    The excess burden of cancer in men in the UK

    In general men are at significantly greater risk than women from nearly all of the common cancers that occur in both sexes (with the exception of breast cancer) (White 2009, Wilkins 2006, DH 2007). This report will consider the current overall burden of cancer among men in the UK, estimated from the latest statistics, and outline the extent of the differences between the sexes. All figures and calculations reported here are based on data extracted from the Cancer Research UK CancerStats web pages extracted in June 2009 (Cancer Research UK, 2009)

    Stripping of gas and dust from the elliptical galaxy M86

    Past observations of the x ray morphology of M86 have revealed that the galaxy is experiencing ram-pressure stripping due to its large velocity (1500 km s(-1)) relative to the intracluster medium of Virgo (Forman et al. 1979, Fabian, Schwartz, and Forman 1980). Observations indicate that the x ray emitting gas in the plume of M86 is still being produced from the continual heating of gas and dust stripped from nearer the galaxy's center. Researchers obtained two-dimensional Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) images of M86 which have revealed that there are two spatially separated regions of emission, one at 60 microns and the other at 100 microns of the IRAS wavebands. The 100 microns emission, presumably from cool dust (at approximately 20 K), appears to be located near the center of the galaxy together with HI (detected by Bregman, Roberts and Giovanelli 1988), while the 60 microns emission appears to lie more than 3 arcminutes away from the optical center in a direction slightly south of the center of the plume. Optical images produced by scanning U.K. Schmidt plates, reveal asymmetric isophotal contours along the major axis of the galaxy (first reported by Nulsen and Carter in 1987, which they propose as excess emission due to star formation). This excess optical emission is co-incident with the direction of the 60 micron infra-red emission

    The rich cluster of galaxies ABCG 85. III. Analyzing the ABCG 85/87/89 complex

    We present a combined X-ray and optical analysis of the ABCG 85/87/89 complex of clusters of galaxies, based on the ROSAT PSPC image, optical photometric catalogues (Slezak et al. 1998), and an optical redshift catalogue (Durret et al. 1998). From this combined data set, we find striking alignments at all scales at PA≃\simeq160\deg. At small scales, the cD galaxy in ABCG 85 and the brightest galaxies in the cluster are aligned along this PA. At a larger scale, X-ray emission defines a comparable PA south-southeast of ABCG 85 towards ABCG 87, with a patchy X-ray structure very different from the regular shape of the optical galaxy distribution in ABCG 87. The galaxy velocities in the ABCG 87 region show the existence of subgroups, which all have an X-ray counterpart, and seem to be falling onto ABCG 85 along a filament almost perpendicular to the plane of the sky. To the west of ABCG 85, ABCG 89 appears as a significant galaxy density enhancement, but is barely detected at X-ray wavelengths. The galaxy velocities reveal that in fact this is not a cluster but two groups with very different velocities superimposed along the line of sight. These two groups appear to be located in intersecting sheets on opposite sides of a large bubble. These data and their interpretation reinforce the cosmological scenario in which matter, including galaxies, groups and gas, falls onto the cluster along a filament.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    An investigation of cooling flows and general cluster properties from an X-ray image deprojection analysis of 207 clusters of galaxies

    We present an X-ray image deprojection analysis of Einstein Observatory imaging data on 207, clusters of galaxies. The resulting radial profiles for luminosity, temperature, and electron density variations are determined from the cluster surface-brightness profiles according to gravitational potential constraints from average Tx and Vopt observations. This enables us to determine cooling-flow and other cluster properties, such as baryon fractions, S-Z microwave decrements, and Thomson depths. We have compiled a catalogue of the detected cooling flows, and investigated their effects on general cluster properties. Self-consistent correlations between the cluster X-ray luminosity, temperature, and optical velocity-dispersion, are determined accounting for errors in both dimensions of the data. These fits indicate that the temperatures of clusters are isothermal and that they have spectral beta-values consistent with unity. We find that the X-ray Lx, Tx, and optical Vopt relations depend significantly on the cooling flow mass-deposition rate, through differences in the density profiles. Clusters of similar mass-deposition rate exhibit self-similar density profiles, with larger cooling flows showing higher central densities. This leads to scatter in the Lx related correlations within the Lx, Tx and Vopt plane. The segregation in density leads to dispersion in `half-light radii' and baryon fractions. The baryon fraction in the cores of cooling flow clusters appears to be higher, but all clusters appear to rise to a concordant value of greater than 10 percent at 1 Mpc. Thus, clusters are inconsistent with primordial nucleosynthesis baryon fraction, for a flat Universe, of 6 percent.Comment: MNRAS accepted. tex files and encapsulated figure

    Tracing the Evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei Host Galaxies Over The Last 9 Gyr of Cosmic Time

    We present the results of a combined galaxy population analysis for the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified at 0 \u3c z \u3c 1.4 within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Boötes, and DEEP2 surveys. We identified AGN in a uniform and unbiased manner at X-ray, infrared, and radio wavelengths. Supermassive black holes undergoing radiatively efficient accretion (detected as X-ray and/or infrared AGN) appear to be hosted in a separate and distinct galaxy population than AGN undergoing powerful mechanically dominated accretion (radio AGN). Consistent with some previous studies, radiatively efficient AGN appear to be preferentially hosted in modest star-forming galaxies, with little dependence on AGN or galaxy luminosity. AGN exhibiting radio-emitting jets due to mechanically dominated accretion are almost exclusively observed in massive, passive galaxies. Crucially, we now provide strong evidence that the observed host-galaxy trends are independent of redshift. In particular, these different accretion-mode AGN have remained as separate galaxy populations throughout the last 9 Gyr. Furthermore, it appears that galaxies hosting AGN have evolved along the same path as galaxies that are not hosting AGN with little evidence for distinctly separate evolution

    The Chandra X-Ray Point-Source Catalog in The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey Fields

    We present the X-ray point-source catalog produced from the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-I) observations of the combined \sim3.2 deg2 DEEP2 (XDEEP2) survey fields, which consist of four ~0.7-1.1 deg2 fields. The combined total exposures across all four XDEEP2 fields range from ~10ks-1.1Ms. We detect X-ray point-sources in both the individual ACIS-I observations and the overlapping regions in the merged (stacked) images. We find a total of 2976 unique X-ray sources within the survey area with an expected false-source contamination of ~30 sources (~1%). We present the combined logN-logS distribution of sources detected across the XDEEP2 survey fields and find good agreement with the Extended Chandra Deep Field and Chandra-COSMOS fields to f_{X,0.5-2keV}\sim2x10^{-16} erg/cm^2/s. Given the large survey area of XDEEP2, we additionally place relatively strong constraints on the logN-logS distribution at high fluxes (f_{X,0.5-2keV}\sim3x10^{-14} erg/cm^2/s), and find a small systematic offset (a factor ~1.5) towards lower source numbers in this regime, when compared to smaller area surveys. The number counts observed in XDEEP2 are in close agreement with those predicted by X-ray background synthesis models. Additionally, we present a Bayesian-style method for associating the X-ray sources with optical photometric counterparts in the DEEP2 catalog (complete to R_AB \u3c 25.2) and find that 2126 (~71.4\pm2.8%) of the 2976 X-ray sources presented here have a secure optical counterpart with a \u3c6% contamination fraction. We provide the DEEP2 optical source properties (e.g., magnitude, redshift) as part of the X-ray-optical counterpart catalog

    An Inversion Disrupting FAM134B Is Associated with Sensory Neuropathy in the Border Collie Dog Breed

    Sensory neuropathy in the Border Collie is a severe neurological disorder caused by the degeneration of sensory and, to a lesser extent, motor nerve cells with clinical signs starting between 2 and 7 months of age. Using a genome-wide association study approach with three cases and 170 breed matched controls, a suggestive locus for sensory neuropathy was identified that was followed up using a genome sequencing approach. An inversion disrupting the candidate gene FAM134B was identified. Genotyping of additional cases and controls and RNAseq analysis provided strong evidence that the inversion is causal. Evidence of cryptic splicing resulting in novel exon transcription for FAM134B was identified by RNAseq experiments. This investigation demonstrates the identification of a novel sensory neuropathy associated mutation, by mapping using a minimal set of cases and subsequent genome sequencing. Through mutation screening, it should be possible to reduce the frequency of or completely eliminate this debilitating condition from the Border Collie breed population
