The use of professional portfolios and profiles for career enhancement.
Since 1995, registered nurses and midwives have been obliged to develop and maintain a professional portfolio of evidence reflecting the learning activities that they have undertaken and how these have informed and influenced their practice. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that rather then just a retrospective account of continuing professional development activities, a portfolio can be used as a vehicle for engaging in self-assessment and personal development planning. Possible structures and type of evidence are explored and portfolios in the context of gaining accreditation for prior experiential learning, and in particular for those nurses in advanced clinical roles, are discussed
Quantitative Determination of the Adiabatic Condition Using Force-Detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
The adiabatic condition governing cyclic adiabatic inversion of proton spins
in a micron-sized ammonium chloride crystal was studied using room temperature
nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy. A systematic degradation of
signal-to-noise was observed as the adiabatic condition became violated. A
theory of adiabatic following applicable to cyclic adiabatic inversion is
reviewed and implemented to quantitatively determine an adiabaticity threshold

Magnetocaloric effect in Gd/W thin film heterostructures
In an effort to understand the impact of nanostructuring on the
magnetocaloric effect, we have grown and studied gadolinium in MgO/W(50
)/[Gd(400 )/W(50 )]
heterostructures. The entropy change associated with the second order magnetic
phase transition was determined from the isothermal magnetization for numerous
temperatures and the appropriate Maxwell relation. The entropy change peaks at
a temperature of 284 K with a value of approximately 3.4 J/kg-K for a 0-30 kOe
field change; the full width at half max of the entropy change peak is about 70
K, which is significantly wider than that of bulk Gd under similar conditions.
The relative cooling power of this nanoscale system is about 240 J/kg, somewhat
lower than that of bulk Gd (410 J/kg). An iterative Kovel-Fisher method was
used to determine the critical exponents governing the phase transition to be
, and . Along with a suppressed Curie temperature
relative to the bulk, the fact that the convergent value of is that
predicted by the 2-D Ising model may suggest that finite size effects play an
important role in this system. Together, these observations suggest that
nanostructuring may be a promising route to tailoring the magnetocaloric
response of materials

Active Carbon and Oxygen Shell Burning Hydrodynamics
We have simulated 2.5 s of the late evolution of a star with full hydrodynamic behavior. We present the first simulations
of a multiple-shell burning epoch, including the concurrent evolution and
interaction of an oxygen and carbon burning shell. In addition, we have evolved
a 3D model of the oxygen burning shell to sufficiently long times (300 s) to
begin to assess the adequacy of the 2D approximation. We summarize striking new
results: (1) strong interactions occur between active carbon and oxygen burning
shells, (2) hydrodynamic wave motions in nonconvective regions, generated at
the convective-radiative boundaries, are energetically important in both 2D and
3D with important consequences for compositional mixing, and (3) a spectrum of
mixed p- and g-modes are unambiguously identified with corresponding adiabatic
waves in these computational domains. We find that 2D convective motions are
exaggerated relative to 3D because of vortex instability in 3D. We discuss the
implications for supernova progenitor evolution and symmetry breaking in core

Structure and magnetic interactions in the solid solution Ba3-xSrxCr2O8
Solid solutions of the magnetic insulators Ba3Cr2O8 and Sr3Cr2O8
(Ba3-xSrxCr2O8) have been prepared in polycrystalline form for the first time.
Single crys- talline material was obtained using a mirror image floating zone
technique. X-ray diffraction data taken at room temperature indicate that the
space group of Ba3-xSrxCr2O8 remains unchanged for all values of x, while the
cell parameters depend on the chemical composition, as expected. Magnetization
data, measured from 300 K down to 2 K, suggests that the interaction constant
Jd within the Cr5+ dimers varies in a peculiar way as a function of x, starting
at Jd = 25K for x = 0, then first slightly dropping to Jd = 18K for x = 0.75,
before reaching Jd = 62K for x = 3
Uncertainties of predictions from parton distribution functions II: the Hessian method
We develop a general method to quantify the uncertainties of parton
distribution functions and their physical predictions, with emphasis on
incorporating all relevant experimental constraints. The method uses the
Hessian formalism to study an effective chi-squared function that quantifies
the fit between theory and experiment. Key ingredients are a recently developed
iterative procedure to calculate the Hessian matrix in the difficult global
analysis environment, and the use of parameters defined as components along
appropriately normalized eigenvectors. The result is a set of 2d Eigenvector
Basis parton distributions (where d=16 is the number of parton parameters) from
which the uncertainty on any physical quantity due to the uncertainty in parton
distributions can be calculated. We illustrate the method by applying it to
calculate uncertainties of gluon and quark distribution functions, W boson
rapidity distributions, and the correlation between W and Z production cross
