    Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy of a Semiconductor Microcavity

    Rephasing and non-rephasing two-dimensional coherent spectra map the anti-crossing associated with normal-mode splitting in a semiconductor microcavity. For a 12-meV detuning range near zero detuning, it is observed that there are two diagonal features related to the intra-action of exciton-polariton branches and two off-diagonal features related to coherent interaction between the polaritons. At negative detuning, the lineshape properties of the diagonal intra-action features are distinguishable and can be associated with cavity-like and exciton-like modes. A biexcitonic companion feature is observed, shifted from the exciton feature by the biexciton binding energy. Closer to zero detuning, all features are enhanced and the diagonal intra-action features become nearly equal in amplitude and linewidth. At positive detuning the exciton- and cavity-like characteristics return to the diagonal intra-action features. Off-diagonal interaction features exhibit asymmetry in their amplitudes throughout the detuning range. The amplitudes are strongly modulated (and invert) at small positive detuning, as the lower polariton branch crosses the bound biexciton energy determined from negative detuning spectra.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Field control of anisotropic spin transport and spin helix dynamics in a modulation-doped GaAs quantum well

    Electron spin transport and dynamics are investigated in a single, high-mobility, modulation-doped, GaAs quantum well using ultrafast two-color Kerr-rotation microspectroscopy, supported by qualitative kinetic theory simulations of spin diffusion and transport. Evolution of the spins is governed by the Dresselhaus bulk and Rashba structural inversion asymmetries, which manifest as an effective magnetic field that can be extracted directly from the experimental coherent spin precession. A spin-precession length Ī»[subscript SOI] is defined as one complete precession in the effective magnetic field. It is observed that application of (i) an out-of-plane electric field changes the spin decay time and Ī»[subscript SOI] through the Rashba component of the spin-orbit coupling, (ii) an in-plane magnetic field allows for extraction of the Dresselhaus and Rashba parameters, and (iii) an in-plane electric field markedly modifies both the Ī»[subscript SOI] and diffusion coefficient

The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this recordSir William Temple, an English statesman and humanist, wrote ā€œUpon the Gardens of Epicurusā€ in 1685, taking a neo-epicurean approach to happiness and temperance. In accord with Pierre Gassendiā€™s epicureanism, ā€œhappinessā€ is characterised as freedom from disturbance and pain in mind and body, whereas ā€œtemperanceā€ means following nature (Providence and oneā€™s physiopsychological constitution). For Temple, cultivating fruit trees in his garden was analogous to the threefold cultivation of temperance as a virtue in the humoral body (as food), the mind (as freedom from the passions), and the bodyeconomic (as circulating goods) in order to attain happiness. A regimen that was supposed to cure the malaise of Restoration amidst a crisis of unbridled passions, this threefold cultivation of temperance underlines Templeā€™s reception of China and Confucianism wherein happiness and temperance are highlighted.     Effect of Reynolds number on five-hole probe performance: experimental study of the open-access Oxford probe

    There is relatively little literature concerning the effect of Reynolds number on multi-hole aerodynamic probe performance. In particular, there is almost no discussion in the literature regarding the underlying mechanisms of Reynolds number (Re) sensitivity for such probes. In order to close this gap, detailed investigations of the effect of Re on a five-hole probe have been performed using both particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques and oil flow visualizations. Wind- and water-tunnels were used to cover a wide range of Re. The open-access Oxford Probe was used for these studies because of the readily available data-sets and processing routines and to allow future comparisons by other authors. Complex flow dynamics including flow separation and re-attachment were identified, which cause Re-sensitivity of the calibration map at low Re even for low yaw or pitch angles. By comparing calibration maps across a wide range of Re, we demonstrate that the Oxford Probe can be employed without much loss of accuracy at lower Re levels than initially (conservatively) suggested, and quantify the errors in the extreme low-Re regime. Overall, we demonstrate the robustness of the Oxford Probe concept across a wide range of Re conditions, we more clearly defined the low-Re limit for the probe design and quantify errors below this limit, and we illustrate the fundamental mechanisms for Re-sensitivity of multi-hole probes
