    Characterisation of an analogue liquid for hydrodynamic studies of gas-ionic liquid flows

    Ionic liquids are liquid salts at low temperatures (normally less than 100°C). They are powerful solvents with very low vapour pressure. They have great potentials in many applications such as gas absorption and chemical synthesis. However, they are expensive. This limits extensive studies towards establishing phenomenological models. To address this limitation, an analogue liquid, with properties similar to an ionic liquid, has been identified which on the grounds of cost and safety appears to be suitable. In this paper, the hydrodynamic behaviour of an ionic liquid in a bubble column is compared with those of water and other liquids with similar physical properties. Average gas holdup, bubble coalescence, bubble size and specific interfacial area with different liquids are examined. Gas hold-up was determined by monitoring the change of conductivity between two flush mounted rings. The differences in bubble size and coalescence are revealed by analysing the stills taken from a high speed video camera. The dominant flow pattern in a small diameter column with ionic liquids or other fluids having similar viscosity is slug flow. The small bubbles in the liquid slugs make a smaller contribution to the specific interfacial area than Taylor bubbles. It is observed that Taylor bubbles can coalesce.     30S Beam Development and X-ray Bursts

    Over the past three years, we have worked on developing a well-characterized 30S radioactive beam to be used in a future experiment aiming to directly measure the 30S(alpha,p) stellar reaction rate within the Gamow window of Type I X-ray bursts. The importance of the 30S(alpha,p) reaction to X-ray bursts is discussed. Given the astrophysical motivation, the successful results of and challenges involved in the production of a low-energy 30S beam are detailed.     Structure of Polyelectrolytes in Poor Solvent

    We present simulations on charged polymers in poor solvent. First we investigate in detail the dilute concentration range with and without imposed extension constraints. The resulting necklace polymer conformations are analyzed in detail. We find strong fluctuations in the number of pearls and their sizes leading only to small signatures in the form factor and the force-extension relation. The scaling of the peak in the structure factor with the monomer density shows a pertinent different behavior from good solvent chains.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. submitted to EP

    Atomic masses of intermediate-mass neutron-deficient nuclei with relative uncertainty down to 35-ppb via multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph

    High-precision mass measurements of 63^{63}Cu, 6466^{64-66}Zn, 65^{65}Ga, 6567^{65-67}Ge, 67^{67}As, 78,81^{78,81}Br, 80^{80}Rb, and 79^{79}Sr were performed utilizing a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph combined with the gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II. In the case of 65^{65}Ga, a mass uncertainty of 2.1 keV, corresponding to a relative precision of δm/m=3.5×108\delta m / m = 3.5\times10^{-8}, was obtained and the mass value is in excellent agreement with the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation. For 67^{67}Ge and 81^{81}Br, where masses were previously deduced through indirect measurements, discrepancies with literature values were found. The feasibility of using this device for mass measurements of nuclides more neutron-deficient side, which have significant impact on the rprp-process pathway, is discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

    Decay Properties of 266^{266}Bh and 262^{262}Db Produced in the 248^{248}Cm + 23^{23}Na Reaction

    Decay properties of an isotope 266^{266}Bh and its daughter nucleus 262^{262}Db produced by the 248^{248}Cm(23^{23}Na, 5\textit{n}) reaction were studied by using a gas-filled recoil separator coupled with a position-sensitive semiconductor detector. 266^{266}Bh was clearly identified from the correlation of the known nuclide, 262^{262}Db. The obtained decay properties of 266^{266}Bh and 262^{262}Db are consistent with those observed in the 278^{278}113 chain, which provided further confirmation of the discovery of 278^{278}113.Comment: Accepted for publication in J.     Prepared to react? Assessing the functional capacity of the primary health care system in rural Orissa, India to respond to the devastating flood of September 2008

    Background: Early detection of an impending flood and the availability of countermeasures to deal with it can significantly reduce its health impacts. In developing countries like India, public primary health care facilities are frontline organizations that deal with disasters particularly in rural settings. For developing robust counter reacting systems evaluating preparedness capacities within existing systems becomes necessary. Objective: The objective of the study is to assess the functional capacity of the primary health care system in Jagatsinghpur district of rural Orissa in India to respond to the devastating flood of September 2008. Methods: An onsite survey was conducted in all 29 primary and secondary facilities in five rural blocks (administrative units) of Jagatsinghpur district in Orissa state. A pre-tested structured questionnaire was administered face to face in the facilities. The data was entered, processed and analyzed using STATA® 10. Results: Data from our primary survey clearly shows that the healthcare facilities are ill prepared to handle the flood despite being faced by them annually. Basic utilities like electricity backup and essential medical supplies are lacking during floods. Lack of human resources along with missing standard operating procedures; pre-identified communication and incident command systems; effective leadership; and weak financial structures are the main hindering factors in mounting an adequate response to the floods. Conclusion: The 2008 flood challenged the primary curative and preventive health care services in Jagatsinghpur. Simple steps like developing facility specific preparedness plans which detail out standard operating procedures during floods and identify clear lines of command will go a long way in strengthening the response to future floods. Performance critiques provided by the grass roots workers, like this one, should be used for institutional learning and effective preparedness planning. Additionally each facility should maintain contingency funds for emergency response along with local vendor agreements to ensure stock supplies during floods. The facilities should ensure that baseline public health standards for health care delivery identified by the Government are met in non-flood periods in order to improve the response during floods. Building strong public primary health care systems is a development challenge. The recovery phases of disasters should be seen as an opportunity to expand and improve services and facilities

Thus, a deeper understanding of the photophysics underpinning the TADF mechanism is required to push materials design further. Previously reported analyses in the literature of the kinetics of the various processes occurring in a TADF material rely on several a priori assumptions to estimate the rate constants for forward and reverse intersystem crossing (ISC and RISC, respectively). In this report, we demonstrate a method to determine these rate constants using a three-state model together with a steady-state approximation and, importantly, no additional assumptions. Further, we derive the exact rate equations, greatly facilitating a comparison of the TADF properties of structurally diverse emitters and providing a comprehensive understanding of the photophysics of these systems.PostprintPostprintPeer reviewe

    Detectability of colorectal neoplasia with fluorine-18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography and computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT)

    The purpose of this study was to analyze the detectability of colorectal neoplasia with fluorine-18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT). Data for a total of 492 patients who had undergone both PET/CT and colonoscopy were analyzed. After the findings of PET/CT and colonoscopy were determined independently, the results were compared in each of the six colonic sites examined in all patients. The efficacy of PET/CT was determined using colonoscopic examination as the gold standard. In all, 270 colorectal lesions 5 mm or more in size, including 70 pathologically confirmed malignant lesions, were found in 172 patients by colonoscopy. The sensitivity and specificity of PET/CT for detecting any of the colorectal lesions were 36 and 98%, respectively. For detecting lesions 11 mm or larger, the sensitivity was increased to 85%, with the specificity remaining consistent (97%). Moreover, the sensitivity for tumors 21 mm or larger was 96% (48/50). Tumors with malignant or high-grade pathology were likely to be positive with PET/CT. A size of 10 mm or smaller [odds ratio (OR) 44.14, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 11.44-221.67] and flat morphology (OR 7.78, 95% CI 1.79-36.25) were significant factors that were associated with false-negative cases on PET/CT. The sensitivity of PET/CT for detecting colorectal lesions is acceptable, showing size- and pathology-dependence, suggesting, for the most part, that clinically relevant lesions are detectable with PET/CT. However, when considering PET/CT for screening purposes caution must be exercised because there are cases of false-negative results
