Radio-Continuum study of the Nearby Sculptor Group Galaxies. Part 1: NGC 300 at lambda = 20 cm
A series of new radio-continuum (lambda=20 cm) mosaic images focused on the
NGC 300 galactic system were produced using archived observational data from
the VLA and/or ATCA. These new images are both very sensitive (rms=60 microJy)
and feature high angular resolution (<10"). The most prominent new feature is
the galaxy's extended radio-continuum emission, which does not match its
optical appearance. Using these newly created images a number of previously
unidentified discrete sources have been discovered. Furthermore, we demonstrate
that a joint deconvolution approach to imaging this complete data-set is

Spectrum of elementary and collective excitations in the dimerized S=1/2 Heisenberg chain with frustration
We have studied the low-energy excitation spectrum of a dimerized and
frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. We use an analytic approach,
based on a description of the excitations as triplets above a strong-coupling
singlet ground state. The quasiparticle spectrum is calculated by treating the
excitations as a dilute Bose gas with infinite on-site repulsion. Additional
singlet (S=0) and triplet (S=1) modes are found as two-particle bound states of
the elementary triplets. We have also calculated the contributions of the
elementary and collective excitations into the spin structure factor. Our
results are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalizations and dimer series
expansions data as long as the dimerization parameter is not too small
(), i.e. while the elementary triplets can be treated as localized

Radio-Continuum Study of the Nearby Sculptor Group Galaxies. Part 2: NGC 55 at {\lambda}=20, 13, 6 and 3 cm
A series of new radio-continuum ({\lambda}=20, 13, 6 and 3 cm) mosaic images
focused on the NGC55 galactic system were produced using archived observational
data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array. These new images are both very
sensitive (down to rms=33 {\mu}Jy) and feature high angular resolution (down to
<4"). Using these newly created images, 66 previously unidentified discrete
sources are identified. Of these sources, 46 were classified as background
sources, 11 as HII regions and 6 as supernova remnant candidates. This
relatively low number of SNR candidates detected coupled with the low number of
large HII regions is consistent with the estimated low star formation rate of
the galaxy at 0.06 solar masses per year. Our spectral index map shows that the
core of galaxy appears to have a shallow spectral index between {\alpha} = -0.2
and -0.4. This indicates that the core of the galaxy is a region of high

Magnetic Excitations in quasi two-dimensional Spin-Peierls Systems
A study is presented of a two-dimensional frustrated and dimerized quantum
spin-system which models the effect of inter-chain coupling in a spin-Peierls
compound. Employing a bond-boson method to account for quantum disorder in the
ground state the elementary excitations are evaluated in terms of gapful
triplet modes. Results for the ground state energy and the spin gap are
discussed. The triplet dispersion is found to be in excellent agreement with
inelastic neutron scattering data in the dimerized phase of the spin-Peierls
compound CuGeO_3. Moreover, consistent with these neutron scattering
experiments, the low-temperature dynamic structure factor exhibits a
high-energy continuum split off from the elementary triplet mode.Comment: 8 pages, Revtex, 8 eps-figure
Prognosis of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer in Relation to Serum Thyrotropin and Thyroglobulin Antibody Status at Time of Diagnosis
BACKGROUND: Serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration and thyroid autoimmunity may be of prognostic importance in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Preoperative serum TSH level has been associated with higher DTC stage in cross-sectional studies; data are contradictory on the significance of thyroid autoimmunity at the time of diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess whether preoperative serum TSH and perioperative antithyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) were associated with thyroid cancer stage and outcome in DTC patients followed by the National Thyroid Cancer Treatment Cooperative Study, a large multicenter thyroid cancer registry.
METHODS: Patients registered after 1996 with available preoperative serum TSH (n=617; the TSH cohort) or perioperative TgAb status (n=1770; the TgAb cohort) were analyzed for tumor stage, persistent disease, recurrence, and overall survival (OS; median follow-up, 5.5 years). Parametric tests assessed log-transformed TSH, and categorical variables were tested with chi square. Disease-free survival (DFS) and OS was assessed with Cox models.
RESULTS: Geometric mean serum TSH levels were higher in patients with higher-stage disease (Stage III/IV=1.48 vs. 1.02 mU/L for Stages I/II; p=0.006). The relationship persisted in those aged ≥45 years after adjusting for sex (p=0.01). Gross extrathyroidal extension (p=0.03) and presence of cervical lymph node metastases (p=0.003) were also significantly associated with higher serum TSH. Disease recurrence and all-cause mortality occurred in 37 and 38 TSH cohort patients respectively, which limited the power for survival analysis. Positive TgAb was associated with lower stage on univariate analysis (positive TgAb in 23.4% vs. 17.8% of Stage I/II vs. III/IV patients, respectively; p=0.01), although the relationship lost significance when adjusting for age and sex (p=0.34). Perioperative TgAb was not an independent predictor of DFS (hazard ratio=1.12 [95% confidence interval=0.74-1.69]) or OS (hazard ratio=0.98 [95% confidence interval=0.56-1.72]).
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative serum TSH level is associated with higher DTC stage, gross extrathyroidal extension, and neck node metastases. Perioperative TgAb is not an independent predictor of DTC prognosis. A larger cohort is required to assess whether preoperative serum TSH level predicts recurrence or mortality
First narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves from known pulsars in advanced detector data
Spinning neutron stars asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis are potential sources of
continuous gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors. In the case of known pulsars a
fully coherent search, based on matched filtering, which uses the position and rotational parameters
obtained from electromagnetic observations, can be carried out. Matched filtering maximizes the signalto-
noise (SNR) ratio, but a large sensitivity loss is expected in case of even a very small mismatch
between the assumed and the true signal parameters. For this reason, narrow-band analysis methods have
been developed, allowing a fully coherent search for gravitational waves from known pulsars over a
fraction of a hertz and several spin-down values. In this paper we describe a narrow-band search of
11 pulsars using data from Advanced LIGO’s first observing run. Although we have found several initial
outliers, further studies show no significant evidence for the presence of a gravitational wave signal.
Finally, we have placed upper limits on the signal strain amplitude lower than the spin-down limit for 5 of
the 11 targets over the bands searched; in the case of J1813-1749 the spin-down limit has been beaten for
the first time. For an additional 3 targets, the median upper limit across the search bands is below the
spin-down limit. This is the most sensitive narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves carried
out so far
