Stellar populations of classical and pseudo-bulges for a sample of isolated spiral galaxies
In this paper we present the stellar population synthesis results for a
sample of 75 bulges in isolated spiral Sb-Sc galaxies, using the spectroscopic
data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the STARLIGHT code. We find that
both pseudo-bulges and classical bulges in our sample are predominantly
composed of old stellar populations, with mean mass-weighted stellar age around
10 Gyr. While the stellar population of pseudo-bulges is, in general, younger
than that of classical bulges, the difference is not significant, which
indicates that it is hard to distinguish pseudo-bulges from classical bulges,
at least for these isolated galaxies, only based on their stellar populations.
Pseudo-bulges have star formation activities with relatively longer timescale
than classical bulges, indicating that secular evolution is more important in
this kind of systems. Our results also show that pseudo-bulges have a lower
stellar velocity dispersion than their classical counterparts, which suggests
that classical bulges are more dispersion-supported than pseudo-bulges.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

YREC: The Yale Rotating Stellar Evolution Code
The stellar evolution code YREC is outlined with emphasis on its applications
to helio- and asteroseismology. The procedure for calculating calibrated solar
and stellar models is described. Other features of the code such as a non-local
treatment of convective core overshoot, and the implementation of a
parametrized description of turbulence in stellar models, are considered in
some detail. The code has been extensively used for other astrophysical

Critical Exponents for Three-Dimensional Superfluid--Bose-Glass Phase Transition
The critical phenomenon of the zero temperature superfluid--Bose-glass phase
transition for hard-core bosons on a three-dimensional disordered lattice is
studied using a quantum real-space renormalization-group method. The
correlation-length exponent and the dynamic exponent z are computed. The
critical exponent z is found to be 2.5 for compressible states and 1.3 for
incompressible states. The exponent is shown to be insensitive to z as
that in the two-dimensional case, and has value roughly equal to 1.Comment: 11 pages, REVTE

three-dimensional random resistor network at the percolation threshold. For

Variational Multiscale Stabilization and the Exponential Decay of Fine-scale Correctors
This paper addresses the variational multiscale stabilization of standard
finite element methods for linear partial differential equations that exhibit
multiscale features. The stabilization is of Petrov-Galerkin type with a
standard finite element trial space and a problem-dependent test space based on
pre-computed fine-scale correctors. The exponential decay of these correctors
and their localisation to local cell problems is rigorously justified. The
stabilization eliminates scale-dependent pre-asymptotic effects as they appear
for standard finite element discretizations of highly oscillatory problems,
e.g., the poor approximation in homogenization problems or the pollution
effect in high-frequency acoustic scattering
Disordered Boson Systems: A Perturbative Study
A hard-core disordered boson system is mapped onto a quantum spin 1/2
XY-model with transverse random fields. It is then generalized to a system of
spins with an arbitrary magnitude S and studied through a 1/S expansion. The
first order 1/S expansion corresponds to a spin-wave theory. The effect of weak
disorder is studied perturbatively within such a first order 1/S scheme. We
compute the reduction of the speed of sound and the life time of the Bloch
phonons in the regime of weak disorder. Generalizations of the present study to

Constraining the expansion rate of the Universe using low-redshift ellipticals as cosmic chronometers
We present a new methodology to determine the expansion history of the
Universe analyzing the spectral properties of early type galaxies (ETG). We
found that for these galaxies the 4000\AA break is a spectral feature that
correlates with the relative ages of ETGs. In this paper we describe the
method, explore its robustness using theoretical synthetic stellar population
models, and apply it using a SDSS sample of 14 000 ETGs. Our motivation
to look for a new technique has been to minimise the dependence of the cosmic
chronometer method on systematic errors. In particular, as a test of our
method, we derive the value of the Hubble constant (stat)
(syst) (68% confidence), which is not only fully compatible with the
value derived from the Hubble key project, but also with a comparable error
budget. Using the SDSS, we also derive, assuming w=constant, a value for the
dark energy equation of state parameter (stat)
(syst). Given the fact that the SDSS ETG sample only reaches , this
result shows the potential of the method. In future papers we will present
results using the high-redshift universe, to yield a determination of H(z) up

The Minimal Supersymmetric Fat Higgs Model
We present a calculable supersymmetric theory of a composite ``fat'' Higgs
boson. Electroweak symmetry is broken dynamically through a new gauge
interaction that becomes strong at an intermediate scale. The Higgs mass can
easily be 200-450 GeV along with the superpartner masses, solving the
supersymmetric little hierarchy problem. We explicitly verify that the model is
consistent with precision electroweak data without fine-tuning. Gauge coupling
unification can be maintained despite the inherently strong dynamics involved
in electroweak symmetry breaking. Supersymmetrizing the Standard Model
therefore does not imply a light Higgs mass, contrary to the lore in the
literature. The Higgs sector of the minimal Fat Higgs model has a mass spectrum
that is distinctly different from the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, REVTe
Percepção ambiental dos produtores e qualidade do solo em propriedades orgânicas e convencionais.
O sistema orgânico de produção deve resultar na utilização mais racional dos recursos naturais, sobretudo do solo. Os produtores orgânicos devem adotar práticas conservacionistas, além de atender a outros princípios deste sistema de produção. Neste trabalho foram avaliadas as práticas de manejo e conservação do solo adotadas por produtores orgânicos e convencionais nas regiões dos municípios de Socorro (Serra da Mantiqueira e Mogiana) e Ibiúna, situados no Estado de São Paulo. O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi verificar o grau de adoção de práticas conservacionistas pelos produtores e avaliar a qualidade do solo na agricultura orgânica e convencional. Foi elaborado e aplicado um questionário, com visitas locais para verificação das práticas conservacionistas e ocorrência de erosão, em 30 propriedades. Os resultados foram expressos em índices indicadores de diversidade de uso do solo, atitude conservacionista, percepção de erosão e do impacto sobre os recursos hídricos. Foram também realizadas análises de atributos químicos, físicos e biológicos indicadores da qualidade do solo. Concluiu-se que os produtores orgânicos têm maior percepção quanto à atitude conservacionista e nas propriedades orgânicas há maior diversidade de cultivos, embora não haja maior diversidade geral de uso do solo. A produção orgânica de alface, em Ibiúna proporcionou maior atividade biológica no solo e maior colonização por fungos micorrízicos arbusculares. O sistema orgânico possui maiores teores de matéria orgânica e menores de potássio e não houve diferença entre os atributos físicos do solo dos sistemas orgânico e convencional
