    Thin Fisher zeros

    Various authors have suggested that the loci of partition function zeros can profitably be regarded as phase boundaries in the complex temperature or field planes. We obtain the Fisher zeros for Ising and Potts models on non-planar ('thin') regular random graphs using this approach, and note that the locus of Fisher zeros on a Bethe lattice is identical to the corresponding random graph. Since the number of states q appears as a parameter in the Potts solution the limiting locus of chromatic zeros is also accessible

    Prepotentials for local mirror symmetry via Calabi-Yau fourfolds

    In this paper, we first derive an intrinsic definition of classical triple intersection numbers of K_S, where S is a complex toric surface, and use this to compute the extended Picard-Fuchs system of K_S of our previous paper, without making use of the instanton expansion. We then extend this formalism to local fourfolds K_X, where X is a complex 3-fold. As a result, we are able to fix the prepotential of local Calabi-Yau threefolds K_S up to polynomial terms of degree 2.     Kinematic characteristics of elite men's 50 km race walking.

    Race walking is an endurance event which also requires great technical ability, particularly with respect to its two distinguishing rules. The 50 km race walk is the longest event in the athletics programme at the Olympic Games. The aims of this observational study were to identify the important kinematic variables in elite men's 50 km race walking, and to measure variation in those variables at different distances. Thirty men were analysed from video data recorded during a World Race Walking Cup competition. Video data were also recorded at four distances during the European Cup Race Walking and 12 men analysed from these data. Two camcorders (50 Hz) recorded at each race for 3D analysis. The results of this study showed that walking speed was associated with both step length (r=0.54,P=0.002) and cadence (r=0.58,P=0.001). While placing the foot further ahead of the body at heel strike was associated with greater step lengths (r=0.45,P=0.013), it was also negatively associated with cadence (r= -0.62,P<0.001). In the World Cup, knee angles ranged between 175 and 186° at initial contact and between 180 and 195° at midstance. During the European Cup, walking speed decreased significantly (F=9.35,P=0.002), mostly due to a decrease in step length between 38.5 and 48.5 km (t=8.59,P=0.014). From this study, it would appear that the key areas a 50 km race walker must develop and coordinate are step length and cadence, although it is also important to ensure legal walking technique is maintained with the onset of fatigue

    Structure and dynamics of the interface between a binary hard-sphere crystal of NaCl type and its coexisting binary fluid

    Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the [100] and [111] orientations of the crystal-melt interface between an ordered two-component hard sphere with a NaCl structure and its coexisting binary hard-sphere fluid. The diameter ratio of the two types of hard spheres making up the mixture is taken to be 0.414. This work complements our earlier interface simulations [J. Chem. Phys.116, 3410] for the same diameter ratio at lower pressures where the smaller component is immiscible in the solid and the fluid mixture coexists with a pure FCC crystal of large particles. Density profiles and diffusion coefficient profiles are presented for the AB interfacial system. We find that for this system, the transition from crystal-like to fluid-like behavior of both the density and diffusion constant profiles occurs over a narrower region than that seen in our previous studies [J. Chem. Phys. 116, 3410] of the FCC/binary fluid system. But similar to what was found in the FCC/binary fluid interface the transition region for the large particle diffusion constant is shifted about the size of the large particles toward the fluid phase relative to that for the small particles.Comment: 8 page

    Adjusting the melting point of a model system via Gibbs-Duhem integration: application to a model of Aluminum

    Model interaction potentials for real materials are generally optimized with respect to only those experimental properties that are easily evaluated as mechanical averages (e.g., elastic constants (at T=0 K), static lattice energies and liquid structure). For such potentials, agreement with experiment for the non-mechanical properties, such as the melting point, is not guaranteed and such values can deviate significantly from experiment. We present a method for re-parameterizing any model interaction potential of a real material to adjust its melting temperature to a value that is closer to its experimental melting temperature. This is done without significantly affecting the mechanical properties for which the potential was modeled. This method is an application of Gibbs-Duhem integration [D. Kofke, Mol. Phys.78, 1331 (1993)]. As a test we apply the method to an embedded atom model of aluminum [J. Mei and J.W. Davenport, Phys. Rev. B 46, 21 (1992)] for which the melting temperature for the thermodynamic limit is 826.4 +/- 1.3K - somewhat below the experimental value of 933K. After re-parameterization, the melting temperature of the modified potential is found to be 931.5K +/- 1.5K.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 4 table

    Impact of Iron-site defects on Superconductivity in LiFeAs

    PW acknowledges funding from the MPG-UBC center and financial support from EPSRC (EP/I031014/1).In conventional s-wave superconductors, only magnetic impurities exhibit impurity bound states, whereas for an s order parameter they can occur for both magnetic and non-magnetic impurities. Impurity bound states in superconductors can thus provide important insight into the order parameter. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of native and engineered iron-site defects in LiFeAs. Detailed comparison of tunneling spectra measured on impurities with spin fluctuation theory reveals a continuous evolution from negligible impurity bound state features for weaker scattering potential to clearly detectable states for somewhat stronger scattering potentials. All bound states for these intermediate strength potentials are pinned at or close to the gap edge of the smaller gap, a phenomenon that we explain and ascribe to multi-orbital physics.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Properties of the Strange Axial Mesons in the Relativized Quark Model

    We studied properties of the strange axial mesons in the relativized quark model. We calculated the K1K_1 decay constant in the quark model and showed how it can be used to extract the K1(3P1)−K1(1P1)K_1 (^3P_1) - K_1 (^1P_1) mixing angle (ΞK\theta_K) from the weak decay τ→K1Μτ\tau \to K_1 \nu_\tau. The ratio BR(τ→ΜτK1(1270))/BR(τ→ΜτK1(1400))BR(\tau \to \nu_\tau K_1 (1270))/BR(\tau\to \nu_\tau K_1(1400)) is the most sensitive measurement and also the most reliable since the largest of the theoretical uncertainties factor out. However the current bounds extracted from the TPC/Two-Gamma collaboration measurements are rather weak: we typically obtain −30oâ‰ČΞKâ‰Č50o-30^o \lesssim \theta_K \lesssim 50^o at 68\% C.L. We also calculated the strong OZI-allowed decays in the pseudoscalar emission model and the flux-tube breaking model and extracted a 3P1−1P1^3P_1 - ^1P_1 mixing angle of ΞK≃45o\theta_K \simeq 45^o. Our analysis also indicates that the heavy quark limit does not give a good description of the strange mesons.Comment: Revised version to be published in Phys. Rev. D. Minor changes.     Matrix ϕ4\phi^4 Models on the Fuzzy Sphere and their Continuum Limits

    We demonstrate that the UV/IR mixing problems found recently for a scalar ϕ4\phi^4 theory on the fuzzy sphere are localized to tadpole diagrams and can be overcome by a suitable modification of the action. This modification is equivalent to normal ordering the ϕ4\phi^4 vertex. In the limit of the commutative sphere, the perturbation theory of this modified action matches that of the commutative theory.Comment: 19 pages of LaTeX, with 3 figure

    Impact of Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Therapy on Chronic Kidney Disease: A Longitudinal Multicenter Study

    Background: Many patients undergoing durable left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Therefore, we investigated the effect of LVAD support on CKD. Methods: A retrospective multicenter cohort study, including all patients undergoing LVAD (HeartMate II (n = 330), HeartMate 3 (n = 22) and HeartWare (n = 48) implantation. In total, 227 (56.8%) patients were implanted as bridge-to-transplantation; 154 (38.5%) as destination therapy; and 19 (4.7%) as bridge-to-decision. Serum creatinine measurements were collected over a 2-year follow-up period. Patients were stratified based on CKD stage. Results: Overall, 400 patients (mean age 53 ± 14 years, 75% male) were included: 186 (46.5%) patients had CKD stage 1 or 2; 93 (23.3%) had CKD stage 3a; 82 (20.5%) had CKD stage 3b; and 39 (9.8%) had CKD stage 4 or 5 prior to LVAD implantation. During a median follow-up of 179 days (IQR 28–627), 32,629 creatinine measurements were available. Improvement of kidney function was noticed in every preoperative CKD-stage group. Following this improvement, estimated glomerular filtration rates regressed to baseline values for all CKD stages. Patients showing early renal function improvement were younger and in worse preoperative condition. Moreover, survival rates were higher in patients showing early improvement (69% vs 56%, log-rank P = 0.013). Conclusions: Renal function following LVAD implantation is characterized by improvement, steady state and subsequent deterioration. Patients who showed early renal function improvement were in worse preoperative condition, however, and had higher survival rates at 2 years of follow-up
