    Hypolithic Microbial Community of Quartz Pavement in the High-Altitude Tundra of Central Tibet

    The hypolithic microbial community associated with quartz pavement at a high-altitude tundra location in central Tibet is described. A small-scale ecological survey indicated that 36% of quartz rocks were colonized. Community profiling using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism revealed no significant difference in community structure among a number of colonized rocks. Real-time quantitative PCR and phylogenetic analysis of environmental phylotypes obtained from clone libraries were used to elucidate community structure across all domains. The hypolithon was dominated by cyanobacterial phylotypes (73%) with relatively low frequencies of other bacterial phylotypes, largely represented by the chloroflexi, actinobacteria, and bacteriodetes. Unidentified crenarchaeal phylotypes accounted for 4% of recoverable phylotypes, while algae, fungi, and mosses were indicated by a small fraction of recoverable phylotypes

    Exomorfología y anatomía de órganos vegetativos aéreos en especies de Flourensia DC. (Asteraceae) con importancia fitoquímica

    El género Flourensia DC. es americano y comprende 32 especies. Son arbustos resinosos utilizados en medicina popular; poseen un potencial valor económico, por lo que, en algunas especies representantes, se han caracterizado sus compuestos químicos y determinado algunos posibles usos. En el presente trabajo, se estudió la exomorfología y anatomía de órganos vegetativos de F. hirta S. F. Blake, F. leptopoda S. F. Blake, F. niederleinii S. F. Blake y F. tortuosa Griseb., especies endémicas del centro de Argentina. Se observó que todas son similares en cuanto a la anatomía de hoja y tallo. En cuanto al estudio de la epidermis foliar, se concluye que es posible diferenciar las especies teniendo en cuenta la frecuencia estomática y la presencia de tricomas. Finalmente, las diferencias más notables se encontraron en la exomorfología foliar ya que se observó una gran variación en cuanto a la forma de las hojas y tamaño de las láminas y pecíolos. Con respecto a las estructuras secretoras, se encontraron tricomas y conductos secretores esquizógenos en las hojas y los tallos de todas las especies, las cuales serían responsables de la producción y secreción de las resinas.The genus Flourensia DC. is American and comprises 32 species. They are resiniferous shrubs used in folk medicine. As they have potential economic value, its chemical compounds have been characterized and some possible uses identified. In this work, the exomorphology and anatomy of vegetative organs of F. hirta S. F. Blake, F. leptopoda S. F. Blake, F. niederleinii S. F. Blake and F. tortuosa Griseb., endemic species from central Argentina, have been studied. All species are similar in leaf and stem anatomy. Regarding the epidermis, it is possible to differentiate the species according to the stomatal frequency and the presence of trichomes. Finally, the most remarkable differences were found in leaf exomorphology, since there was a large variation in shape and size of blades and petioles. Concerning the secretory structures, trichomes and secretory ducts were found in the leaves and stems of all species, which would be responsible for the production and secretion of the resins

    Classification of Neurorehabilitation treatments: Preliminary results of a Multicentre Italian Study

    Objective: To taxonomize the contents of neurorehabilitation programs and categorize goals and treatments provided to people with Parkinson Disease(PD) and Multiple Sclerosis(MS) to understand their impact on the outcomes. Background: Few researches investigated the importance of the com- ponents of a neurorehabilitation program on clinical outcome in everyday clinical practice[1,2]. Moreover, there is no standard method to categorize rehabilitative interventions, making difficult to explain why subjects improve and which of the various treatments is more effective. A multi- centre network was formed to collect data using a taxonomy tool devel- oped to provide information on the goals of rehabilitation and to categorize rehabilitation interventions. Methods: Subjects with PD and MS were evaluated pre and post inter- vention and a taxonomy tool was completed by physiotherapists at the end of the rehabilitation program. To provide a broad overview, treatments were categorized as \u201cTask oriented\u201d or \u201cImpairment oriented\u201d. In addition, subjects who improved 20% or more on the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) were defined as responders. Frequency analysis was performed to understand prevalence of goals and treatments and logistic models were used to provide Odd Ratio(OR) with 95% CI to provide degree of associa- tion between treatment and outcome. Results: We report preliminary data of 54 subjects (18 PD, 36 MS) from 1 of the 11 centres involved in this project. 1060 hours of physio- therapy were analysed. Gait was the main goal for both PD(54%) and MS(40.5%) followed by body transfers for PD(12%) and upper limb func- tion for MS(23.5%). Most frequent treatments were gait(27.6%) and bal- ance(17.7%) training for PD, while robotic therapy(25.6%) and gait training (13.3%) were mostly used for MS. MBI results showed 28% of PD were responders compared with 10% of MS subjects OR=3.8 (0.7-23.6;p=0.1). \u201cTask oriented\u201d treatment provided to 36% of PD and 19% of MS showed better results on the MBI, OR=17(12-355;p = 0.002) compared with the \u201cImpairment oriented\u201d treatment. Conclusions: Gait was the main goal of rehabilitation for PD and MS and the most frequently provided treatments were gait training and robot therapy. Preliminary results showed that improvements in functional out- come were more likely in PD subjects and in those who received Task ori- ented treatment.     Epstein-Barr virus lymphoproliferative disease (EBV-LPD) following allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) has a poor prognosis. We used a sensitive real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for quantitative detection of EBV-DNA in plasma and serially measured EBV-DNA levels to assess the response to treatment in allo-SCT recipients with EBV-LPD. Fourteen allo-SCT recipients with EBV-LPD who received a T cell-depleted (TCD) sibling (n = 5) or matched unrelated donor (n = 9) graft were monitored from the time of EBV-LPD diagnosis, during therapy and assessment of clinical response. Seven patients had complete responses of EBV-LPD to therapy, of whom 21% (3 out of 14) survived beyond 6 months from EBV-LPD diagnosis. Clinically responding patients showed a rapid decline of EBV-DNA plasma levels within 72 h from the start of therapy. In contrast, all clinical non-responders showed an increase of EBV-DNA levels. Absolute EBV-DNA levels at the time of EBV-LPD diagnosis did not predict for response, but the pattern of EBV-DNA levels within 72 h from the start of therapy (> 50% decrease versus increase) strongly predicted for clinical response (P = 0.001). Quantitative monitoring of EBV-DNA levels from the start of and during therapy for EBV-LPD rapidly and accurately predicts for response to therapy as early as within 72 h. It may thus provide a powerful tool to adjust and select treatment in individuals with EBV-LPD following allo-SC

    Feeding behavior of sheep fed diets with Elaeis guineensis palm kernel meal.

    Para avaliar o comportamento ingestivo de ovinos alimentados com dietas contendo diferentes níveis de farelo de dendê em substituição à silagem de milho, realizou-se ensaio metabólico, com 20 ovinos fêmeas, cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições, durante 25 dias. Os animais receberam dieta com silagem de milho (SM) e níveis crescentes de inclusão (0%, 15%, 30%, 45 e 60%) de farelo de dendê (FD). Foram avaliados o consumo de matéria seca (CMS) e de fibra detergente neutra (CFDN), tempo em alimentação (TAL), ruminação (TRU) e ócio (TOC), número de mastigações merícicas por bolo (NMM/bolo), tempo despendido para ruminação de cada bolo (TR/bolo), gramas de MS e FDN por bolo, número de bolos ruminados por dia (NBR/dia), eficiências de ingestão e ruminação, em g MS/hora e g FDN/hora, tempo de mastigação total (TMT), em h/dia, e número de mastigações merícicas por dia (NMM/dia). Os CMS e CFDN aumentaram linearmente (P<0,05), sendo que a partir de 43,18% e 39,15%, respectivamente, de inclusão de FD na dieta, os valores de consumo diferiram (P<0,05) do tratamento com 0% de inclusão. O TAL reduziu linearmente (P<0,05), sendo que a partir de 28,05% de inclusão do subproduto, diferiu do tratamento com 0%, com redução de 0.0613 unidades percentuais, a cada 1% de inclusão de FD. O TOC e TRU apresentaram efeito quadrático (P<0,05). O TR/bolo, em segundos, apresentou comportamento quadrático e o valor mínimo foi de 44,37 segundos, no nível de 35,19% de FD. Observou-se efeito (P<0,05) quadrático para do TMT e MM, em todas as formas que foram expressas. A inclusão de FD na dieta melhora alguns parâmetros do comportamento ingestivo, sendo recomendada sua utilização até o nível de 40% na dieta.Made available in DSpace on 2017-12-21T23:25:47Z (GMT).
