Scale-Up, Production, and Procurement of PEP Simulants
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been tasked by Bechtel National Inc. on the River Protection Project-Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (RPP-WTP) project to perform research and development activities to resolve technical issues identified for the Pretreatment Facility. The Pretreatment Engineering Platform (PEP) was designed, constructed, and operated as part of a plan to respond to issue M12, âUndemonstrated Leaching Processes.â The PEP is a 1/4.5-scale test platform designed to simulate the WTP pretreatment caustic leaching, oxidative leaching, ultrafiltration solids concentration, and slurry washing processes. The PEP replicates the WTP leaching processes using prototypic equipment and control strategies. This report provides the lessons learned regarding the manufacture and delivery of simulated feeds for PEP testing
Properties of Be and C deduced from the folding--potential model
The -- differential cross sections are analyzed in the
optical model using a double--folded potential. With the knowledge of this
potential bound and resonance--state properties of --cluster states in
Be and C as well as astrophysical S--factors of
He(,)Be and Be(,)C are

Equilibrium data for cesium ion exchange of Hanford CC and NCAW tank waste
Hanford alkaline waste storage-tank contents will be processed to remove the soluble salts. A major fraction of these solutions will require cesium recovery to produce a low-level waste (LLW). The technology for decontamination of high-level alkaline waste and sludge wash waters is being developed. At the request of Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC), the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) has studied several ion exchange materials for the recovery of cesium from Hanford waste tanks. The WHC program was divided into tow main tasks, (1) to obtain equilibrium data for cesium ion exchange, and (2) to evaluate ion exchange column performance. The subject of this letter report is the measurement of batch distribution coefficients for several ion exchange media for a range of operating conditions for two types of waste; complexant concentrate (CC) and neutralized current acid waste (NCAW)
Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of nuclei
We report on quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ground and low-lying
excited states of nuclei using realistic Hamiltonians containing the
Argonne two-nucleon potential alone or with one of several
three-nucleon potentials, including Urbana IX and three of the new Illinois
models. The calculations begin with correlated many-body wave functions that
have an -like core and multiple p-shell nucleons, -coupled to the
appropriate quantum numbers for the state of interest. After
optimization, these variational trial functions are used as input to a Green's
function Monte Carlo calculation of the energy, using a constrained path
algorithm. We find that the Hamiltonians that include Illinois three-nucleon
potentials reproduce ten states in Li, Be, Be, and B with
an rms deviation as little as 900 keV. In particular, we obtain the correct
3 ground state for B, whereas the Argonne alone or with
Urbana IX predicts a 1 ground state. In addition, we calculate isovector
and isotensor energy differences, electromagnetic moments, and one- and
two-body density distributions.Comment: 28 pages, 12 tables, 7 figure
Astrophysical Reaction Rates for B(p,)Be and B(p,)Be From a Direct Model
The reactions B(p,)Be and B(p,)Be
are studied at thermonuclear energies using DWBA calculations. For both
reactions, transitions to the ground states and first excited states are
investigated. In the case of B(p,)Be, a resonance at
keV can be consistently described in the potential model, thereby
allowing the extension of the astrophysical -factor data to very low
energies. Strong interference with a resonance at about keV
require a Breit-Wigner description of that resonance and the introduction of an
interference term for the reaction B(p,)Be. Two
isospin resonances (at keV and keV)
observed in the B+p reactions necessitate Breit-Wigner resonance and
interference terms to fit the data of the B(p,)Be
reaction. -factors and thermonuclear reaction rates are given for each
reaction. The present calculation is the first consistent parametrization for

Alpha scattering and capture reactions in the A = 7 system at low energies
Differential cross sections for He- scattering were measured in
the energy range up to 3 MeV. These data together with other available
experimental results for He and H scattering were
analyzed in the framework of the optical model using double-folded potentials.
The optical potentials obtained were used to calculate the astrophysical
S-factors of the capture reactions HeBe and
HLi, and the branching ratios for the transitions into
the two final Be and Li bound states, respectively. For
HeBe excellent agreement between calculated and
experimental data is obtained. For HLi a value
has been found which is a factor of about 1.5 larger than the adopted value.

Beyond Implications and Applications: the Story of âSafety by Designâ
Using long-term anthropological observations at the Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology in Houston, Texas, the article demonstrates in detail the creation of new objects, new venues and new modes of veridiction which have reoriented the disciplines of materials chemistry and nanotoxicology. Beginning with the confusion surrounding the meaning of âimplicationsâ and âapplicationsâ the article explores the creation of new venues (CBEN and its offshoot the International Council on Nanotechnology); it then demonstrates how the demands for a responsible, safe or ethical science were translated into new research and experiment in and through these venues. Finally it shows how âsafety by designâ emerged as a way to go beyond implications and applications, even as it introduced a whole new array of controversies concerning its viability, validity and legitimacy
A Nuclear Localization of the Infectious Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus NV Protein Is Necessary for Optimal Viral Growth
The nonvirion (NV) protein of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) has been previously reported to be essential for efficient growth and pathogenicity of IHNV. However, little is known about the mechanism by which the NV supports the viral growth. In this study, cellular localization of NV and its role in IHNV growth in host cells was investigated. Through transient transfection in RTG-2 cells of NV fused to green fluorescent protein (GFP), a nuclear localization of NV was demonstrated. Deletion analyses showed that the 32EGDL35 residues were essential for nuclear localization of NV protein, and fusion of these 4 amino acids to GFP directed its transport to the nucleus. We generated a recombinant IHNV, rIHNV-NV-ÎEGDL in which the 32EGDL35 was deleted from the NV. rIHNVs with wild-type NV (rIHNV-NV) or with the NV gene replaced with GFP (rIHNV-ÎNV-GFP) were used as controls. RTG-2 cells infected with rIHNV-ÎNV-GFP and rIHNV-NV-ÎEGDL yielded 12- and 5-fold less infectious virion, respectively, than wild type rIHNV-infected cells at 48 h post-infection (p.i.). While treatment with poly Iâ¶C at 24 h p.i. did not inhibit replication of wild-type rIHNVs, replication rates of rIHNV-ÎNV-GFP and rIHNV-NV-ÎEGDL were inhibited by poly Iâ¶C. In addition, both rIHNV-ÎNV and rIHNV-NV-ÎEGDL induced higher levels of expressions of both IFN1 and Mx1 than wild-type rIHNV. These data suggest that the IHNV NV may support the growth of IHNV through inhibition of the INF system and the amino acid residues of 32EGDL35 responsible for nuclear localization are important for the inhibitory activity of NV
On the edge: Chaucer and Gowerâs queer glosses
In this article Diane Watt and I focus on a number of manuscript glosses accompanying the tale of Constance in Chaucer's The Man of Law's Tale and in Gower's Tale of Constance in Confessio Amantis. By applying queer theory to the paratextual apparatus of these manuscripts, we shed new light on the anxieties about authority and authorship shared by Chaucer and Gower (and their circles of collaborators). We also reevaluate the role of error and manuscripts variants, and argue for the queer pleasure provided by misprision and misinterpretation. This helps us to move away from patriarchal constructs on canon formation and manuscript transmission
