Online assessment of negotiation skills through 3D role play simulation
The lack of standardised technological tools to assess psychological characteristics allows traditional tests to be still widely used, though these tests require double processing and expensive procedures. ENACT is both a serious game for a standardised assessment of the user negotiation skills and an Intelligent Tutoring System, which makes use of the data collected during the interaction in order to generate a tailored environment for the user to experience and improve their skills and be guided through learning
Fragmentation studies of high energy ions using CR39 nuclear track detectors
We report on the measurements of the total charge changing fragmentation
cross sections in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions using Fe, Si and Pb
incident ions. Several stacks of CR39 nuclear track detectors with different
target combinations were exposed at normal incidence to high energy accelerator
beams to integrated densities of about 2000 ions/cm^2. The nuclear track
detector foils were chemically etched, and ion tracks were measured using an
automatic image analyzer system. The cross section determination is based on
the charge identification of beam ions and their fragments and on the
reconstruction of their path through the stacks.Comment: 5 pages, 4 EPS figures. Corrected Eq. 3 and Table 1. Presented at the

The possible role of the ubiquitin proteasome system in the development of atherosclerosis in diabetes
We have reviewed the impact of the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) on atherosclerosis progression of diabetic patients. A puzzle of many pieces of evidence suggests that UPS, in addition to its role in the removal of damaged proteins, is involved in a number of biological processes including inflammation, proliferation and apoptosis, all of which constitute important characteristics of atherosclerosis. From what can be gathered from the very few studies on the UPS in diabetic cardiovascular diseases published so far, the system seems to be functionally active to a different extent in the initiation, progression, and complication stage of atherosclerosis in the diabetic people. Further evidence for this theory, however, has to be given, for instance by specifically targeted antagonism of the UPS. Nonetheless, this hypothesis may help us understand why diverse therapeutic interventions, which have in common the ability to reduce ubiquitin-proteasome activity, can impede or delay the onset of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD)
Search for Intermediate Mass Magnetic Monopoles and Nuclearites with the SLIM experiment
SLIM is a large area experiment (440 m2) installed at the Chacaltaya cosmic
ray laboratory since 2001, and about 100 m2 at Koksil, Himalaya, since 2003. It
is devoted to the search for intermediate mass magnetic monopoles (107-1013
GeV/c2) and nuclearites in the cosmic radiation using stacks of CR39 and
Makrofol nuclear track detectors. In four years of operation it will reach a
sensitivity to a flux of about 10-15 cm-2 s-1 sr-1. We present the results of
the calibration of CR39 and Makrofol and the analysis of a first sample of the
exposed detector.Comment: Presented at the 22nd ICNTS, Barcelona 200

Search for spontaneous muon emission from lead nuclei
We describe a possible search for muonic radioactivity from lead nuclei using
the base elements ("bricks" composed by lead and nuclear emulsion sheets) of
the long-baseline OPERA neutrino experiment. We present the results of a Monte
Carlo simulation concerning the expected event topologies and estimates of the
background events. Using few bricks, we could reach a good sensitivity level.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
System-Wide Immunohistochemical Analysis of Protein Co-Localization
Background: The analysis of co-localized protein expression in a tissue section is often conducted with immunofluorescence histochemical staining which is typically visualized in localized regions. On the other hand, chromogenic immunohistochemical staining, in general, is not suitable for the detection of protein co-localization. Here, we developed a new protocol, based on chromogenic immunohistochemical stain, for system-wide detection of protein co-localization and differential expression. Methodology/Principal Findings: In combination with a removable chromogenic stain, an efficient antibody stripping method was developed to enable sequential immunostaining with different primary antibodies regardless of antibody’s host species. Sections were scanned after each staining, and the images were superimposed together for the detection of protein co-localization and differential expression. As a proof of principle, differential expression and co-localization of glutamic acid decarboxylase67 (GAD67) and parvalbumin proteins was examined in mouse cortex. Conclusions/Significance: All parvalbumin-containing neurons express GAD67 protein, and GAD67-positive neurons that do not express parvalbumin were readily visualized from thousands of other neurons across mouse cortex. The method provided a global view of protein co-localization as well as differential expression across an entire tissue section. Repeate
Bayesian hierarchical clustering for studying cancer gene expression data with unknown statistics
Clustering analysis is an important tool in studying gene expression data. The Bayesian hierarchical clustering (BHC) algorithm can automatically infer the number of clusters and uses Bayesian model selection to improve clustering quality. In this paper, we present an extension of the BHC algorithm. Our Gaussian BHC (GBHC) algorithm represents data as a mixture of Gaussian distributions. It uses normal-gamma distribution as a conjugate prior on the mean and precision of each of the Gaussian components. We tested GBHC over 11 cancer and 3 synthetic datasets. The results on cancer datasets show that in sample clustering, GBHC on average produces a clustering partition that is more concordant with the ground truth than those obtained from other commonly used algorithms. Furthermore, GBHC frequently infers the number of clusters that is often close to the ground truth. In gene clustering, GBHC also produces a clustering partition that is more biologically plausible than several other state-of-the-art methods. This suggests GBHC as an alternative tool for studying gene expression data. The implementation of GBHC is available at https://sites.
