    Evaluation of awareness about obesity among general public visiting the tertiary care hospital

    Background: Obesity is one of the fastest growing threats of health and well-being for both developed and developing countries. The aim of the study was to evaluate the awareness about obesity among general public.Methods: After obtaining institutional ethics committee approval and written informed consent from the participants, anthropometric measures like height, weight, hip and waist circumference for computing body mass index and waist hip ratio were taken. Using portable bioelectric impedance analyzer body fat percentage was measured. A validated questionnaire including socio demographic details and questions evaluating the awareness about obesity were given to the participants.Results: Totally 100 participants were evaluated, of which majority being female. Mean height of the male and female participants was 164 and 152cm respectively. Similarly, mean weight was found to be 72 and 65 kg. Based on the body mass index only 19% participants were within normal range, remaining 81% were overweight and obese. Percent body fat and waist hip ratio was found to be increased in both sexes. Majority of the participants were aware that obesity is associated with health problems but most of them were unaware how it is measured and the dietary foods to be taken to reduce obesity. However 64% participants think that obesity can reduce the life expectancy of the individual.Conclusions: Majority of the participants were obese and overweight while awareness about preventive measures was still lacking. Hence health care personnel need to take greater effort to educate and inform people about the implications

    Formation of robust and completely tunable resonant photonic band gaps

    We identify different types of the photonic band gaps (PBGs) of two dimensional magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) consisting of arrays of magnetic cylinders and study the different tunability (by an external static magnetic field) of these PBGs. One type of the band gaps comes from infinitely degenerate flat bands and is closely related to those in the study of plasmonics. In addition, such PBGs are magnetically tunable and robust against position disorder. We calcualte the transmission of the PBG's and found excellent agreement with the results of the photonic band structure calculation. Positional disorder of the lattice structure affects the different types of PBGs differently.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    The study of ultrasonic welding has been going on for more than 50 years. The mechanism of joint formation and characterization of the interface in ultrasonically made joints between metal sheets and wires have been the most thought-provoking area for the researchers. The study of post-welding microstructure, the formation of any intermetallic compound at the interface and their effect on the joint strength, the presence of heat affected zone in the ultrasonically joined sheets has been explored but still, arguably the least understood. Interface characteristics are different in similar and dissimilar combinations of metals. This work presents a comprehensive review of literature regarding the studies on the microstructural analysis at the interface of the joints made by Ultrasonic Welding on different combinations of metal sheets. Additionally, this paper provides an analysis of the observations made by different scientists that promote the future scope of research in this area.     Comparative Study of Iron Supplements in South Indian Antenatal Women with Iron Deficiency Anemia

    BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional disorder in the world. It is a major public health problem particularly among pregnant women with adverse effects on the mother and the new born. Iron supplementation is universally recommended to correct or prevent iron deficiency. AIMS & OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to compare the efficacy and tolerability of three oral iron preparations in anemic pregnant women of more than 14 weeks of gestation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Randomized Control trial, done at Tagore Medical College and Hospital, Chennai. 60 antenatal women were selected; they were divided into three groups, 20 in each group. They were treated with Carbonyl iron, ferrous sulphate and ferrous fumarate. Hemoglobin estimation was done at 0 day, 30th and 60th day. Adverse effects were monitored. RESULTS: Data analysis showed an increase in haemoglobin levels in all three groups after the 30th day (p<0.05). Carbonyl iron showed highly significant increase (p<0.05) in the haemoglobin level as compared to the other two drugs at the end of the 60th day. CONCLUSION: Carbonyl iron is superior in efficacy when compared to ferrous sulphate and ferrous fumarate and is better tolerated. So carbonyl iron is safe in pregnancy and can be given as a supplement to treat iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy

    Analgesic activity of Cissus quadrangularis linn with Zingiber officinale rosc in male wistar rats

    Background: The global scenario, human beings are using various forms of treatment for relief of pain; among them, medicinal plant products have gained popularity because of its wide range of use and less side effects.Methods: Adult Albino rats of either sex were selected and divided into 5 groups. The Eddy’s hot plate was used and maintained temperature (55±0.5ºC), the animals were placed on the hot plate and the time taken for paw licking or jumping was recorded and considered as nociceptive response. The reaction time was observed on 0, 30, 60, and 90 minute.Results: The hot plate reaction time in sec was collected in the intervals of 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes in all groups. Reaction times as follows: group III (Cissus quadrangularis Linn.) were 2.18±0.04, 3.13±0.05**, 5.83±0.05**, 5.39±0.04**;  Group IV (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) were 2.12±0.03, 4.13±0.04**, 7.43±0.07**, 7.16±0.06**; Group V Cissus quadrangularis Linn+ Zingiber officinale Rosc.) were 2.21±0.75, 4.67±0.98**, 8.15±0.89**, 9.02±0.75**; Group II (Dexamethasone) were 2.14±0.05, 5.53±0.05**, 8.14±0.06**, 10.08±0.10** respectively, Results are presented as mean±SEM, (n=6), *p<0.01, **p<0.05 dunnet test used as compared to control.Conclusions: Present study reveals that, the combination treatment of Zingiber officinale Rosc. + Cissus quadrangularis Linn. has been shown significant analgesic effect. High analgesic effect was observed with combination therapy; the effect was shown same as standard drug dexamethasone

    Growth, mortality and stock assessment of Arius arius (Hamilton, 1822) from Hooghly-Matlah estuary, West Bengal

    302-309The growth, mortality, and stock assessment of Arius arius were estimated based on monthly length-frequency analysis data collected from the Hooghly-Matlah estuary of West Bengal, India from April 2017 to March 2018. The estimated growth parameters were as L∞ = 278 mm, K = 0.97 yr-1, and t0 = -0.0889 years. The different mortality coefficients Z, M, and F were obtained as 5.25 yr-1, 1.79 yr-1, and 3.46 yr-1, respectively. The calculated exploitation ratio (E) was found as 0.66, and the M/K value as 1.845 indicating overexploitation of the fish. The recruitment was found throughout the year with two peaks and the value of Lc was found at 56.00 mm. The estimated virtual population analysis (VPA) indicated that the highest fishing mortality (F) of 3.4499 was observed at the 190-200 mm length class, followed by 3.2393 from the 180-190 mm length class. The fishery was found at the overexploitation level and measures are needed to regulate it for promoting its sustainability

    Relationship between otolith morphometry and fish size of Otolithoides pama (Hamilton, 1822) from Hooghly-Matlah estuary, India

    1636-1642The correlation between sagitta otolith morphometry (length, weight, and breadth) and weight of Otolithoides pama (Hamilton, 1822) occurring in the Hooghly-Matlah estuary of West Bengal was examined for one year (February 2017 to January 2018). The sagitta otoliths were extracted, cleaned, photographed, and measured. Otolith length, weight, and breadth were recorded for each pair of sagittae. The length and weight of the fish sample, as well as those of otoliths, ranged from 51 to 327 mm, 1.1 to 270 g, 2.0 to 13.9 mm, and 0.0085 to 0.756 g, respectively. A linear relationship existed between the length and weight of otolith with the length of fish. The relationship between total fish length (TL) and otolith length (OL) was recorded as TL = 0.038 (OL) + 0.123 (R2 = 0.799), that of total fish length (TL) and otolith weight (OW) being TL = 0.025 (OW) - 0.221 (R2 = 0.887), that of total fish length (TL) and otolith breadth being TL = 0.031 (OB) + 0.089 (R2 = 0.781). The morphometric relationships indicated that length, weight, and breadth of otolith exhibited a high correlation with the total length of fish

    Immunogenicity of vaccination against influenza, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae type B in patients with multiple myeloma

    Vaccination against influenza and Streptococcus pneumoniae is recommended for elderly and immunocompromised individuals. However, there is little information concerning the efficacy of vaccination in specific groups of patients. In this study, 52 patients underwent vaccination against influenza, S. pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) as they attended hospital outpatient clinics. Serum was analysed prior to vaccination and 4–6 weeks afterwards. Antibody titres against S. pneumoniae and Hib were compared with reference values corresponding to the geometric mean titres of a healthy UK population. For influenza vaccination, haemagglutination inhibition (HI) titres were measured against three inactivated strains; a titre of ≥ 1/40 was considered protective. No patient had protective titres to all three antigens prior to vaccination and 41 patients (85%) had titres < 1/40 to all 3 strains. Post vaccination only 9/48 patients (19%) achieved protective antibody titres. Resistance to S. pneumoniae and response to Pneumovax II was also poor: prevaccination, 45 patients (93%) had suboptimal antibody titres and in 26/43 patients (61%) titres remained low post vaccination. Resistance to Hib and response to vaccination was comparable with the healthy adult UK population. These results question the practice of routine influenza and pneumococcal vaccination in myeloma patients. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
