    The Effects of Children's Time Use and Home and Neighborhood Quality on their Body Weight and Cognitive/Behavioral Development

    We estimate a directional distance function to assess the impacts of multiple time-varying parent and child inputs on a cluster of jointly produced child outcomes for children aged 7 to 13 years. The directional distance function specification avoids several well-known empirical problems associated with analysis of household production data, namely, the need to aggregate inputs and outputs, assume separability among inputs and outputs, or estimate reduced form equations. Using a balanced panel of families from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child Sample for 1996 to 2000, we assess the marginal contributions of home and neighborhood environmental quality and children's time allocations, on their math and reading performance, behavior problems, and body mass index. We also measure productivity growth, technical change, efficiency change, and technical efficiency for production of child outcomes. Our results indicate significant jointness among good and bad child outcomes. Significant improvements in children's good outcomes and reductions in bad outcomes are also associated with a better home and parent perceived neighborhood environment, Head Start participation, and increased family time spent together during meals.     Flat control of industrial robotic manipulators

    Published ArticleA new approach to tracking control of industrial robot manipulators is presented in this paper. The highly coupled nonlinear dynamics of a six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) serial robot is decoupled by expressing its variables as a function of a flat output and a finite number of its derivatives. Hence the derivation of the flat output for the 6-DOF robot is presented. With the flat output, trajectories for each of the generalized coordinates are easily designed and open loop control is made possible. Using MATLAB/Simulink Sfunctions combined with the differential flatness property of the robot, trajectory tracking is carried out in closed loop by using a linear flat controller. The merit of this approach reduces the computational complexity of the robot dynamics by allowing online computation of a high order system at a lower computational cost. Using the same processor, the run time for tracking arbitrary trajectories is reduced significantly to about 10 s as compared to 30 min in the original study (Hoifodt, 2011). The design is taken further by including a Jacobian transformation for tracking of trajectories in cartesian space.     Compositions of Magmatic and Impact Melt Sulfides in Tissint And EETA79001: Precursors of Immiscible Sulfide Melt Blebs in Shergottite Impact Melts

    Immiscible sulfide melt spherules are locally very abundant in shergottite impact melts. These melts can also contain samples of Martian atmospheric gases [1], and cosmogenic nuclides [2] that are present in impact melt, but not in the host shergottite, indicating some components in the melt resided at the Martian surface. These observations show that some regolith components are, at least locally, present in the impact melts. This view also suggests that one source of the over-abundant sulfur in these impact melts could be sulfates that are major constituents of Martian regolith, and that the sulfates were reduced during shock heating to sulfide. An alternative view is that sulfide spherules in impact melts are produced solely by melting the crystalline sulfide minerals (dominantly pyrrhotite, Fe(1-x)S) that are present in shergottites [3]. In this abstract we report new analyses of the compositions of sulfide immiscible melt spherules and pyrrhotite in the shergottites Tissint, and EETA79001,507, and we use these data to investigate the possible origins of the immiscible sulfide melt spherules. In particular, we use the metal/S ratios determined in these blebs as potential diagnostic criteria for tracking the source material from which the numerous sulfide blebs were generated by shock in these melts

    Household environmental protection and the intergenerational transmission of human capital

    Abstract The estimated discount rate of parents is used to test a choice-based intergenerational model of the contribution of environment to the cognitive skills of a child of a given endowment. A lower parental discount rate is shown to imply higher cognitive skills of the young child. In the context of the model, estimates also imply that environmental conditions and human capital formation are not separable. Lesser environmental quality raises the costs of human capital formation in children and lesser human capital reduces parents' demand for environmental quality. Environmental quality dierences among families, just like genetic dierences, may persist across generations.

    Multi-technique equation of state for Fe_(2)SiO_4 melt and the density of Fe-bearing silicate melts from 0 to 161 GPa

    We have conducted new equation of state measurements on liquid Fe_(2)SiO_4 in a collaborative, multi-technique study. The liquid density (Ļ), the bulk modulus (K), and its pressure derivative (Kā€²) were measured from 1 atm to 161 GPa using 1-atm double-bob Archimedean, multi-anvil sink/float, and shock wave techniques. Shock compression results on initially molten Fe_(2)SiO_4 (1573 K) fitted with previous work and the ultrasonically measured bulk sound speed (C_o) in shock velocity (U_S)-particle velocity (u_p) space yields the Hugoniot: U_S = 1.58(0.03) u_p + 2.438(0.005) km/s. Sink/float results are in agreement with shock wave and ultrasonic data, consistent with an isothermal K_T = 19.4 GPa and Kā€² = 5.33 at 1500Ā°C. Shock melting of initially solid Fe_(2)SiO_4 (300 K) confirms that the GrĆ¼neisen parameter (Ī³) of this liquid increases upon compression where Ī³ = Ī³_o(Ļ_(o)/Ļ)^q yields a q value of ā€“1.45. Constraints on the liquid fayalite EOS permit the calculation of isentropes for silicate liquids of general composition in the multicomponent system CaO-MgO-Al_(2)O_3-SiO_2-FeO at elevated temperatures and pressures. In our model a whole mantle magma ocean would first crystallize in the mid-lower mantle or at the base of the mantle were it composed of either peridotite or simplified ā€œchondriteā€ liquid, respectively. In regards to the partial melt hypothesis to explain the occurrence and characteristics of ultra-low velocity zones, neither of these candidate liquids would be dense enough to remain at the core mantle boundary on geologic timescales, but our model defines a compositional range of liquids that would be gravitationally stable

    Influence of Fires, Fungi and Mountain Pine Beetles on Development of a Lodgepole Pine Forest in South-Central Oregon

    Virtually pure lodgepole pine stands form an edaphic climax community over large areas of the infertile pumice plateau of south-central Oregon. During our ongoing studies on the dynamics of these forest we developed the scenario that periodic fires create fungal infection courts in damaged roots; in time, advanced decay develops in the butts and stems of these trees. The mountain pine beetle preferentially selects and kills these trees during the flight season. As these outbreaks develop, additional uninfected trees are attacked. In time, the stage is set for subsequent fires as needles drop, snags fall, and logs decay

    Does narrative writing instruction enhance the benefits of expressive writing?

    We examined whether instructing participants to write in a narrative fashion about stressful life events would produce superior physical and psychological health benefits relative to standard expressive writing instructions that do not specify the essay's structure. Undergraduates (N=101) were randomly assigned to engage in two, 20-minute narrative writing, standard expressive writing, or control writing tasks. Follow-up data were obtained one month later. The essays of the narrative writing group evidenced higher levels of narrative structure than did those of the expressive writing group. Greater narrative structure was associated with mental health gains, and self-rated emotionality of the essays was associated with lesser perceived stress at follow-up. In addition, the narrative and expressive writing groups reported lower levels of perceived stress and depressive symptoms relative to controls but did not differ from each other with regard to these outcomes. Health care utilization at follow-up did not vary by group assignment. Findings suggest that both emotional expression and narrative structure may be key factors underlying expressive writing's mental health benefits. Results also suggest that, among college students, instruction in narrative formation does not increase the positive effects of expressive writing relative to standard expressive writing instructions
