Computing Star Discrepancies with Numerical Black-Box Optimization Algorithms
The star discrepancy is a measure for the regularity of a finite
set of points taken from . Low discrepancy point sets are highly
relevant for Quasi-Monte Carlo methods in numerical integration and several
other applications. Unfortunately, computing the star discrepancy
of a given point set is known to be a hard problem, with the best exact
algorithms falling short for even moderate dimensions around 8. However,
despite the difficulty of finding the global maximum that defines the
star discrepancy of the set, local evaluations at selected points
are inexpensive. This makes the problem tractable by black-box optimization
approaches.
In this work we compare 8 popular numerical black-box optimization algorithms
on the star discrepancy computation problem, using a wide set of
instances in dimensions 2 to 15. We show that all used optimizers perform very
badly on a large majority of the instances and that in many cases random search
outperforms even the more sophisticated solvers. We suspect that
state-of-the-art numerical black-box optimization techniques fail to capture
the global structure of the problem, an important shortcoming that may guide
their future development.
We also provide a parallel implementation of the best-known algorithm to
compute the discrepancy.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of GECCO 202
Tuning as a means of assessing the benefits of new ideas in interplay with existing algorithmic modules
Introducing new algorithmic ideas is a key part of the continuous improvement of existing optimization algorithms. However, when introducing a new component into an existing algorithm, assessing its potential benefits is a challenging task. Often, the component is added to a default implementation of the underlying algorithm and compared against a limited set of other variants. This assessment ignores any potential interplay with other algorithmic ideas that share the same base algorithm, which is critical in understanding the exact contributions being made. We explore a more extensive procedure, which uses hyperparameter tuning as a means of assessing the benefits of new algorithmic components. This allows for a more robust analysis by not only focusing on the impact on performance, but also by investigating how this performance is achieved. We implement our suggestion in the context of the Modular CMA-ES framework, which was redesigned and extended to include some new modules and several new options for existing modules, mostly focused on the step-size adaptation method. Our analysis highlights the differences between these new modules, and identifies the situations in which they have the largest contribution.Algorithms and the Foundations of Software technolog

Triangulation network of 1929-1944 of the first 1:500 urban map of València
[EN] Triangulation is a surveying method on which earlier maps made were based. Although the origins
of the method can be traced back to the 16th century, it is still used today, with minor changes, to
adjust networks observed with modern geodetic techniques. In this paper we present the geodetic
survey work that was carried out for the primary triangulation network of the first 1:500 urban map of
the city of València (Spain). It spanned from 1929 to 1944 and resulted in 421 maps covering about
174 square kilometres. We focus on four key elements to define the geometric framework of a map:
(1) the geodetic network, (2) the cartographic projection, (3) the baseline measurements, and (4)
the primary triangulation. The paper is based on the interpretation of original documents and
field books recovered from the archives of the València City Council. In order to check the
accuracy and consistency of the survey work, we recomputed all calculations directly from the
field data, following the mathematical procedures of the time. We obtained a set of
transformation parameters to convert the coordinates of 1929 to current coordinates based on
the European Terrestrial Reference System of 1989 (ETRS89). Results showed that the 1929
primary triangulation angles and coordinates are accurate to 8 s of arc and 35 cm respectively,
and that the coordinates transform well into the current reference system with average residuals
of 26 cm across nine control points, demonstrating the high quality of the 1929 work.Villar-Cano, M.; Marqués-Mateu, Á.; Jiménez-Martínez, MJ. (2020). Associations of plasma fibrinogen assays, C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 with previous myocardial infarction
Background: The association of plasma fibrinogen with myocardial infarction (MI) may (like that of C-reactive protein, CRP) be a marker of subclinical inflammation, mediated by cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6). There are well- recognized discrepancies between commonly performed fibrinogen assays. Increased ratio of clottable fibrinogen to intact fibrinogen (measured by a recently developed immunoassay) has been proposed as a measure of hyperfunctional fibrinogen, and is elevated in acute MI.<br/> Objective: To compare the associations of intact fibrinogen and four routine fibrinogen assays (two von Clauss assays; one prothrombin-time derived; and one immunonephelometric) in a case-control study of previous MI. Patients/methods: Cases (n = 399) were recruited 3-9 months after their event; 413 controls were age- and sex-matched from the case-control study local population. Intact fibrinogen was measured in 50% of subjects. Results: All routine fibrinogen assays showed high intercorrelations (r = 0.82-0.93) and significant (P lt 0.0001) increased mean levels in cases vs. controls. These four routine assays correlated only moderately with intact fibrinogen (r = 0.45-0.62), while intact fibrinogen showed only a small, nonsignificant increase in cases vs. controls. Consequently, the ratio of each of the four routine assays to the intact fibrinogen assay was significantly higher (P lt 0.0003) in cases vs. controls. Each fibrinogen assay correlated with plasma levels of CRP and IL-6 (which were also elevated in cases vs. controls). Each routine fibrinogen assay remained significantly elevated in cases vs. controls after further adjustment for C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. Conclusions: These data provide evidence for acquired, increased hyperfunctional plasma fibrinogen in MI survivors, which is not associated with markers of inflammatory reactions. The causes and significance of these results remain to be established in prospective studies
Thermosensitivity of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae gpp1gpp2 double deletion strain can be reduced by overexpression of genes involved in cell wall maintenance
A Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain in which the GPP1 and GPP2 genes, both encoding glycerol-3-phosphate phosphatase isoforms, are deleted, displays both osmo- and thermosensitive (ts) phenotypes. We isolated genes involved in cell wall maintenance as multicopy suppressors of the gpp1gpp2 ts phenotype. We found that the gpp1gpp2 strain is hypersensitive to cell wall stress such as treatment with β-1,3-glucanase containing cocktail Zymolyase and chitin-binding dye Calcofluor-white (CFW). Sensitivity to Zymolyase was rescued by overexpression of SSD1, while CFW sensitivity was rescued by SSD1, FLO8 and WSC3-genes isolated as multicopy suppressors of the gpp1gpp2 ts phenotype. Some of the isolated suppressor genes (SSD1, FLO8) also rescued the lytic phenotype of slt2 deletion strain. Additionally, the sensitivity to CFW was reduced when the cells were supplied with glycerol. Both growth on glycerol-based medium and overexpression of SSD1, FLO8 or WSC3 had additive suppressing effect on CFW sensitivity of the gpp1gpp2 mutant strain. We also confirmed that the internal glycerol level changed in cells exposed to cell wall perturbation. © 2007 Springer-Verlag
pH regulation in anoxic rice coleoptiles at pH 3.5: biochemical pHstats and net H+ influx in the absence and presence of NO3−
During anoxia, cytoplasmic pH regulation is crucial. Mechanisms of pH regulation were studied in the coleoptile of rice exposed to anoxia and pH 3.5, resulting in H+ influx. Germinating rice seedlings survived a combination of anoxia and exposure to pH 3.5 for at least 4 d, although development was retarded and net K+ efflux was continuous. Further experiments used excised coleoptile tips (7–10 mm) in anoxia at pH 6.5 or 3.5, either without or with 0.2 mM NO3−, which distinguished two processes involved in pH regulation. Net H+ influx (μmol g−1 fresh weight h−1) for coleoptiles with NO3− was ∼1.55 over the first 24 h, being about twice that in the absence of NO3−, but then decreased to 0.5–0.9 as net NO3− uptake declined from ∼1.3 to 0.5, indicating reduced uptake via H+–NO3− symports. NO3− reduction presumably functioned as a biochemical pHstat. A second biochemical pHstat consisted of malate and succinate, and their concentrations decreased substantially with time after exposure to pH 3.5. In anoxic coleoptiles, K+ balancing the organic anions was effluxed to the medium as organic anions declined, and this efflux rate was independent of NO3− supply. Thus, biochemical pHstats and reduced net H+ influx across the plasma membrane are important features contributing to pH regulation in anoxia-tolerant rice coleoptiles at pH 3.5
