Type IIA Orientifold Limit of M-Theory on Compact Joyce 8-Manifold of Spin(7)-Holonomy
We show that M-theory compactified on a compact Joyce 8-manifold of
-holonomy, which yields an effective theory in with = 1
supersymmetry, admits at some special points in it moduli space a description
in terms of type IIA theory on an orientifold of compact Joyce 7-manifold of
-holonomy. We find the evidence in favour of this duality by computing the
massless spectra on both M-thory side and type IIA side. For the latter, we
compute the massless spectra by going to the orbifold limit of the Joyce
7-manifold.Comment: 26 pages, 2 eps figures, Latex file, two references and one footnote

Insight into aspheric misfit with hard tools: mapping the island of low mid-spatial frequencies
This paper addresses computer numerical control (CNC) polishing of aspheric or freeform optics. Prior CNC grinding of the asphere tends to produce mid-spatial frequencies (MSFs) at some level. Precessions polishing can rectify these, but the very ability of the bonnet tooling to adapt to the local asphere enables it to do so, at least in part, to similar spatial frequencies in the MSFs. To accelerate smoothing, hard tools can, in principle, be used, but aspheric misfit is often assumed to preclude this. In this paper, we explore new insight into the role of abrasive particle size in accommodating misfit. First, we report on a glass-bending rig to produce a continuous range of complex surfaces, while withstanding process forces. Then, we describe how this was used to evaluate the triangle of misfit, abrasive size, and MSFs produced for hard rotating tools. This has revealed a regime in which such tools can be used without introducing significant new MSFs, as evidenced by manufacture of prototype off-axis aspheric segments for the European Extremely Large Telescope project
Intensification of the Decadal Activity in Equatorial Rossby Waves and Linkage to Changing Tropical Circulation
Equatorial Rossby waves (ERWs) are manifest as westward-propagating, planetary-scale waves that feature a symmetric pair of pressure and zonal wind fields about the equator. ERWs can modulate tropical convective activity, especially in South Asia and the Maritime Continents, and represent an important mode of intraseasonal variability additional to the Madden-Julian Oscillation. Changes in the frequency and intensity of ERWs during the recent decades were investigated based on observations of tropospheric winds and tropical convection. Spectral analyses indicated that ERWs appear to have intensified especially in the upper troposphere; this is associated with increased convective activity located off the equator. The strengthening and westward shift of the Walker circulation observed in the recent decades acted to increase the tropical vertical westerly shear and, subsequently, may contribute to the increased ERW activity. Further investigation on the dynamical process of the vertical zonal shear enhancement will improve the understanding of the changing ERW characteristics
Elevated-temperature impact toughness of Mg–(Gd, Y)–Zr alloy
The Charpy impact results for Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr and Mg–11Y–5Gd–2Zn–0.5Zr alloys at various temperatures showed that Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr was more sensitive to temperature. The increase in impact toughness with temperature was related to the blunt crack-tip at high temperatures. The delamination and local melt of matrix were responsible for the brittle-to-ductile transition of GW103 alloy. The branch and bridging of cracks resulting from ordered phases played an import role in the change in fracture mode from cleavage fracture to quasi-cleavage and dimple-fracture for WGZ1152 alloy
First-principles Calculation of the Formation Energy in MgO-CaO Solid Solutions
The electronic structure and total energy were calculated for ordered and
disordered MgO-CaO solid solutions within the multiple scattering theory in
real space and the local density approximation. Based on the dependence of the
total energy on the unit cell volume the equilibrium lattice parameter and
formation energy were determined for different solution compositions. The
formation energy of the solid solutions is found to be positive that is in
agreement with the experimental phase diagram, which shows a miscibility gap.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
2D vs. 3D pain visualization: User preferences in a spinal cord injury cohort
This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2011 Springer VerlagResearch on pain experienced after Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) has revealed that not only are there several types of pain present in the same individual with this kind of trauma, but also that people who suffer such an injury can describe the characteristics of the same type of pain in different ways. Making it possible, therefore, to more precisely describe pain experience could prove to be vital for an increased quality of life. Accordingly, fifteen individuals with pain after SCI were asked to describe their pain experience using a 3 Dimensional (3D) model of the human body that could be used as an aid in communicating their pain. The results of this study suggest that the consensus of the participants approved the ability of the 3D model to more accurately describe their pain, an encouraging outcome towards the use of 3D technology in support of post SCI pain rehabilitation
A Fully Differential Digital CMOS Pulse UWB Generator
A new fully-digital CMOS pulse generator for impulse-radio Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) systems is presented. First, the shape of the pulse which best fits the FCC regulation in the 3.1-5 GHz sub-band of the entire 3.1-10.6 GHz UWB bandwidth is derived and approximated using rectangular digital pulses. In particular, the number and width of pulses that approximate an ideal template is found through an ad-hoc optimization methodology. Then a fully differential digital CMOS circuit that synthesizes the pulse sequence is conceived and its functionality demonstrated through post-layout simulations. The results show a very good agreement with the FCC requirements and a low power consumptio
Supercritical biharmonic equations with power-type nonlinearity
The biharmonic supercritical equation , where and
, is studied in the whole space as well as in a
modified form with as right-hand-side with an additional
eigenvalue parameter in the unit ball, in the latter case together
with Dirichlet boundary conditions. As for entire regular radial solutions we
prove oscillatory behaviour around the explicitly known radial {\it singular}
solution, provided , where
is a further critical exponent, which was introduced in a recent work by
Gazzola and the second author. The third author proved already that these
oscillations do not occur in the complementing case, where .
Concerning the Dirichlet problem we prove existence of at least one singular
solution with corresponding eigenvalue parameter. Moreover, for the extremal
solution in the bifurcation diagram for this nonlinear biharmonic eigenvalue
problem, we prove smoothness as long as
Open su(4)-invariant spin ladder with boundary defects
The integrable su(4)-invariant spin-ladder model with boundary defect is
studied using the Bethe ansatz method. The exact phase diagram for the ground
state is given and the boundary quantum critical behavior is discussed. It
consists of a gapped phase in which the rungs of the ladder form singlet states
and a gapless Luttinger liquid phase. It is found that in the gapped phase the
boundary bound state corresponds to an unscreened local moment, while in the
Luttinger liquid phase the local moment is screened at low temperatures in
analogy to the Kondo effect.Comment: Revtex 9 pages, published in PR
