Anisotropic two-dimensional Heisenberg model by Schwinger-boson Gutzwiller projected method
Two-dimensional Heisenberg model with anisotropic couplings in the and
directions () is considered. The model is first solved in the
Schwinger-boson mean-field approximation. Then the solution is Gutzwiller
projected to satisfy the local constraint that there is only one boson at each
site. The energy and spin-spin correlation of the obtained wavefunction are
calculated for systems with up to sites by means of the
variational Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that the antiferromagnetic
long-range order remains down to the one-dimensional limit.Comment: 15 pages RevTex3.0, 4 figures, available upon request, GWRVB8-9
A Honeycomb Proportional Counter for Photon Multiplicity Measurement in the ALICE Experiment
A honeycomb detector consisting of a matrix of 96 closely packed hexagonal
cells, each working as a proportional counter with a wire readout, was
fabricated and tested at the CERN PS. The cell depth and the radial dimensions
of the cell were small, in the range of 5-10 mm. The appropriate cell design
was arrived at using GARFIELD simulations. Two geometries are described
illustrating the effect of field shaping. The charged particle detection
efficiency and the preshower characteristics have been studied using pion and
electron beams. Average charged particle detection efficiency was found to be
98%, which is almost uniform within the cell volume and also within the array.
The preshower data show that the transverse size of the shower is in close
agreement with the results of simulations for a range of energies and converter
thicknesses.Comment: To be published in NIM
Nonabelian gauge field and dual description of fuzzy sphere
In matrix models, higher dimensional D-branes are obtained by imposing a
noncommutative relation to coordinates of lower dimensional D-branes. On the
other hand, a dual description of this noncommutative space is provided by
higher dimensional D-branes with gauge fields. Fuzzy spheres can appear as a
configuration of lower dimensional D-branes in a constant R-R field strength
background. In this paper, we consider a dual description of higher dimensional
fuzzy spheres by introducing nonabelian gauge fields on higher dimensional
spherical D-branes. By using the Born-Infeld action, we show that a fuzzy
-sphere and spherical D-branes with a nonabelian gauge field whose
Chern character is nontrivial are the same objects when is large. We
discuss a relationship between the noncommutative geometry and nonabelian gauge
fields. Nonabelian gauge fields are represented by noncommutative matrices
including the coordinate dependence. A similarity to the quantum Hall system is
also studied.Comment: 28 page
The STAR Photon Multiplicity Detector
Details concerning the design, fabrication and performance of STAR Photon
Multiplicity Detector (PMD) are presented. The PMD will cover the forward
region, within the pseudorapidity range 2.3--3.5, behind the forward time
projection chamber. It will measure the spatial distribution of photons in
order to study collective flow, fluctuation and chiral symmetry restoration.Comment: 15 pages, including 11 figures; to appear in a special NIM volume

Neurosurgical randomized trials in low-and middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: The setting of a randomized trial can determine whether its findings are generalizable and can therefore apply to different settings. The contribution of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to neurosurgical randomized trials has not been systematically described before.OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic analysis of design characteristics and methodology, funding source, and interventions studied between trials led by and/or conducted in high-income countries (HICs) vs LMICs.METHODS: From January 2003 to July 2016, English-language trials with >5 patients assessing any one neurosurgical procedure against another procedure, nonsurgical treatment, or no treatment were retrieved from MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. Income classification for each country was assessed using the World Bank Atlas method.RESULTS: A total of 73.3% of the 397 studies that met inclusion criteria were led by HICs, whereas 26.7% were led by LMICs. Of the 106 LMIC-led studies, 71 were led by China. If China is excluded, only 8.8% were led by LMICs. HIC-led trials enrolled a median of 92 patients vs a median of 65 patients in LMIC-led trials. HIC-led trials enrolled from 7.6 sites vs 1.8 sites in LMIC-led studies. Over half of LMIC-led trials were institutionally funded (54.7%). The majority of both HIC- and LMIC-led trials evaluated spinal neurosurgery, 68% and 71.7%, respectively.CONCLUSION: We have established that there is a substantial disparity between HICs and LMICs in the number of published neurosurgical trials. A concerted effort to invest in research capacity building in LMICs is an essential step towards ensuring context- and resource-specific high-quality evidence is generated.Scientific Assessment and Innovation in Neurosurgical Treatment Strategie
Particle density fluctuations
Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and
photons at SPS energies are discussed. Fluctuations are studied by controlling
the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors.
Results are also presented on the event-by-event study of correlations between
the multiplicity of charged particles and photons to search for DCC-like
signals.Comment: Talk presented at Quark Matter 2002, Nantes, Franc
Spin-Charge Separation in the Model: Magnetic and Transport Anomalies
A real spin-charge separation scheme is found based on a saddle-point state
of the model. In the one-dimensional (1D) case, such a saddle-point
reproduces the correct asymptotic correlations at the strong-coupling
fixed-point of the model. In the two-dimensional (2D) case, the transverse
gauge field confining spinon and holon is shown to be gapped at {\em finite
doping} so that a spin-charge deconfinement is obtained for its first time in
2D. The gap in the gauge fluctuation disappears at half-filling limit, where a
long-range antiferromagnetic order is recovered at zero temperature and spinons
become confined. The most interesting features of spin dynamics and transport
are exhibited at finite doping where exotic {\em residual} couplings between
spin and charge degrees of freedom lead to systematic anomalies with regard to
a Fermi-liquid system. In spin dynamics, a commensurate antiferromagnetic
fluctuation with a small, doping-dependent energy scale is found, which is
characterized in momentum space by a Gaussian peak at (, ) with
a doping-dependent width (, is the doping
concentration). This commensurate magnetic fluctuation contributes a
non-Korringa behavior for the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate. There also
exits a characteristic temperature scale below which a pseudogap behavior
appears in the spin dynamics. Furthermore, an incommensurate magnetic
fluctuation is also obtained at a {\em finite} energy regime. In transport, a
strong short-range phase interference leads to an effective holon Lagrangian
which can give rise to a series of interesting phenomena including linear-
resistivity and Hall-angle. We discuss the striking similarities of these
theoretical features with those found in the high- cuprates and give aComment: 70 pages, RevTex, hard copies of 7 figures available upon request;

Search for DCC in 158A GeV Pb+Pb Collisions
A detailed analysis of the phase space distributions of charged particles and
photons have been carried out using two independent methods. The results
indicate the presence of nonstatistical fluctuations in localized regions of
phase space.Comment: Talk at the PANIC99 Conference, June 9-16, 199
Present Status and Future of DCC Analysis
Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC) have been predicted to form in high
energy heavy ion collisions where the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD has
been restored. This leads to large imbalances in the production of charged to
neutral pions. Sophisticated analysis methods are being developed to
disentangle DCC events out of the large background of events with
conventionally produced particles. We present a short review of current
analysis methods and future prospects.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Invited talk presented at the 13th International

Central Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 A GeV/c Studied by Pion-Pion Interferometry
Two-particle correlations have been measured for identified negative pions
from central 158 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions and fitted radii of about 7 fm in all
dimensions have been obtained. A multi-dimensional study of the radii as a
function of kT is presented, including a full correction for the resolution
effects of the apparatus. The cross term Rout-long of the standard fit in the
Longitudinally CoMoving System (LCMS) and the vl parameter of the generalised
Yano-Koonin fit are compatible with 0, suggesting that the source undergoes a
boost invariant expansion. The shapes of the correlation functions in Qinv and
Qspace have been analyzed in detail. They are not Gaussian but better
represented by exponentials. As a consequence, fitting Gaussians to these
correlation functions may produce different radii depending on the acceptance
of the experimental setup used for the measurement.Comment: 13 pages including 10 figure
