Mapping and stability of QTLs for seed weight in common beans under different environments.

The objectives were: 1 - to identify, under different environments, RAPD markers linked to loci that control the 100 seed weight of common beans; 2 - to evaluate the existence of interactions involving QTL's with planting dates and locations; 3 - to compare detection procedures of markers linked to QTL's utilizing the methods of mapping and multiple regression. One hundred and minety-six recombinant inbred lines derived from the cross of cultivars Carioca x Flor de Mayo were evaluated under two tradtional sowing dates for common beans in 1996, 1997 and 1998, in Lavras and Patos de Minas, Brazil. For the phenotypic evaluation of the families, seven field experiments were conduced. The experimental design used was a 14 x 14 partially balanced Square Simple Lattice. Results indicated that interaction of QTL's by location were significant, and some stable QTL's were identified. Multiple regression analysis identified a greater number of QTL's-linked markers than the process of composite interval mapping. There was no coincidence between results obtained with the two methods studied. Molecular markers which were considered of greater potential use on marker-assisted selection for seed weight were OPN-02 (1445 pb) e OPM-06 (1096 pb)

A Thorn in a Haystack: A Rare Case of Septic Arthritis

Pantoea agglomerans is a facultative anaerobe and environmental bacterium that could be a cause of opportunistic human infections, especially in wound infection with plant material. Arthritis or synovitis secondary to penetrating plant thorn injuries is not frequently reported. We present the case of a 35-year-old otherwise healthy male with a bramble thorn penetrating injury of the left knee. P. agglomerans was isolated from the synovial fluid. The patient was treated with amoxicillin/clavulanate according to sensitivity testing. This case highlights the importance of precise and thorough medical history, especially for less common presentations, as well as source control.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Collapsing Glomerulopathy. A Treatable Disease?

    Get PDF
Renal disease is a relatively common complication in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients and has become the fourth leading cause of death in AIDS individuals, immediately following septicaemia, pneumonia and hepatic disease. HIV associated nephropathy, HIV associated immune complex renal disease and HIV associated thrombotic microangiopathy are the main causes of chronic renal failure in this population. The authors report a case of a 44 year-old black male, HIV 1 infected with low CD4 count, admitted to the nephrology department with non nephrotic proteinuria and renal failure. Renal biopsy revealed a focal segmental glomerulosclerosis collapsing variant. The patient was treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy and an ACE inhibitor and, at 3 months of follow-up, has recovered his renal function. This case illustrates the efficacy of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on HIV associated nephropathy. Prospective studies are needed to evaluate HAART in the treatment of HIV associated nephropathies

Selection index as a priori information for using artificial neural networks to classify alfalfa genotypes.

The efficiency of a selection index generally depends on the quality of the variance matrixes, which demands controlled experiments. Using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) trained from a selection index is advantageous for selecting genotypes since an ANN has the capacity to classify genotypes in an automated way. We propose the use of ANNs for the selection of alfalfa genotypes, based on a selection index. Data were collected from 77 alfalfa genotypes evaluated based on nine traits from four cuttings. The traits were divided into forage yield and nutritive value groups. In order for the ANNs to learn the classification pattern, the Tai index was used, which allows secondary traits to be included in the index to improve the gains of the main traits. An index was established for each group of traits, and based on the index scores the genotypes were subdivided into four classes (optimal, good, medium, and bad). After testing different topologies, ANNs were established for each index, according to the apparent error rates. The chosen ANNs were efficient in classifying the genotypes since the highest apparent error rate reached 15%, meaning that the ANNs efficiently captured the data pattern. Considering the ANN classification for both groups of traits, there was a high degree of agreement with the classification obtained from the Tai index, as expected. Even in the cuttings where the ANNs presented the worst performance, their potential to classify alfalfa genotypes was clear, because the wrong classifications were placed in groups close to the correct ones. This ensured that the best genotypes did not run the risk of being discarded, since they would not classified in the group of bad genotypes. The ANNs that were developed have good potential for use in alfalfa breeding programs.On-line First
