Race, Gender, and Research: Implications for Teaching from Depictions of Professors in Popular Film, 1985-2005
When students enter college classrooms for the first time they inevitably have preconceived images of professors. According to research on student evaluations of teaching, these preconceptions have important implications in college classrooms. This study explores one avenue through which these preconceptions are perpetuated – popular film. Using content analysis we examine popular films released between 1985 and 2005 that contain professors in either primary or secondary roles. Our findings show stereotypical depictions beyond glasses, bow ties, and tweed jackets. Specifically, we find stereotypical images of race and gender as well as an emphasis on the importance of research, sometimes at the expense of teaching or ethical behavior. This research provides instructors with knowledge of the stereotypes that students may have upon entering the college classroom, which may impact classroom interactions and provides insight into how race and gender affect student evaluations of professors

Seasonal habitat use and movements of woodland caribou in the Omineca Mountains, north central British Columbia, 1991-1993
From 1991 to 1993, 30 woodland caribou were captured and fitted with radio-collars west of the Williston Reservoir in north central B.C. Monthly radio-telemetry location flights revealed that caribou in the Northern Area, characterized by a complex of mountain ranges, moved greater distances to calving areas than did those in the South, where only one major mountain range exists. In the year of record heavy snowfall for the area, all collared caribou wintered on windswept alpine slopes, while during the below average snowfall year, many caribou remained in forested habitats. In winter, caribou were found to forage on terrestrial lichens in both lowland lodgepole pine flats and on windswept alpine slopes, and on arboreal lichens in upper elevation Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir forests. There are at least 600-700 caribou in the Omineca Mountains
Power of Perspective: The Effects of Public Perceptions of Police and Fear of Crime on Attitudes Towards Aerial Drone Use
Historically, unmanned aerial systems (UAS; i.e., drones) have largely been used by the military and federal government. As UAS have become more affordable and easier to operate in recent years, state and local law enforcement agencies have become interested in adopting this technology to facilitate a wide range of police activities (e.g., search and rescue, surveillance, tactical operations, etc.). The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has begun to regulate the use of unmanned aerial systems, which will likely lead to the increased use of drone technology by law enforcement agencies across the country in upcoming years. However, previous research suggests that public perception of UAS use by the police is mixed, and in some cases there is considerable resistance to police departments adopting this technology. In the present research, we explore several personality factors related to public attitudes towards police UAS use. More specifically, we conducted a national survey examining the relationship between public perceptions of police legitimacy and effectiveness, as well as fear of crime and victimization, and police use of drone technology. The potential implications for public policy and law enforcement practices, particularly in terms of the introduction of UAS into local communities, are discussed
Optimal fidelity of teleportation of coherent states and entanglement
We study the Braunstein-Kimble protocol for the continuous variable
teleportation of a coherent state. We determine lower and upper bounds for the
optimal fidelity of teleportation, maximized over all local Gaussian operations
for a given entanglement of the two-mode Gaussian state shared by the sender
(Alice) and the receiver (Bob). We also determine the optimal local
transformations at Alice and Bob sites and the corresponding maximum fidelity
when one restricts to local trace-preserving Gaussian completely positive maps.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Testing Onion Market Integration in Pakistan
This paper analyses spatial market integration using monthly wholesale real price of onion in four regional markets located in each of the four provinces of Pakistan. Unit root test indicates that the price series in each location are stationary, and the series are represented as autoregressive model for eachlocation. The error correction model results show that the regional markets of onion have strong price linkages, and thus are spatially integrated.
