting systems of fermions, and discuss in particular
the relevance for bosonic excitations of symmetry classes known in the
fermionic context. We also stress important differences between bosonic and
fermionic problems. One of these follows from the fact that ground state
stability of a system requires all bosonic excitation energy levels to be
positive, while stability in systems of non-interacting fermions is ensured by
the exclusion principle, whatever the single-particle energies. As a
consequence, simple models of uncorrelated disorder are less useful for bosonic
systems than for fermionic ones, and it is generally important to study the
excitation spectrum in conjunction with the problem of constructing a
disorder-dependent ground state: we show how a mapping to an operator with
chiral symmetry provides a useful tool for doing this. A second difference
involves the distinction for bosonic systems between excitations which are
Goldstone modes and those which are not. In the case of Goldstone modes we
review established results illustrating the fact that disorder decouples from
excitations in the low frequency limit, above a critical dimension , which
in different circumstances takes the values and . For bosonic
excitations which are not Goldstone modes, we argue that an excitation density
varying with frequency as is a universal
feature in systems with ground states that depend on the disorder realisation.
We illustrate our conclusions with extensive analytical and some numerical
calculations for a variety of models in one dimension
Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetries in Forward-Angle Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering
We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering
of transversely-polarized 3 GeV electrons from unpolarized protons at Q^2 =
0.15, 0.25 (GeV/c)^2. The results are inconsistent with calculations solely
using the elastic nucleon intermediate state, and generally agree with
calculations with significant inelastic hadronic intermediate state
contributions. A_n provides a direct probe of the imaginary component of the
2-gamma exchange amplitude, the complete description of which is important in
the interpretation of data from precision electron-scattering experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters; shortened

Strange Quark Contributions to Parity-Violating Asymmetries in the Forward G0 Electron-Proton Scattering Experiment
We have measured parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton
scattering over the range of momentum transfers 0.12 < Q^2 < 1.0 GeV^2. These
asymmetries, arising from interference of the electromagnetic and neutral weak
interactions, are sensitive to strange quark contributions to the currents of
the proton. The measurements were made at JLab using a toroidal spectrometer to
detect the recoiling protons from a liquid hydrogen target. The results
indicate non-zero, Q^2 dependent, strange quark contributions and provide new
information beyond that obtained in previous experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Abundances of the elements in the solar system
A review of the abundances and condensation temperatures of the elements and
their nuclides in the solar nebula and in chondritic meteorites. Abundances of
the elements in some neighboring stars are also discussed.Comment: 42 pages, 11 tables, 8 figures, chapter, In Landolt- B\"ornstein, New

The G0 Experiment: Apparatus for Parity-Violating Electron Scattering Measurements at Forward and Backward Angles
In the G0 experiment, performed at Jefferson Lab, the parity-violating
elastic scattering of electrons from protons and quasi-elastic scattering from
deuterons is measured in order to determine the neutral weak currents of the
nucleon. Asymmetries as small as 1 part per million in the scattering of a
polarized electron beam are determined using a dedicated apparatus. It consists
of specialized beam-monitoring and control systems, a cryogenic hydrogen (or
deuterium) target, and a superconducting, toroidal magnetic spectrometer
equipped with plastic scintillation and aerogel Cerenkov detectors, as well as
fast readout electronics for the measurement of individual events. The overall
design and performance of this experimental system is discussed.Comment: Submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Method
A microscopic approach to the response of He -He mixtures
Correlated Basis Function perturbation theory is used to evaluate the zero
temperature response of He-He mixtures for inelastic
neutron scattering, at momentum transfers ranging from to . We adopt a Jastrow correlated ground state and a basis of correlated
particle-hole and phonon states. We insert correlated one particle-one hole and
one-phonon states to compute the second order response. The decay of the
one-phonon states into two-phonon states is accounted for in boson-boson
approximation. The full response is splitted into three partial components
, each of them showing a particle-hole bump and a
one phonon, delta shaped peak, which stays separated from the multiphonon
background. The cross term results to be of comparable
importance to in the particle-hole sector and to
in the phonon one. Once the one-phonon peak has been
convoluted with the experimental broadening, the computed scattering function
is in semiquantitative agreement with recent experimental measurements.Comment: 26 pages, RevTex 3.0, 8 figures available upon reques
Measurement of longitudinal and transverse cross sections in the 3He(e,eâČÏ+)3H reaction at W=1.6âGeV
The coherent 3He(e,eâČÏ+)3H reaction was measured at Q2=0.4â(GeV/c)2 and W=1.6âGeV for two values of the virtual photon polarization, Δ, allowing the separation of longitudinal and transverse cross sections. The results from the coherent process on 3He were compared to H(e,eâČÏ+)n data taken at the same kinematics. This marks the first direct comparison of these processes. At these kinematics (pÏ=1.1âGeV/c), pion rescattering from the spectator nucleons in the 3He(e,eâČÏ+)3H process is expected to be small, simplifying the comparison to Ï+ production from the free proton
