Multi-qubit compensation sequences
The Hamiltonian control of n qubits requires precision control of both the
strength and timing of interactions. Compensation pulses relax the precision
requirements by reducing unknown but systematic errors. Using composite pulse
techniques designed for single qubits, we show that systematic errors for n
qubit systems can be corrected to arbitrary accuracy given either two
non-commuting control Hamiltonians with identical systematic errors or one
error-free control Hamiltonian. We also examine composite pulses in the context
of quantum computers controlled by two-qubit interactions. For quantum
computers based on the XY interaction, single-qubit composite pulse sequences
naturally correct systematic errors. For quantum computers based on the
Heisenberg or exchange interaction, the composite pulse sequences reduce the
logical single-qubit gate errors but increase the errors for logical two-qubit

Mid-infrared spectra of late-type stars: Long-term evolution
Recent ground-based mid-infrared spectra of 29 late-type stars, most with
substantial dust shells, are compared to ground-based spectra of these stars
from the 1960s and 1970s and to IRAS-LRS spectra obtained in 1983. The spectra
of about half the stars show no detectable changes, implying that their
distributions of circumstellar material and associated dust grain properties
have changed little over this time interval. However, many of the stars with
strong silicate features showed marked changes. In nearly all cases the
silicate peak has strengthened with respect to the underlying continuum,
although there is one case (VY~CMa) in which the silicate feature has almost
completely disappeared. This suggests that, in general, an oxygen-rich star
experiences long periods of gradual silicate feature strengthening, punctuated
by relatively rare periods when the feature weakens. We discuss various
mechanisms for producing the changes, favoring the slow evolution of the
intrinsic dust properties (i.e., the chemical composition or grain structure).
Although most IRAS spectra agree well with ground-based spectra, there are a
number of cases where they fall well outside the expected range of uncertainty.
In almost all such cases the slopes of the red and blue LRS spectra do not

Construction of Parseval wavelets from redundant filter systems
We consider wavelets in L^2(R^d) which have generalized multiresolutions.
This means that the initial resolution subspace V_0 in L^2(R^d) is not singly
generated. As a result, the representation of the integer lattice Z^d
restricted to V_0 has a nontrivial multiplicity function. We show how the
corresponding analysis and synthesis for these wavelets can be understood in
terms of unitary-matrix-valued functions on a torus acting on a certain vector
bundle. Specifically, we show how the wavelet functions on R^d can be

The chromosphere: gateway to the corona, or the purgatory of solar physics?
I argue that one should attempt to understand the solar chromosphere not only
for its own sake, but also if one is interested in the physics of: the corona;
astrophysical dynamos; space weather; partially ionized plasmas; heliospheric
UV radiation; the transition region. I outline curious observations which I

Sensitivity Analysis of Hybrid Propulsion Transportation System for Human Mars Expeditions
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration continues to develop and refine various transportation options to successfully field a human Mars campaign. One of these transportation options is the Hybrid Transportation System which utilizes both solar electric propulsion and chemical propulsion. The Hybrid propulsion system utilizes chemical propulsion to perform high thrust maneuvers, where the delta-V is most optimal when ap- plied to save time and to leverage the Oberth effect. It then utilizes solar electric propulsion to augment the chemical burns throughout the interplanetary trajectory. This eliminates the need for the development of two separate vehicles for crew and cargo missions. Previous studies considered single point designs of the architecture, with fixed payload mass and propulsion system performance parameters. As the architecture matures, it is inevitable that the payload mass and the performance of the propulsion system will change. It is desirable to understand how these changes will impact the in-space transportation system's mass and power requirements. This study presents an in-depth sensitivity analysis of the Hybrid crew transportation system to payload mass growth and solar electric propulsion performance. This analysis is used to identify the breakpoints of the current architecture and to inform future architecture and campaign design decisions
Diets high in selenium and isoflavones decrease androgen-regulated gene expression in healthy rat dorsolateral prostate
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>High dietary intake of selenium or soybean isoflavones reduces prostate cancer risk. These components each affect androgen-regulated gene expression. The objective of this work was to determine the combined effects of selenium and isoflavones on androgen-regulated gene expression in rat prostate.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Male Noble rats were exposed from conception until 200 days of age to diets containing an adequate (0.33-0.45 mg/kg diet) or high (3.33-3.45 mg/kg) concentration of selenium as Se-methylselenocysteine and a low (10 mg/kg) or high (600 mg/kg) level of isoflavones in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Gene expression in the dorsolateral prostate was determined for the androgen receptor, for androgen-regulated genes, and for Akr1c9, whose product catalyzes the reduction of dihydrotestosterone to 5alpha-androstane-3alpha, 17beta-diol. Activity of hepatic glutathione peroxidise 1 and of prostatic 5alpha reductase were also assayed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no differences due to diet in activity of liver glutathione peroxidase activity. Total activity of 5alpha reductase in prostate was significantly lower (<it>p </it>= 0.007) in rats fed high selenium/high isoflavones than in rats consuming adequate selenium/low isoflavones. High selenium intake reduced expression of the androgen receptor, Dhcr24 (24-dehydrocholesterol reductase), and Abcc4 (ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member 4). High isoflavone intake decreased expression of Facl3 (fatty acid CoA ligase 3), Gucy1a3 (guanylate cyclase alpha 3), and Akr1c9. For Abcc4 the combination of high selenium/high isoflavones had a greater inhibitory effect than either treatment alone. The effects of selenium on gene expression were always in the direction of chemoprevention</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggest that combined intake of high selenium and high isoflavones may achieve a greater chemopreventive effect than either compound supplemented individually.</p
