LArPix: Demonstration of low-power 3D pixelated charge readout for liquid argon time projection chambers
We report the demonstration of a low-power pixelated readout system designed
for three-dimensional ionization charge detection and digital readout of liquid
argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). Unambiguous 3D charge readout was
achieved using a custom-designed system-on-a-chip ASIC (LArPix) to uniquely
instrument each pad in a pixelated array of charge-collection pads. The LArPix
ASIC, manufactured in 180 nm bulk CMOS, provides 32 channels of
charge-sensitive amplification with self-triggered digitization and multiplexed
readout at temperatures from 80 K to 300 K. Using an 832-channel LArPix-based
readout system with 3 mm spacing between pads, we demonstrated low-noise
(500 e RMS equivalent noise charge) and very low-power (100
W/channel) ionization signal detection and readout. The readout was used
to successfully measure the three-dimensional ionization distributions of
cosmic rays passing through a LArTPC, free from the ambiguities of existing
projective techniques. The system design relies on standard printed circuit
board manufacturing techniques, enabling scalable and low-cost production of
large-area readout systems using common commercial facilities. This
demonstration overcomes a critical technical obstacle for operation of LArTPCs
in high-occupancy environments, such as the near detector site of the Deep
Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 1 ancillary animation. V3 includes minor

White Paper: Measuring the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy
This white paper is a condensation of a report by a committee appointed
jointly by the Nuclear Science and Physics Divisions at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory (LBNL). The goal of this study was to identify the most
promising technique(s) for resolving the neutrino mass hierarchy. For the most
part, we have relied on calculations and simulations presented by the
proponents of the various experiments. We have included evaluations of the
opportunities and challenges for these experiments based on what is available
already in the literature.Comment: White paper prepared for Snowmass-201
Constitutive turnover of histone H2A.Z at yeast promoters requires the preinitiation complex
The assembly of the preinitiation complex (PIC) occurs upstream of the +1 nucleosome which, in yeast, obstructs the transcription start site and is frequently assembled with the histone variant H2A.Z. To understand the contribution of the transcription machinery in the disassembly of the +1 H2A.Z nucleosome, conditional mutants were used to block PIC assembly. A quantitative ChIP-seq approach, which allows detection of global occupancy change, was employed to measure H2A.Z occupancy. Blocking PIC assembly resulted in promoter-specific H2A.Z accumulation, indicating that the PIC is required to evict H2A.Z. By contrast, H2A.Z eviction was unaffected upon depletion of INO80, a remodeler previously reported to displace nucleosomal H2A.Z. Robust PIC-dependent H2A.Z eviction was observed at active and infrequently transcribed genes, indicating that constitutive H2A.Z turnover is a general phenomenon. Finally, sites with strong H2A.Z turnover precisely mark transcript starts, providing a new metric for identifying cryptic and alternative sites of initiation
Two-Channel Kondo Lattice: An Incoherent Metal
The two-channel Kondo lattice model is examined with a Quantum Monte Carlo
simulation in the limit of infinite dimensions. We find non-fermi-liquid
behavior at low temperatures including a finite low-temperature single-particle
scattering rate, the lack of a fermi edge and Drude weight. However, the
low-energy density of electronic states is finite. Thus, we identify this
system as an incoherent metal. We discuss the relevance of our results for
concentrated heavy fermion metals with non-Fermi-Liquid behavior.Comment: LaTex, 5 pages, 3 Postscript files. Revision - in reference 5 and

Bank vole prion protein extends the use of RT-QuIC assays to detect prions in a range of inherited prion diseases
The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) real-time quaking-induced conversion assay (RT-QuIC) is an ultrasensitive prion amyloid seeding assay for diagnosis of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) but several prion strains remain unexplored or resistant to conversion with commonly used recombinant prion protein (rPrP) substrates. Here, bank vole (BV) rPrP was used to study seeding by a wide range of archived post-mortem human CSF samples from cases of sporadic, acquired and various inherited prion diseases in high throughput 384-well format. BV rPrP substrate yielded positive reactions in 70/79 cases of sporadic CJD [Sensitivity 88.6% (95% CI 79.5-94.7%)], 1/2 variant CJD samples, and 9/20 samples from various inherited prion diseases; 5/57 non-prion disease control CSFs had positive reactions, yielding an overall specificity of 91.2% (95% CI 80.1-97.1%). Despite limitations of using post-mortem samples and our results' discrepancy with other studies, we demonstrated for the first time that BV rPrP is susceptible to conversion by human CSF samples containing certain prion strains not previously responsive in conventional rPrPs, thus justifying further optimisation for wider diagnostic and prognostic use
Search for the Lepton-Number-Violating Decay
A sensitive search for the lepton-number-violating decay has been performed using a sample of hyperons
produced in 800 GeV/ -Cu collisions. We obtain at 90% confidence, improving on the best
previous limit by four orders of magnitude.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. Let

A single H/ACA small nucleolar RNA mediates tumor suppression downstream of oncogenic RAS.
Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are a diverse group of non-coding RNAs that direct chemical modifications at specific residues on other RNA molecules, primarily on ribosomal RNA (rRNA). SnoRNAs are altered in several cancers; however, their role in cell homeostasis as well as in cellular transformation remains poorly explored. Here, we show that specific subsets of snoRNAs are differentially regulated during the earliest cellular response to oncogenic RASG12V expression. We describe a novel function for one H/ACA snoRNA, SNORA24, which guides two pseudouridine modifications within the small ribosomal subunit, in RAS-induced senescence in vivo. We find that in mouse models, loss of Snora24 cooperates with RASG12V to promote the development of liver cancer that closely resembles human steatohepatitic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). From a clinical perspective, we further show that human HCCs with low SNORA24 expression display increased lipid content and are associated with poor patient survival. We next asked whether ribosomes lacking SNORA24-guided pseudouridine modifications on 18S rRNA have alterations in their biophysical properties. Single-molecule Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) analyses revealed that these ribosomes exhibit perturbations in aminoacyl-transfer RNA (aa-tRNA) selection and altered pre-translocation ribosome complex dynamics. Furthermore, we find that HCC cells lacking SNORA24-guided pseudouridine modifications have increased translational miscoding and stop codon readthrough frequencies. These findings highlight a role for specific snoRNAs in safeguarding against oncogenic insult and demonstrate a functional link between H/ACA snoRNAs regulated by RAS and the biophysical properties of ribosomes in cancer
ICA-SVM combination algorithm for identification of motor imagery potentials
Mental tasks such as motor imagery in synchronization with a cue which result event related desynchronization (ERD) and event related synchronization (ERS) are usually studied in brain-computer interface (BCI) system. In this paper we analyze and classify the ERD/ERS response evoked by the motor imagery of left hand, right hand, foot and tongue. The signals were spatially filtered by Independent Component Analysis (ICA) before calculating the power spectral density (PSD) for related electrodes, and then the Support Vector Machine (SVM) was adopted to recognise the different imagery pattern according to ERD/ERS feature for the signals. The results showed that the combination of ICA-based signal extraction algorithm and SVM-based classification method was an effective tool for the identification of motor imagery potentials, with the highest accuracy rate of 91.4% and 77.6% for the lowest. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2010 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications (CIMSA), Taranto, Apulia, Italy, 6-8 September 2010. Evidence for the Decay Sigma+ -> p mu+ mu-
We report the first evidence for the decay Sigma+ -> p mu+ mu- from data
taken by the HyperCP experiment(E871) at Fermilab. Based on three observed
events, the branching ratio is B(Sigma+ -> p,mu+,mu-) = [8.6 +6.6,-5.4(stat)
+/-5.5(syst)] x 10**-8. The narrow range of dimuon masses may indicate that the
decay proceeds via a neutral intermediate state, Sigma+ -> p P0, P0 -> mu+ mu-,
with a P0 mass of 214.3 +/- 0.5 MeV/c**2 and branching ratio B(Sigma+ -> p P0;
P0 -> mu+ mu-) = [3.1 +2.4,-1.(stat) +/-1.5(syst)] x 10**-8.Comment: As published in PR
