Spectral distortion of cosmic background radiation by scattering on hot electrons. Exact calculations
The spectral distortion of the cosmic background radiation produced by the
inverse Compton scattering on hot electrons in clusters of galaxies (thermal
Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect) is calculated for arbitrary optical depth and
electron temperature. The distortion is found by a numerical solution of the
exact Boltzmann equation for the photon distribution function. In the limit of
small optical depth and low electron temperature our results confirm the
previous analyses. In the opposite limits, our method is the only one that
permits to make accurate calculations.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Ap
The application of the global isomorphism to the study of liquid-vapor equilibrium in two and three dimensional Lenard-Jones fluids
We analyze the interrelation between the coexistence curve of the
Lennard-Jones fluid and the Ising model in two and three dimensions within the
global isomorphism approach proposed earlier [V. L. Kulinskii, J. Phys. Chem. B
\textbf{114} 2852 (2010)]. In case of two dimensions we use the exact Onsager
result to construct the binodal of the corresponding Lennard-Jones fluid and
compare it with the results of the simulations. In the three dimensional case
we use available numerical results for the Ising model for the corresponding
mapping. The possibility to observe the singularity of the binodal diameter is
discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Classical Rotons in Cold Atomic Traps
We predict the emergence of a roton minimum in the dispersion relation of
elementary excitations in cold atomic gases in the presence of diffusive light.
In large magneto-topical traps, multiple-scattering of light is responsible for
the collective behavior of the system, which is associated to an effective
Coulomb-like interaction between the atoms. In optically thick clouds, the
re-scattered light undergoes diffusive propagation, which is responsible for a
stochastic short-range force acting on the atoms. We show that the dynamical
competition between these two forces results on a new polariton mode, which
exhibits a roton minimum. Making use of Feynman's formula for the static
structure factor, we show that the roton minimum is related to the appearance
of long-range order in the system.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Computations of Three-Body Continuum Spectra
We formulate a method to solve the coordinate space Faddeev equations for
positive energies. The method employs hyperspherical coordinates and analytical
expressions for the effective potentials at large distances. Realistic
computations of the parameters of the resonances and the strength functions are
carried out for the Borromean halo nucleus 6He (n+n+alpha) for J = 0+, 0-, 1+,

Observation of non-local dielectric relaxation in glycerol
Since its introduction, liquid viscosity and relaxation time have been
considered to be an intrinsic property of the system that is essentially local
in nature and therefore independent of system size. We perform dielectric
relaxation experiments in glycerol, and find that this is the case at high
temperature only. At low temperature, increases with system size and
becomes non-local. We discuss the origin of this effect in a picture based on
liquid elasticity length, the length over which local relaxation events in a
liquid interact via induced elastic waves, and find good agreement between
experiment and theory
Forensic Data Mining: Finding Intrusion Patterns in Evidentiary Data
In The extensive growth of computing networks and tools and tricks for intruding into and attacking networks has underscored the importance of intrusion detection in network security. Yet, contemporary intrusion detection systems (IDS) are limiting in that they typically employ a misuse detection strategy, with searches for patterns of program or user behavior that match known intrusion scenarios, or signatures. Accordingly, there is a need for more robust and adaptive methods for designing and updating intrusion detection systems. One promising approach is the use of data mining methods for discovering intrusion patterns. Discovered patterns and profiles can be translated into classifiers for detecting deviations from normal usage patterns. Among promising mining methods are association rules, link analysis, and rule-induction algorithms. Our particular contribution is a unique approach to combining association rules with link analysis and a rule-induction algorithm to augment intrusion detection systems
Three-Body Halos in Two Dimensions
A method to study weakly bound three-body quantum systems in two dimensions
is formulated in coordinate space for short-range potentials. Occurrences of
spatially extended structures (halos) are investigated. Borromean systems are
shown to exist in two dimensions for a certain class of potentials. An
extensive numerical investigation shows that a weakly bound two-body state
gives rise to two weakly bound three-body states, a reminiscence of the Efimov
effect in three dimensions. The properties of these two states in the weak
binding limit turn out to be universal.

Real-Time Data Processing in the Muon System of the D0 Detector
This paper presents a real-time application of the 16-bit fixed point Digital
Signal Processors (DSPs), in the Muon System of the D0 detector located at the
Fermilab Tevatron, presently the world's highest-energy hadron collider. As
part of the Upgrade for a run beginning in the year 2000, the system is
required to process data at an input event rate of 10 KHz without incurring
significant deadtime in readout. The ADSP21csp01 processor has high I/O
bandwidth, single cycle instruction execution and fast task switching support
to provide efficient multisignal processing. The processor's internal memory
consists of 4K words of Program Memory and 4K words of Data Memory. In addition
there is an external memory of 32K words for general event buffering and 16K
words of Dual Port Memory for input data queuing. This DSP fulfills the
requirement of the Muon subdetector systems for data readout. All error
handling, buffering, formatting and transferring of the data to the various
trigger levels of the data acquisition system is done in software. The
algorithms developed for the system complete these tasks in about 20
microseconds per event.Comment: 4 pages, Presented and published at the 11th IEEE NPSS Real Time
