An Auction Market for Journal Articles

    Get PDF
Economic articles are published very slowly. We believe this results mainly from the poor incentives referees face. We recommend that an auction market replace the current system for submitting papers and demonstrate a strict Pareto-improvement of equilibrium. Besides the benefits of speed, this mechanism increases the average quality of articles and journals and rewards editors and referees for their effort. In addition, the "academic dollars" for papers sold at auction go to the authors, editors and referees of cited articles. This income indicates academic productivity (facilitating decisions on tenure and promotion); its recirculation to journals further stimulates quality competition.Academic Journals;Academic Productivity;Market Design. An Auction Market for Journal Articles

Economic articles are published very slowly. We believe this results from the poor incentives referees face. We recommend that an auction market replace the current, push system for submitting papers and demonstrate that our proposed market has a stable, Pareto-improving equilibrium. Besides the benefits of speed, this pull mechanism increases the quality of articles and journals and rewards referees for their effort. Although the auction price gives a prior on a paper's future value, its actual value|as a published article|depends on later citations. Since the auction price of later papers goes to the editors, authors and referees of earlier, cited articles, "auction earnings" give a direct measure of the value of articles, journals (the sum of articles) and academics - as authors, editors and reviewers - rewarding good writing, decisions and effort, respectively.Academic Journals;Academic Productivity;Market Design.

    Praziquantel in clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis

A single stool examination revealed pathogenic intestinal parasites in 462 (58%) of 796 vietnamese and cambodian refugees. 56 (7.0%) were infected with Clonorchis sinensis and/or Opisthorchis viverrini. These patients received Praziquantel in a dosage of 20 mg/kg bwt. p.day on 3 consecutive days. Parasitological controls were completed after 12 months. No further excretion of eggs could be detected in 88% of the patients. Concurrent infections with other trematodes and cestodes were also cured. Nematode infections remained uninfluenced. No change of haematological and biochemical parameters could be observed during therapy. Diarrhea and epigastric pain were common side effects, which are probably not effects of the drug itself. They rather seem to be due to the release of parasitic antigens. This is also indicated by a further increase of circulating Ig E after therapy

    Komplizierte Malaria tropica

Intraspecific diversity of the rhizodeposition of Lupinus angustifolius L. regarding the phosphorus mobilization in the soil

The cropping of lupines (Lupinus spp.) for protein production is rising worldwide. The growth of lupines is often limited by P deficiency, caused by low P bioavailability in soils. The rhizodeposition is a leading control of the P mobilization in the soil, i.e. especially by the release of phosphatases and organic acids. In the present study 20 genotypes of L. angustifolius (19 accessions from different geographic origins and the cultivar Boruta) were tested on their molecular-chemical composition of the rhizodeposition in P-deficiency by pyrolysis-field ionisation mass spectrometry (Py-FIMS) and on the phosphatase and ß-glucosidase activities in the rhizosphere soil. The intraspecific diversity of the composition of the rhizodeposits was especially large for the relative abundance of carbohydrates and in this way in a specific impact on the microbial activity in the rhizosphere by selective promotion under some genotypes by easily available C sources for the microbial rhizosphere community. This was confirmed by a large variation in the thermal stability of the rhizodeposits of different genotypes, a varying pH level in identical cultivation conditions and in varying activities of alkaline and acid phosphomonoesterases and ß-glucosidase in the rhizosphere. Furthermore, the data revealed a strong variation in the release of alkaloids into the rhizosphere during the growth with a further impact on the microbial activity. In conclusion, the use of the quality of the rhizodeposition as an indicator of the potential for P mobilization in P-deficient soils highlighted a broad intraspecific diversity within L. angustifolius. This is a promising basis for a selection of highly P efficient genotypes within this species for further breeding strategies of productive cultivars
