A rigorous evaluation of crossover and mutation in genetic programming
The role of crossover and mutation in Genetic Programming (GP) has been the subject of much debate since the emergence of the field. In this paper, we contribute new empirical evidence to this argument using a rigorous and principled experimental method applied to six problems common in the GP literature. The approach tunes the algorithm parameters to enable a fair and objective comparison of two different GP algorithms, the first using a combination of crossover and reproduction, and secondly using a combination of mutation and reproduction. We find that crossover does not significantly outperform mutation on most of the problems examined. In addition, we demonstrate that the use of a straightforward Design of Experiments methodology is effective at tuning GP algorithm parameters
A black ring with a rotating 2-sphere
We present a solution of the vacuum Einstein's equations in five dimensions
corresponding to a black ring with horizon topology S^1 x S^2 and rotation in
the azimuthal direction of the S^2. This solution has a regular horizon up to a
conical singularity, which can be placed either inside the ring or at infinity.
This singularity arises due to the fact that this black ring is not balanced.
In the infinite radius limit we correctly reproduce the Kerr black string, and
taking another limit we recover the Myers-Perry black hole with a single
angular momentum.Comment: 10 page
A 3D geological model for B90745 North Trans Pennine Electrification East between Leeds and York
This report and accompanying 3D geological model were produced for Tata Steel Projects. The report describes the bedrock and Quaternary geology of the study area, comprising 28 km (17.5 miles) of railway line between Leeds and York. The description and spatial distribution of each geological unit is based on the 3D geological model, which was constructed using 1:10,000 scale digital geological map data and 102 borehole logs from the British Geological Survey’s national archive. All boreholes located within the modelled area were considered in the construction of the geological model, together with key boreholes that fall outside the area of study. The top and base of weathered rock as defined is depicted as layers within the model
Spin diffusion at finite electric and magnetic fields
Spin transport properties at finite electric and magnetic fields are studied
by using the generalized semiclassical Boltzmann equation. It is found that the
spin diffusion equation for non-equilibrium spin density and spin currents
involves a number of length scales that explicitly depend on the electric and
magnetic fields. The set of macroscopic equations can be used to address a
broad range of the spin transport problems in magnetic multilayers as well as
in semiconductor heterostructure. A specific example of spin injection into
semiconductors at arbitrary electric and magnetic fields is illustrated
Giant gravitons in AdS/CFT (I): matrix model and back reaction
In this article we study giant gravitons in the framework of AdS/CFT
correspondence. First, we show how to describe these configurations in the CFT
side using a matrix model. In this picture, giant gravitons are realized as
single excitations high above a Fermi sea, or as deep holes into it. Then, we
give a prescription to define quasi-classical states and we recover the known
classical solution associated to the CFT dual of a giant graviton that grows in
AdS. Second, we use the AdS/CFT dictionary to obtain the supergravity boundary
stress tensor of a general state and to holographically reconstruct the bulk
metric, obtaining the back reaction of space-time. We find that the space-time
response to all the supersymmetric giant graviton states is of the same form,
producing the singular BPS limit of the three charge Reissner-Nordstr\"om-AdS
black holes. While computing the boundary stress tensor, we comment on the
finite counterterm recently introduced by Liu and Sabra, and connect it to a
scheme-dependent conformal anomaly.Comment: 28 pages, JHEP3 class. v2: typos corrected and references adde
Field Theoretical Quantum Effects on the Kerr Geometry
We study quantum aspects of the Einstein gravity with one time-like and one
space-like Killing vector commuting with each other. The theory is formulated
as a \coset nonlinear -model coupled to gravity. The quantum analysis
of the nonlinear -model part, which includes all the dynamical degrees
of freedom, can be carried out in a parallel way to ordinary nonlinear
-models in spite of the existence of an unusual coupling. This means
that we can investigate consistently the quantum properties of the Einstein
gravity, though we are limited to the fluctuations depending only on two
coordinates. We find the forms of the beta functions to all orders up to
numerical coefficients. Finally we consider the quantum effects of the
renormalization on the Kerr black hole as an example. It turns out that the
asymptotically flat region remains intact and stable, while, in a certain
approximation, it is shown that the inner geometry changes considerably however
small the quantum effects may be.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX. The hep-th number added on the cover, and minor

Five Dimensional Rotating Black Hole in a Uniform Magnetic Field. The Gyromagnetic Ratio
In four dimensional general relativity, the fact that a Killing vector in a
vacuum spacetime serves as a vector potential for a test Maxwell field provides
one with an elegant way of describing the behaviour of electromagnetic fields
near a rotating Kerr black hole immersed in a uniform magnetic field. We use a
similar approach to examine the case of a five dimensional rotating black hole
placed in a uniform magnetic field of configuration with bi-azimuthal symmetry,
that is aligned with the angular momenta of the Myers-Perry spacetime. Assuming
that the black hole may also possess a small electric charge we construct the
5-vector potential of the electromagnetic field in the Myers-Perry metric using
its three commuting Killing vector fields. We show that, like its four
dimensional counterparts, the five dimensional Myers-Perry black hole rotating
in a uniform magnetic field produces an inductive potential difference between
the event horizon and an infinitely distant surface. This potential difference
is determined by a superposition of two independent Coulomb fields consistent
with the two angular momenta of the black hole and two nonvanishing components
of the magnetic field. We also show that a weakly charged rotating black hole
in five dimensions possesses two independent magnetic dipole moments specified
in terms of its electric charge, mass, and angular momentum parameters. We
prove that a five dimensional weakly charged Myers-Perry black hole must have
the value of the gyromagnetic ratio g=3.Comment: 23 pages, REVTEX, v2: Minor changes, v3: Minor change
A Higher Dimensional Stationary Rotating Black Hole Must be Axisymmetric
A key result in the proof of black hole uniqueness in 4-dimensions is that a
stationary black hole that is ``rotating''--i.e., is such that the stationary
Killing field is not everywhere normal to the horizon--must be axisymmetric.
The proof of this result in 4-dimensions relies on the fact that the orbits of
the stationary Killing field on the horizon have the property that they must
return to the same null geodesic generator of the horizon after a certain
period, . This latter property follows, in turn, from the fact that the
cross-sections of the horizon are two-dimensional spheres. However, in
spacetimes of dimension greater than 4, it is no longer true that the orbits of
the stationary Killing field on the horizon must return to the same null
geodesic generator. In this paper, we prove that, nevertheless, a higher
dimensional stationary black hole that is rotating must be axisymmetric. No
assumptions are made concerning the topology of the horizon cross-sections
other than that they are compact. However, we assume that the horizon is
non-degenerate and, as in the 4-dimensional proof, that the spacetime is
analytic.Comment: 24 pages, no figures, v2: footnotes and references added, v3:
