A neuronal network model of interictal and recurrent ictal activity
We propose a neuronal network model which undergoes a saddle-node bifurcation
on an invariant circle as the mechanism of the transition from the interictal
to the ictal (seizure) state. In the vicinity of this transition, the model
captures important dynamical features of both interictal and ictal states. We
study the nature of interictal spikes and early warnings of the transition
predicted by this model. We further demonstrate that recurrent seizures emerge

Bounds on the electromagnetic interactions of excited spin-3/2 leptons
We discuss possible deviations from QED produced by a virtual excited
spin-3/2 lepton in the reaction . Data recorded
by the OPAL Collaboration at a c.m. energy are used to

Performance of a Large Area Avalanche Photodiode in a Liquid Xenon Ionization and Scintillation Chamber
Scintillation light produced in liquid xenon (LXe) by alpha particles,
electrons and gamma-rays was detected with a large area avalanche photodiode
(LAAPD) immersed in the liquid. The alpha scintillation yield was measured as a
function of applied electric field. We estimate the quantum efficiency of the
LAAPD to be 45%. The best energy resolution from the light measurement at zero
electric field is 7.5%(sigma) for 976 keV internal conversion electrons from
Bi-207 and 2.6%(sigma) for 5.5 MeV alpha particles from Am-241. The detector
used for these measurements was also operated as a gridded ionization chamber
to measure the charge yield. We confirm that using a LAAPD in LXe does not
introduce impurities which inhibit the drifting of free electrons.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
Bilateral negotiation in a multi-agent supply chain system
A supply chain is a set of organizations directly linked by flows of services from suppliers to customers. Supply chain activities range from the ordering and receipt of raw materials to the production and distribution of finished goods. Supply chain management is the integration of key activities across a supply chain for the purposes of building competitive infrastructures, synchronizing supply with demand, and leveraging worldwide logistics. This paper addresses the challenges created by supply chain management towards improving long-term performance of companies. It presents a multi-agent supply chain system composed of multiple software agents, each responsible for one or more supply chain activities, and each interacting with other agents in the execution of their responsibilities. Additionally, this paper presents the key features of a negotiation model for software agents. The model handles bilateral multi-issue negotiation and incorporates an alternating offers protocol, a set of logrolling strategies, and a set of negotiation tactics
Moduli Stabilisation in Heterotic Models with Standard Embedding
In this note we analyse the issue of moduli stabilisation in 4d models
obtained from heterotic string compactifications on manifolds with SU(3)
structure with standard embedding. In order to deal with tractable models we
first integrate out the massive fields. We argue that one can not only
integrate out the moduli fields, but along the way one has to truncate also the
corresponding matter fields. We show that the effective models obtained in this
way do not have satisfactory solutions. We also look for stabilised vacua which
take into account the presence of the matter fields. We argue that this also
fails due to a no-go theorem for Minkowski vacua in the moduli sector which we
prove in the end. The main ingredient for this no-go theorem is the constraint

Violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality with matter waves
The Cauchy-Schwarz (CS) inequality -- one of the most widely used and
important inequalities in mathematics -- can be formulated as an upper bound to
the strength of correlations between classically fluctuating quantities.
Quantum mechanical correlations can, however, exceed classical bounds.Here we
realize four-wave mixing of atomic matter waves using colliding Bose-Einstein
condensates, and demonstrate the violation of a multimode CS inequality for
atom number correlations in opposite zones of the collision halo. The
correlated atoms have large spatial separations and therefore open new
opportunities for extending fundamental quantum-nonlocality tests to ensembles

The type of adjuvant in whole inactivated influenza a virus vaccines impacts vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease
Influenza A virus (IAV) causes a disease burden in the swine industry in the US and is a challenge to prevent due to substantial genetic and antigenic diversity of IAV that circulate in pig populations. Whole inactivated virus (WIV) vaccines formulated with oil-in-water (OW) adjuvant are commonly used in swine. However, WIV-OW are associated with vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease (VAERD) when the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase of the vaccine strain are mismatched with the challenge virus. Here, we assessed if different types of adjuvant in WIV vaccine formulations impacted VAERD outcome. WIV vaccines with a swine δ1-H1N2 were formulated with different commercial adjuvants: OW1, OW2, nano-emulsion squalene-based (NE) and gel polymer (GP). Pigs were vaccinated twice by the intramuscular route, 3 weeks apart, then challenged with an H1N1pdm09 three weeks post-boost and necropsied at 5 days post infection. All WIV vaccines elicited antibodies detected using the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay against the homologous vaccine virus, but not against the heterologous challenge virus; in contrast, all vaccinated groups had cross-reactive IgG antibody and IFN-γ responses against H1N1pdm09, with a higher magnitude observed in OW groups. Both OW groups demonstrated robust homologous HI titers and cross-reactivity against heterologous H1 viruses in the same genetic lineage. However, both OW groups had severe immunopathology consistent with VAERD after challenge when compared to NE, GP, and non-vaccinated challenge controls. None of the WIV formulations protected pigs from heterologous virus replication in the lungs or nasal cavity. Thus, although the type of adjuvant in the WIV formulation played a significant role in the magnitude of immune response to homologous and antigenically similar H1, none tested here increased the breadth of protection against the antigenically-distinct challenge virus, and some impacted immunopathology after challenge
Scalar fields, bent branes, and RG flow
This work deals with braneworld scenarios driven by real scalar fields with
standard dynamics. We show how the first-order formalism which exists in the
case of four dimensional Minkowski space-time can be extended to de Sitter or
anti-de Sitter geometry in the presence of several real scalar fields. We
illustrate the results with some examples, and we take advantage of our
findings to investigate renormalization group flow. We have found symmetric
brane solutions with four-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometry whose
holographically dual field theory exhibits a weakly coupled regime at high
