Holographic characterization of chain photopolymerization
A holographic characterization technique is developed in accordance with a general photopolymerization model. The technique allows detailed quantification of the chemical parameters, including their variation from the Trommsdorff effect. The holographic procedure is especially suited for studying the diffusion of the chemical reactants
Amplitude-equation formalism for four-wave-mixing geometry with transmission gratings
An amplitude equation is derived for a four-wave-mixing geometry with nearly counterpropagating, mutually incoherent, nondiffracting pump beams, spatially overlapping in a photorefractive material with a nonlocal response. This equation extends the earlier linear two-dimensional theory to the weakly nonlinear regime. The analysis also starts from a more complete equation for the photorefractive effect, which leads to the prediction of novel effects especially apparent in the nonlinear regime. Precise predictions for the spatiotemporal behavior of the grating amplitude in the nonlinear regime are presented. The range of validity of the amplitude equation is studied. The characteristics of the instability in the nonlinear regime are analyzed through a front-selection analysis
Transition to an oscillator for double phase-conjugate mirror

Some of the novel quantified characteristics for double phase conjugate mirrors are analysed including the effects of the nonlinearity on the critical dynamics (approach to saturation) and on the spatial distribution of the grating (large scale distortion of the beams and conjugation fidelity) and sensitivity to noise (seeding). The approach used also clarifies the question of linear instability and predicts a new transition to an oscillatory regime
Gender differences in item format and skill area: Some evidence from an EFL acheievement test
Cataloged from PDF version of article.The present study investigated the extent to which male and female language learners’ scores on achievement tests
vary according to item format and skill areas. The statistical analysis of data from one achievement test administered
to 303 pre-intermediate level students indicated that males and females’ scores showed differences in both item
format and skill areas. While females outperformed males significantly with ‘find the correct form’ and ‘paragraph
writing’ questions, males did not show any superiority in any item format. Females also outperformed males in three
skill areas; ‘writing’ ‘grammar’ and ‘vocabulary’ while males scored higher only in ‘listening’. Possible reasons behind
these differences between males and females’ scores can benefit future researchers, language teachers, and

A reevaluation of the role of the unfolded protein response in islet dysfunction: maladaptation or a failure to adapt?
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress caused by perturbations in ER homeostasis activates an adaptive response termed the unfolded protein response (UPR) whose function is to resolve ER stress. If unsuccessful, the UPR initiates a proapoptotic program to eliminate the malfunctioning cells from the organism. It is the activation of this proapoptotic UPR in pancreatic β-cells that has been implicated in the onset of type 2 diabetes and thus, in this context, is considered a maladaptive response. However, there is growing evidence that β-cell death in type 2 diabetes may not be caused by a maladaptive UPR but by the inhibition of the adaptive UPR. In this review, we discuss the evidence for a role of the UPR in β-cell dysfunction and death in the development of type 2 diabetes and ask the following question: Is β-cell dysfunction the result of a maladaptive UPR or a failure of the UPR to adequately adapt? The answer to this question is critically important in defining potential therapeutic strategies for the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes. In addition, we discuss the potential role of the adaptive UPR in staving off type 2 diabetes by enhancing β-cell mass and function in response to insulin resistance
A Search for Vector Diquarks at the CERN LHC
Resonant production of the first generation vector diquarks at the CERN Large
Hadron Collider (LHC) is investigated. It is shown that the LHC will be able to
discover vector diquarks with masses up to 9 TeV for quark-diquark-quark
coupling alpha_(D)=0.1 and 4 TeV for alpha_(D)=5x10^(-4).Comment: 9 pages, 4 tables, 4 figure
Polarized Proton Beams from Laser-induced Plasmas
We report on the concept of an innovative source to produce polarized
proton/deuteron beams of a kinetic energy up to several GeV from a laser-driven
plasma accelerator. Spin effects have been implemented into the PIC simulation
code VLPL to make theoretical predictions about the behavior of proton spins in
laser-induced plasmas. Simulations of spin-polarized targets show that the
polarization is conserved during the acceleration process. For the experimental
realization, a polarized HCl gas-jet target is under construction using the
fundamental wavelength of a Nd:YAG laser system to align the HCl bonds and
simultaneously circular polarized light of the fifth harmonic to
photo-dissociate, yielding nuclear polarized H atoms. Subsequently, their
degree of polarization is measured with a Lamb-shift polarimeter. The final
experiments, aiming at the first observation of a polarized particle beam from
laser-generated plasmas, will be carried out at the 10 PW laser system SULF at
SIOM/Shanghai.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
GaN directional couplers for integrated quantum photonics
Large cross-section GaN waveguides are proposed as a suitable architecture to
achieve integrated quantum photonic circuits. Directional couplers with this
geometry have been designed with aid of the beam propagation method and
fabricated using inductively coupled plasma etching. Scanning electron
microscopy inspection shows high quality facets for end coupling and a well
defined gap between rib pairs in the coupling region. Optical characterization
at 800 nm shows single-mode operation and coupling-length-dependent splitting
ratios. Two photon interference of degenerate photon pairs has been observed in
the directional coupler by measurement of the Hong-Ou-Mandel dip with 96%
