Metastasis: Recent Discoveries and Novel Perioperative Treatment Strategies with Particular Interest in the Hemostatic Compound Desmopressin
Metastatic disease is responsible for most of cancer lethality. A main obstacle for therapy of advanced cancers is that the outcome of metastasis depends on a complex interplay between malignant and host cells. The perioperative period represents an underutilized window of opportunity for cancer treatment where tumor-host interactions can be modulated, reducing the risk of local recurrences and distant metastases. Blood-saving agents are attractive compounds to be administered during tumor surgery. Desmopressin (DDAVP) is a safe and convenient hemostatic peptide with proved antimetastastic properties in experimental models and veterinary clinical trials. The compound seems to induce a dual angiostatic and antimetastatic effect, breaking the cooperative function of cancer cells and endothelial cells during residual tumor progression. DDAVP is therefore an interesting lead compound to develop novel synthetic peptide analogs with enhanced antitumor properties
From E_8 to F via T
We argue that T-duality and F-theory appear automatically in the E_8 gauge
bundle perspective of M-theory. The 11-dimensional supergravity four-form
determines an E_8 bundle. If we compactify on a two-torus, this data specifies
an LLE_8 bundle where LG is a centrally-extended loopgroup of G. If one of the
circles of the torus is smaller than sqrt(alpha') then it is also smaller than
a nontrivial circle S in the LLE_8 fiber and so a dimensional reduction on the
total space of the bundle is not valid. We conjecture that S is the circle on
which the T-dual type IIB theory is compactified, with the aforementioned torus
playing the role of the F-theory torus. As tests we reproduce the T-dualities
between NS5-branes and KK-monopoles, as well as D6 and D7-branes where we find
the desired F-theory monodromy. Using Hull's proposal for massive IIA, this
realization of T-duality allows us to confirm that the Romans mass is the
central extension of our LE_8. In addition this construction immediately
reproduces the conjectured formula for global topology change from T-duality
with H-flux.Comment: 25 pages, 4 eps figure
Studying Kaon-pion S-wave scattering in K-matrix formalism
We generalize our previous work on \pi\pi scattering to K\pi scattering, and
re-analyze the experiment data of K\pi scattering below 1.6 GeV. Without any
free parameter, we explain K\pi I=3/2 S-wave phase shift very well by using
t-channel rho and u-channel K^* meson exchange. With the t-channel and
u-channel meson exchange fixed as the background term, we fit the K\pi I=1/2
S-wave data of the LASS experiment quite well by introducing one or two
s-channel resonances. It is found that there is only one s-channel resonance
between K\pi threshold and 1.6 GeV, i.e., K_0^*(1430) with a mass around
1438~1486 MeV and a width about 346 MeV, while the t-channel rho exchange gives
a pole at (450-480i) MeV for the amplitude.Comment: REVTeX4 file, 11 pages and 3 figure
On search for new Higgs physics in CDF at the Tevatron
We discuss the Higgs boson mass sum rules in the Minimal Supersymmetric
Standard Model in order to estimate the upper limits on the masses of stop
quarks as well as the lower bounds on the masses of the scalar Higgs boson
state. The bounds on the scale of quark-lepton compositeness derived from the
CDF Collaboration (Fermilab Tevatron) data and applied to new extra gauge boson
search is taken into account. These extra gauge bosons are considered in the
framework of the extended SU(2)_h \times SU(2)_l model. In addition, we discuss
the physics of rare decays of the MSSM Higgs bosons in both CP-even and CP-odd
sectors and also some extra gauge bosons.Comment: 24 pages, LaTeX, 8 figure
CMB Imprints of a Pre-Inflationary Climbing Phase
We discuss the implications for cosmic microwave background (CMB)
observables, of a class of pre-inflationary dynamics suggested by string models
where SUSY is broken due to the presence of D-branes and orientifolds
preserving incompatible portions of it. In these models the would-be inflaton
is forced to emerge from the initial singularity climbing up a mild exponential
potential, until it bounces against a steep exponential potential of "brane
SUSY breaking" scenarios, and as a result the ensuing descent gives rise to an
inflationary epoch that begins when the system is still well off its eventual
attractor. If a pre-inflationary climbing phase of this type had occurred
within 6-7 e-folds of the horizon exit for the largest observable wavelengths,
displacement off the attractor and initial-state effects would conspire to
suppress power in the primordial scalar spectrum, enhancing it in the tensor
spectrum and typically superposing oscillations on both. We investigate these
imprints on CMB observables over a range of parameters, examine their
statistical significance, and provide a semi-analytic rationale for our
results. It is tempting to ascribe at least part of the large-angle anomalies
in the CMB to pre-inflationary dynamics of this type.Comment: 38 pages, LaTeX, 11 eps figures, references added, matches version to

Slepton and Neutralino/Chargino Coannihilations in MSSM
Within the low-energy effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of Standard
Model (effMSSM) we calculated the neutralino relic density taking into account
slepton-neutralino and neutralino-chargino/neutralino coannihilation channels.
We performed comparative study of these channels and obtained that both of them
give sizable contributions to the reduction of the relic density. Due to these
coannihilation processes some models (mostly with large neutralino masses)
enter into the cosmologically interesting region for relic density, but other
models leave this region. Nevertheless, in general, the predictions for direct
and indirect dark matter detection rates are not strongly affected by these
coannihilation channels in the effMSSM.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, revte
Can R-parity violation explain the LSND data as well?
The recent Super-Kamiokande data now admit only one type of mass hierarchy in
a framework with three active and one sterile neutrinos. We show that neutrino
masses and mixings generated by R-parity-violating couplings, with values
within their experimental upper limits, are capable of reproducing this
hierarchy, explaining all neutrino data particularly after including the LSND
results.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, 3 PS figures; in v2 a few clarifying remarks included

Charged lepton Flavor Violation in Supersymmetry with Bilinear R-Parity Violation
The simplest unified extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
with bi-linear R-parity violation naturally predicts a hierarchical neutrino
mass spectrum, suitable to explain atmospheric and solar neutrino fluxes. We
study whether the individual violation of the lepton numbers L_{e,mu,tau} in
the charged sector can lead to measurable rates for BR(mu->e gamma)and
$BR(tau-> mu gamma). We find that some of the R-parity violating terms that are
compatible with the observed atmospheric neutrino oscillations could lead to
rates for mu->e gamma measurable in projected experiments. However, the Delta
m^2_{12} obtained for those parameters is too high to be compatible with the
solar neutrino data, excluding therefore the possibility of having measurable
rates for mu->e gamma in the model.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures. Constraint from solar neutrino data included,

Yukawa coupling unification and non-universal gaugino mediation of supersymmetry breaking
The requirement of Yukawa coupling unification highly constrains the SUSY
parameter space. In several SUSY breaking scenarios it is hard to reconcile
Yukawa coupling unification with experimental constraints from B(b->s gamma)
and the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_mu. We show that b-tau or even t-b-tau
Yukawa unification can be satisfied simultaneously with b->s gamma and a_mu in
the non-universal gaugino mediation scenario. Non-universal gaugino masses
naturally appear in higher dimensional grand unified models in which gauge
symmetry is broken by orbifold compactification. Relations between SUSY
contributions to fermion masses, b->s gamma and a_mu which are typical for
models with universal gaugino masses are relaxed. Consequently, these
phenomenological constraints can be satisfied simultaneously with a relatively
light SUSY spectrum, compared to models with universal gaugino masses.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. References added. A copy of the paper with

Neutralino Dark Matter, b-tau Yukawa Unification and Non-Universal Sfermion Masses
We study the implications of minimal non-Universal Boundary Conditions in the
sfermion Soft SUSY Breaking (SSB) masses of mSUGRA. We impose asymptotic b-tau
Yukawa coupling Unification and we resort to a parameterization of the
deviation from Universality in the SSB motivated by the multiplet structure of
SU(5) GUT. A set of cosmo-phenomenological constraints, including the recent
results from WMAP, determines the allowed parameter space of the models under
consideration. We highlight a new coannihilation corridor where
neutralino-sbottom and neutralino-tau sneutrino-stau coannihilations
significantly contribute to the reduction of the neutralino relic density.Comment: 38 pages, 27 Figures, Latex; Version accepted for publication in PR
