Manipulating Majorana fermions in one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gases

Majorana fermions are promising candidates for storing and processing information in topological quantum computation. The ability to control such individual information carriers in trapped ultracold atomic Fermi gases is a novel theme in quantum information science. However, fermionic atoms are neutral and thus are difficult to manipulate. Here, we theoretically investigate the control of emergent Majorana fermions in one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gases. We discuss (i) how to move Majorana fermions by increasing or decreasing an effective Zeeman field, which acts like a solid state control voltage gate; and (ii) how to create a pair of Majorana fermions by adding a magnetic impurity potential. We discuss the experimental realization of our control scheme in an ultracold Fermi gas of 40^{40}K atoms.Comment: 4 papges, 6 figure

Three-phase modular permanent magnet brushless machine for torque boosting on a downsized ICE vehicle

The paper describes a relatively new topology of 3-phase permanent magnet (PM) brushless machine, which offers a number of significant advantages over conventional PM brushless machines for automotive applications, such as electrical torque boosting at low engine speeds for vehicles equipped with downsized internal combustion engine (ICEs). The relative merits of feasible slot/pole number combinations for the proposed 3-phase modular PM brushless ac machine are discussed, and an analytical method for establishing the open-circuit and armature reaction magnetic field distributions when such a machine is equipped with a surface-mounted magnet rotor is presented. The results allow the prediction of the torque, the phase emf, and the self- and mutual winding inductances in closed forms, and provide a basis for comparative studies, design optimization and machine dynamic modeling. However, a more robust machine, in terms of improved containment of the magnets, results when the magnets are buried inside the rotor, which, since it introduces a reluctance torque, also serves to reduce the back-emf, the iron loss and the inverter voltage rating. The performance of a modular PM brushless machine equipped with an interior magnet rotor is demonstrated by measurements on a 22-pole/24-slot prototype torque boosting machine

Turbulence damping as a measure of the flow dimensionality

The dimensionality of turbulence in fluid layers determines their properties. We study electromagnetically driven flows in finite depth fluid layers and show that eddy viscosity, which appears as a result of three-dimensional motions, leads to increased bottom damping. The anomaly coefficient, which characterizes the deviation of damping from the one derived using a quasi-two-dimensional model, can be used as a measure of the flow dimensionality. Experiments in turbulent layers show that when the anomaly coefficient becomes high, the turbulent inverse energy cascade is suppressed. In the opposite limit turbulence can self-organize into a coherent flow.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Comparison of Halbach magnetized brushless machines based on discrete magnet segments or a single ring magnet

This paper compares the air-gap field distribution, cogging torque, back-electromotive-force waveform, and efficiency of brushless machines having a Halbach magnetization produced by either discrete magnet segments or a single ring magnet. Results deduced from finite-element analyses are compared with measurements, and the performance of Halbach magnetized machines is compared with that of machines equipped with radially magnetized magnets

Analytical magnetic field analysis of Halhach magnetized permanent-magnet machines

We develop analytical models for predicting the magnetic field distribution in Halbach magnetized machines. They are formulated in polar coordinates and account for the relative recoil permeability of the magnets. They are applicable to both internal and external rotor permanent-magnet machines with either an iron-cored or air-cored stator and/or rotor. We compare predicted results with those obtained by finite-element analyses and measurements. We show that the air-gap flux density varies significantly with the pole number and that an optimal combination of the magnet thickness and the pole number exists for maximum air-gap flux density, while the back iron can enhance the air-gap field and electromagnetic torque when the radial thickness of the magnet is small

PDE models of adder mechanisms in cellular proliferation

    Get PDF
Cell division is a process that involves many biochemical steps and complex biophysical mechanisms. To simplify the understanding of what triggers cell division, three basic models that subsume more microscopic cellular processes associated with cell division have been proposed. Cells can divide based on the time elapsed since their birth, their size, and/or the volume added since their birth-the timer, sizer, and adder models, respectively. Here, we propose unified adder-sizer models and investigate some of the properties of different adder processes arising in cellular proliferation. Although the adder-sizer model provides a direct way to model cell population structure, we illustrate how it is mathematically related to the well-known model in which cell division depends on age and size. Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to our 2+1-dimensional PDE model are proved, leading to the convergence of the discretized numerical solutions and allowing us to numerically compute the dynamics of cell population densities. We then generalize our PDE model to incorporate recent experimental findings of a system exhibiting mother-daughter correlations in cellular growth rates. Numerical experiments illustrating possible average cell volume blowup and the dynamical behavior of cell populations with mother-daughter correlated growth rates are carried out. Finally, motivated by new experimental findings, we extend our adder model cases where the controlling variable is the added size between DNA replication initiation points in the cell cycle
