    A service oriented architecture for decision making in engineering design

    Decision making in engineering design can be effectively addressed by using genetic algorithms to solve multi-objective problems. These multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGAs) are well suited to implementation in a Service Oriented Architecture. Often the evaluation process of the MOGA is compute-intensive due to the use of a complex computer model to represent the real-world system. The emerging paradigm of Grid Computing offers a potential solution to the compute-intensive nature of this objective function evaluation, by allowing access to large amounts of compute resources in a distributed manner.     Optimizing the DFCN Broadcast Protocol with a Parallel Cooperative Strategy of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms

    Proceeding of: 5th International Conference, EMO 2009, Nantes, France, April 7-10, 2009This work presents the application of a parallel coopera- tive optimization approach to the broadcast operation in mobile ad-hoc networks (manets). The optimization of the broadcast operation im- plies satisfying several objectives simultaneously, so a multi-objective approach has been designed. The optimization lies on searching the best configurations of the dfcn broadcast protocol for a given manet sce- nario. The cooperation of a team of multi-objective evolutionary al- gorithms has been performed with a novel optimization model. Such model is a hybrid parallel algorithm that combines a parallel island- based scheme with a hyperheuristic approach. Results achieved by the algorithms in different stages of the search process are analyzed in order to grant more computational resources to the most suitable algorithms.     Recovery of dialysis patients with COVID-19 : health outcomes 3 months after diagnosis in ERACODA

    Background. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related short-term mortality is high in dialysis patients, but longer-term outcomes are largely unknown. We therefore assessed patient recovery in a large cohort of dialysis patients 3 months after their COVID-19 diagnosis. Methods. We analyzed data on dialysis patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from 1 February 2020 to 31 March 2021 from the European Renal Association COVID-19 Database (ERACODA). The outcomes studied were patient survival, residence and functional and mental health status (estimated by their treating physician) 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis. Complete follow-up data were available for 854 surviving patients. Patient characteristics associated with recovery were analyzed using logistic regression. Results. In 2449 hemodialysis patients (mean ± SD age 67.5 ± 14.4 years, 62% male), survival probabilities at 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis were 90% for nonhospitalized patients (n = 1087), 73% for patients admitted to the hospital but not to an intensive care unit (ICU) (n = 1165) and 40% for those admitted to an ICU (n = 197). Patient survival hardly decreased between 28 days and 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis. At 3 months, 87% functioned at their pre-existent functional and 94% at their pre-existent mental level. Only few of the surviving patients were still admitted to the hospital (0.8-6.3%) or a nursing home (∼5%). A higher age and frailty score at presentation and ICU admission were associated with worse functional outcome. Conclusions. Mortality between 28 days and 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis was low and the majority of patients who survived COVID-19 recovered to their pre-existent functional and mental health level at 3 months after diagnosis

    Mammalian collectins have been found to play an important role in the defense against influenza A virus H9N2 inoculation, but for chicken collectins this has not yet been clarified. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of avian influenza A virus (AIV) inoculation on collectin gene expression in the respiratory tract of chickens and whether this was affected by age. For this purpose 1- and 4-week-old chickens were inoculated intratracheally with PBS or H9N2 AIV. Chickens were killed at 0, 8, 16 and 24 h postinoculation and trachea and lung were harvested for analysis. Viral RNA expression and mRNA expression of chicken collectins 1 and 2 (cCL-1 and cCL-2), chicken lung lectin (cLL) and chicken surfactant protein A (cSP-A) were determined using real-time quantitative RT-PCR. In lung, a decrease in mRNA expression of cCL-2, cLL and cSP-A after inoculation with H9N2 was seen in both 1- and 4-week-old birds, although at different time points, while in trachea changes were only seen in 4-week-old birds and expression was increased. Moreover, collectin expression correlated with viral RNA expression in lung of 1-week-old birds. These results suggest that both age and location in the respiratory tract affect changes in collectin mRNA expression after inoculation with H9N2 and indicate a possible role for collectins in the host response to AIV in the respiratory tract of chickens

    Evaluation of Sequential, Multi-objective, and Parallel Interactive Genetic Algorithms for Multi-objective Floor Plan Optimisation

    We propose a sequential interactive genetic algorithm (IGA), multi-objective IGA and parallel IGA, and evaluate them with both simulated and real users. Combining human evaluation with an optimization system for engineering design enables us to embed domainspecific knowledge that is frequently hard to describe, i.e. subjective criteria, and design preferences. We introduce a new IGA technique to extend the previously introduced sequential single objective GA and multi-objective GA, viz. parallel IGA. Experimental evaluation of three algorithms with a multi-objective manufacturing plant layout design task shows that the multi-objective IGA and the parallel IGA clearly provide better results than the sequential IGA, and that the multi-objective IGA gives the most diverse results and fastest convergence to a stable set of qualitatively optimum solutions, although the parallel IGA provides the best quantitative fitness convergence
