On the dynamics of mortality and the ephemeral nature of mammalian megafauna
Energy flow through consumer-resource interactions is largely determined by
body size. Allometric relationships govern the dynamics of populations by
impacting rates of reproduction, as well as alternative sources of mortality,
which have differential impacts on smaller to larger organisms. Here we derive
and investigate the timescales associated with four alternative sources of
mortality for terrestrial mammals: mortality from starvation, mortality
associated with aging, mortality from consumption by predators, and mortality
introduced by anthropogenic subsidized harvest. The incorporation of these
allometric relationships into a minimal consumer-resource model illuminates
central constraints that may contribute to the structure of mammalian
communities. Our framework reveals that while starvation largely impacts
smaller-bodied species, the allometry of senescence is expected to be more
difficult to observe. In contrast, external predation and subsidized harvest
have greater impacts on the populations of larger-bodied species. Moreover, the
inclusion of predation mortality reveals mass thresholds for mammalian
herbivores, where dynamic instabilities may limit the feasibility of megafaunal
populations. We show how these thresholds vary with alternative predator-prey
mass relationships, which are not well understood within terrestrial systems.
Finally, we use our framework to predict the harvest pressure required to
induce mass-specific extinctions, which closely align with previous estimates
of anthropogenic megafaunal exploitation in both paleontological and historical
contexts. Together our results underscore the tenuous nature of megafaunal
populations, and how different sources of mortality may contribute to their
ephemeral nature over evolutionary time.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, 4 appendices, 8 supplementary figure
Dynamics and mass balance of El Chichón crater lake, Mexico.
The mass balance of El Chichón crater lake is controlled by precipitations, evaporation and seepage through the lake bottom.
The main non-meteoric source of water and Cl for the lake is a boiling spring (Soap Pool) discharging saline and neutral
water with a variable flow rate from 0 to 30 kg/s inside the El Chichón crater. Variations in lake volume over time were approximately
determined from digitized photographic views of the lake using an empirical relationship between depth of the lake and
surface area, obtained after four bathymetric surveys. The best correlation between the observed changes in lake volume, Cl
content and the measured flow rate of Soap Pool was obtained by a box-model for the Cl mass balance. Based on a trend in the Cl
content of the Soap Pool water a model of a “buried” initial crater lake is proposed
Anomalous pressure effect on the magnetic ordering in multiferroic BiMnO3
We report the magnetic field dependent dc magnetization and the
pressure-dependent (pmax ~ 16 kbar) ac susceptibilities Xp(T) on both powder
and bulk multiferroic BiMnO3 samples, synthesized in different batches under
high pressure. A clear ferromagnetic (FM) transition is observed at TC ~ 100 K,
and increases with magnetic field. The magnetic hysteresis behavior is similar
to that of a soft ferromagnet. Ac susceptibility data indicate that both the FM
peak and its temperature (TC) decrease simultaneously with increasing pressure.
Interestingly, above a certain pressure (9 ~ 11 kbar), another peak appears at
Tp ~ 93 K, which also decreases with increasing pressure, with both these peaks
persisting over some intermediate pressure range (9 ~ 13 kbar). The FM peak
disappears with further application of pressure; however, the second peak
survives until present pressure limit (pmax ~ 16 kbar). These features are
considered to originate from the complex interplay of the magnetic and orbital
structure of BiMnO3 being affected by pressure.Comment: 4 pages,4 figures, publised in Physical Review B 78, 092404/200
Біологічна активність препаратів на основі гумінових речовин у печінці піщанок (Meriones unguiculatus)
One important reason for non-use of medicinal drugs is their hepatotoxicity. The search for new natural biologically active substances with hepatoprotective properties and which are cost-effective is an important task today. This article presents the data on the impact of the fodder-dietary supplement Humilid alone and in combination with ascorbic acid, and Eco-Impulse on the liver of Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus Milne-Edwards, 1867). Hepatomodulation of properties of humic substances in the Humilid confirmed that stimulation of the activity of the enzyme transaminase increases the total amount of protein, especially in combination with ascorbic acid. There was inhibition of accumulation of oxidized products in the cell due to activation of catalase and superoxidedismutase. Intensification of catalase is regarded as one of the important mechanisms of adaptation of the cell under the influence of xenobiotics. Addition of ascorbic acid to the solution Humilid increased the antioxidant action of its active ingredients both through its own antioxidant properties and protection of humic acids from oxidation. Formation of response in liver cells of gerbils receiving active ingredients of the drug Eco-Impulse was accompanied by an increase in the number of TBA-active products and cytochrome C, which indicates the development of oxidative stress, which is accompanied by increased permeability of mitochondrial membranes. The results indicate the hepatoprotective properties of the active ingredients of the drug Humilid, alone and in combination with ascorbic acid, and the need for correcting the concentration of the drug Eco-Impulse for use in clinical practice. Додавання до розчину Гуміліду аскорбінової кислоти посилювало антиоксидантну дію його діючих речовин, завдяки як власним антиоксидантним властивостям, так і захисту гумінових кислот від окиснення. Characterization of Single-Shot Attosecond Pulses with Angular Streaking Photoelectron Spectra
Most of the traditional attosecond pulse retrieval algorithms are based on a so-called attosecond streak camera technique, in which the momentum of the electron is shifted by an amount depending on the relative time delay between the attosecond pulse and the streaking infrared pulse. Thus, temporal information of the attosecond pulse is encoded in the amount of momentum shift in the streaked photoelectron momentum spectrogram S(p, τ), where p is the momentum of the electron along the polarization direction and τ is the time delay. An iterative algorithm is then employed to reconstruct the attosecond pulse from the streaking spectrogram. This method, however, cannot be applied to attosecond pulses generated from free-electron x-ray lasers where each single shot is different and stochastic in time. However, using a circularly polarized infrared laser as the streaking field, a two (or three)-dimensional angular streaking electron spectrum can be used to retrieve attosecond pulses for each shot, as well as the time delay with respect to the circularly polarized IR field. Here we show that a retrieval algorithm previously developed for the traditional streaking spectrogram can be modified to efficiently characterize single-shot attosecond pulses. The methods have been applied to retrieve 188 single shots from recent experiments. We analyze the statistical behavior of these 188 pulses in terms of pulse duration, bandwidth, pulse peak energy, and time delay with respect to the IR field. The retrieval algorithm is efficient and can be easily used to characterize a large number of shots in future experiments for attosecond pulses at free-electron x-ray laser facilities

Measuring Binding of Protein to Gel-Bound Ligands Using Magnetic Levitation
This paper describes the use of magnetic levitation (MagLev) to measure the association of proteins and ligands. The method starts with diamagnetic gel beads that are functionalized covalently with small molecules (putative ligands). Binding of protein to the ligands within the bead causes a change in the density of the bead. When these beads are suspended in a paramagnetic aqueous buffer and placed between the poles of two NbFeB magnets with like poles facing, the changes in the density of the bead on binding of protein result in changes in the levitation height of the bead that can be used to quantify the amount of protein bound. This paper uses a reaction–diffusion model to examine the physical principles that determine the values of rate and equilibrium constants measured by this system, using the well-defined model system of carbonic anhydrase and aryl sulfonamides. By tuning the experimental protocol, the method is capable of quantifying either the concentration of protein in a solution, or the binding affinities of a protein to several resin-bound small molecules simultaneously. Since this method requires no electricity and only a single piece of inexpensive equipment, it may find use in situations where portability and low cost are important, such as in bioanalysis in resource-limited settings, point-of-care diagnosis, veterinary medicine, and plant pathology. It still has several practical disadvantages. Most notably, the method requires relatively long assay times and cannot be applied to large proteins (>70 kDa), including antibodies. The design and synthesis of beads with improved characteristics (e.g., larger pore size) has the potential to resolve these problems.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
Giant posterior fossa mature teratoma with adjacent subacute haematoma, compressive on the brainstem, with acute hydrocephalus: Case report
Mature teratoma of the vermis is a rare entity in neurosurgical adulthood pathology. We present the case of a 65 years old patient, admited as an emergency for intense headache (VAS 8/10), nausea, vomiting, gait ataxia, orizontal nistagmus, dismetria, disdiadocokinezia, predominant on the left side, long tracts signs, predominant on the left side. Native and contrast CT and MRI scan of the head revealed a tumoral lesion, in the vermian, paravermian and in the fourth ventricle, with the aspect of a teratoma with intratumoral subacute haemorrhage including a giant lesion 5,5/5/4,5 cm, compressive on mesencephalon, and with suprajacent acute internal hidrocephalus. Emergency neurosurgery was performed (occipital infratentorial craniectomy, microneurosurgical total tumoral resection and haematoma evacuation). Postoperative, the patient recovered progressivelly , subtotal neo and arhicerebellar symptoms. The motor long tract signs recovered slower and persisted incomplete.
