Pattern formation during diffusion limited transformations in solids
We develop a description of diffusion limited growth in solid-solid
transformations, which are strongly influenced by elastic effects. Density
differences and structural transformations provoke stresses at interfaces,
which affect the phase equilibrium conditions. We formulate equations for the
interface kinetics similar to dendritic growth and study the growth of a stable
phase from a metastable solid in both a channel geometry and in free space. We
perform sharp interface calculations based on Green's function methods and
phase field simulations, supplemented by analytical investigations. For pure
dilatational transformations we find a single growing finger with symmetry
breaking at higher driving forces, whereas for shear transformations the
emergence of twin structures can be favorable. We predict the steady state
shapes and propagation velocities, which can be higher than in conventional
dendritic growth.Comment: submitted to Philosophical Magazin
Ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 square-lattice J1-J2 model with plaquette structure
Using the coupled cluster method for high orders of approximation and Lanczos
exact diagonalization we study the ground-state phase diagram of a quantum
spin-1/2 J1-J2 model on the square lattice with plaquette structure. We
consider antiferromagnetic (J1>0) as well as ferromagnetic (J1<0)
nearest-neighbor interactions together with frustrating antiferromagnetic
next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2>0. The strength of inter-plaquette
interaction lambda varies between lambda=1 (that corresponds to the uniform
J1-J2 model) and lambda=0 (that corresponds to isolated frustrated 4-spin
plaquettes). While on the classical level (s \to \infty) both versions of
models (i.e., with ferro- and antiferromagnetic J1) exhibit the same
ground-state behavior, the ground-state phase diagram differs basically for the
quantum case s=1/2. For the antiferromagnetic case (J1 > 0) Neel
antiferromagnetic long-range order at small J2/J1 and lambda \gtrsim 0.47 as
well as collinear striped antiferromagnetic long-range order at large J2/J1 and
lambda \gtrsim 0.30 appear which correspond to their classical counterparts.
Both semi-classical magnetic phases are separated by a nonmagnetic quantum
paramagnetic phase. The parameter region, where this nonmagnetic phase exists,
increases with decreasing of lambda. For the ferromagnetic case (J1 < 0) we
have the trivial ferromagnetic ground state at small J2/|J1|. By increasing of
J2 this classical phase gives way for a semi-classical plaquette phase, where
the plaquette block spins of length s=2 are antiferromagnetically long-range
ordered. Further increasing of J2 then yields collinear striped
antiferromagnetic long-range order for lambda \gtrsim 0.38, but a nonmagnetic
quantum paramagnetic phase lambda \lesssim 0.38.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figure

Spectroscopy of doubly charmed baryons: and
Using the quark-diquark approximation in the framework of Buchm\" uller-Tye
potential model, we investigate the spectroscopy of doubly charmed baryons:
and . Our results include the masses, parameters
of radial wave functions of states with the different excitations of both
diquark and light quark-diquark system. We calculate the values of fine and
hyperfine splittings of these levels and discuss some new features, connected
to the identity of heavy quarks, in the dynamics of hadronic and radiative
transitions between the states of these baryons.Comment: 10 pages, Latex file, 1 fig, corrected some typo
Space power distribution system technology. Volume 1: Reference EPS design
The multihundred kilowatt electrical power aspects of a mannable space platform in low Earth orbit is analyzed from a cost and technology viewpoint. At the projected orbital altitudes, Shuttle launch and servicing are technically and economically viable. Power generation is specified as photovoltaic consistent with projected planning. The cost models and trades are based upon a zero interest rate (the government taxes concurrently as required), constant dollars (1980), and costs derived in the first half of 1980. Space platform utilization of up to 30 years is evaluated to fully understand the impact of resupply and replacement as satellite missions are extended. Such lifetimes are potentially realizable with Shuttle servicing capability and are economically desirable
Fragmentation production of doubly heavy baryons
Baryons with a single heavy quark are being studied experimentally at
present. Baryons with two units of heavy flavor will be abundantly produced not
only at future colliders, but also at existing facilities. In this paper we
study the production via heavy quark fragmentation of baryons containing two
heavy quarks at the Tevatron, the LHC, HERA, and the NLC. The production rate
is woefully small at HERA and at the NLC, but significant at and
machines. We present distributions in various kinematical variables
in addition to the integrated cross sections at hadron colliders.Comment: 13 pages, macro package epsfig needed, 6 .eps figure files in a

New Algorithm for Mixmaster Dynamics
We present a new numerical algorithm for evolving the Mixmaster spacetimes.
By using symplectic integration techniques to take advantage of the exact Taub
solution for the scattering between asymptotic Kasner regimes, we evolve these
spacetimes with higher accuracy using much larger time steps than previously
possible. The longer Mixmaster evolution thus allowed enables detailed
comparison with the Belinskii, Khalatnikov, Lifshitz (BKL) approximate
Mixmaster dynamics. In particular, we show that errors between the BKL
prediction and the measured parameters early in the simulation can be
eliminated by relaxing the BKL assumptions to yield an improved map. The
improved map has different predictions for vacuum Bianchi Type IX and magnetic
Bianchi Type VI Mixmaster models which are clearly matched in the
simulation.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, 4 eps figure
Optical conductivity of one-dimensional doped Hubbard-Mott insulator
We study the optical response of a strongly correlated electron system near
the metal-insulator transition using a mapping to the sine-Gordon model. With
semiclassical quantization, the spectral weight is distributed between a Drude
peak and absorption lines due to breathers. We calculate the Drude weight, the
optical gap, and the lineshape of breather absorption.Comment: 4 pages, 2 EPS figures, REVTEX 4, a final versio
Theory of four-wave mixing of matter waves from a Bose-Einstein condensate
A recent experiment [Deng et al., Nature 398, 218(1999)] demonstrated
four-wave mixing of matter wavepackets created from a Bose-Einstein condensate.
The experiment utilized light pulses to create two high-momentum wavepackets
via Bragg diffraction from a stationary Bose-Einstein condensate. The
high-momentum components and the initial low momentum condensate interact to
form a new momentum component due to the nonlinear self-interaction of the
bosonic atoms. We develop a three-dimensional quantum mechanical description,
based on the slowly-varying-envelope approximation, for four-wave mixing in
Bose-Einstein condensates using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We apply this description to describe the experimental observations and to make
predictions. We examine the role of phase-modulation, momentum and energy
conservation (i.e., phase-matching), and particle number conservation in
four-wave mixing of matter waves, and develop simple models for understanding
our numerical results.Comment: 18 pages Revtex preprint form, 13 eps figure
Breakdown of time-dependent mean-field theory for a one-dimensional condensate of impenetrable bosons
We show that the time-dependent nonlinear Schrodinger equation of mean-field
theory has limited utility for a one-dimensional condensate of impenetrable
bosons. Mean-field theory with its associated order parameter predicts
interference between split condensates that are recombined, whereas an exact
many-body treatment shows minimal interference.Comment: 4 pages, 2 EPS figure
