    Investigation into diode pumped modelocked ND based laser oscillators for the CLIC photoinjector system

    The photo-injector system envisaged for the proposed CLIC linear e+-e- accelerator at CERN has a demanding set of specifications on output pulse structure, power and timing stability. This paper reports on results obtained with quasi-CW diode pumped laser oscillators with output stabilisation. A 300W 804nm diode array stack is used to side pump Nd:YLF (1047nm) crystals with 200μs pulses at 100Hz repetition rate. Using feedback from the laser output to control an acousto-optic loss modulator in the cavity, start-up spiking and Q-switched behaviour is suppressed. Preliminary results obtained on incorporation of a saturable absorbing mirror for passive modelocking are presented

    Motion of magnetotactic bacteria swarms in an external field

    Magnetotactic bacteria moving on circular orbits form hydrodynamically bound states. When close to a surface and with the tilting of the field in a direction close to the perpendicular to this surface these swarms move perpendicularly to the tilting angle. We describe quantitatively this motion by a continuum model with couple stress arising from the torques produced by the rotary motors of the amphitrichous magnetotactic bacteria. The model not only correctly describes the change of direction of swarm motion while inverting the tangential field but also predicts reasonable value of the torque produced by the rotary motors

    Design of feedback insensitive InP ring laser

    The optical isolators used to protect semiconductor lasers against optical feedback cannot be integrated. Therefore we propose to fabricate a laser that has a strongly reduced sensitivity to feedback. Simulations show that such a device can be realized by employing a ring laser in which the clockwise and counterclockwise modes are not coupled. To achieve unidirectional lasing, this work proposes to use an intra cavity weak optical isolator based on two phase modulators that are driven 90 degrees out of phase. Simulations show up to 3% of intensity feedback can be tolerated without any distinguishable effect on the laser light

    Poor provision of sanitary facilities in markets of lusaka district Zambia

    Background: Although provision of sanitary facilities in workplaces is an important issue, very few studies have been undertaken in this regard. Objective: This study assessed the provision of sanitary facilities for market traders and their perceptions of the provided facilities in Lusaka district Zambia. Methods: A cross-sectional study of workplace observations in 12 randomly selected markets and interviews with 386 traders, conducted in Lusaka district. Findings: The study revealed that eleven of the twelve markets provided toilets, hand-washing and drying facilities, water, urinals, soap, and toilet paper. However, most of the markets did not comply with the Zambian laws in terms of the adequacy and privacy of facilities. One market did not have any of the listed facilities. Most traders perceived facilities to be unsatisfactory and used them only because of the lack of alternatives. Poor provision of sanitary facilities was observed at markets thus predisposing its workforce and trading population to multiple public health hazards. Conclusions: The findings of this study call for urgent investments in sanitary structures and surveillance systems to guarantee the safety of the population and to promote the health of market traders as well as the community at large.publishedVersio

    Dust exposure and chronic respiratory symptoms among coffee curing workers in Kilimanjaro: a cross sectional study

    Background: Coffee processing causes organic dust exposure which may lead to development of respiratory symptoms. Previous studies have mainly focused on workers involved in roasting coffee in importing countries. This study was carried out to determine total dust exposure and respiratory health of workers in Tanzanian primary coffee-processing factories. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 79 workers in two coffee factories, and among 73 control workers in a beverage factory. Personal samples of total dust (n = 45 from the coffee factories and n = 19 from the control factory) were collected throughout the working shift from the breathing zone of the workers. A questionnaire with modified questions from the American Thoracic Society questionnaire was used to assess chronic respiratory symptoms. Differences between groups were tested by using independent t-tests and Chi square tests. Poisson Regression Model was used to estimate prevalence ratio, adjusting for age, smoking, presence of previous lung diseases and years worked in dusty factories. Results: All participants were male. The coffee workers had a mean age of 40 years and were older than the controls (31 years). Personal total dust exposure in the coffee factories were significantly higher than in the control factory (geometric mean (GM) 1.23 mg/m³, geometric standard deviation (GSD) (0.8) vs. 0.21(2.4) mg/m³). Coffee workers had significantly higher prevalence than controls for cough with sputum (23% vs. 10%; Prevalence ratio (PR); 2.5, 95% CI 1.0 - 5.9) and chest tightness (27% vs. 13%; PR; 2.4, 95% CI 1.1 - 5.2). The prevalence of morning cough, cough with and without sputum for 4 days or more in a week was also higher among coffee workers than among controls. However, these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Workers exposed to coffee dust reported more respiratory symptoms than did the controls. This might relate to their exposure to coffee dust. Interventions for reduction of dust levels and provision of respiratory protective equipment are recommended.publishedVersio

    Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) technology has revolutionized the application and fabrication of optoelectronic devices. Most affected by this development is the field of telecommunications, where both active and passive photonic devices are key components in the optical networks. PIC based optical components are cheaper to fabricate than their stand-alone counter parts, multifunctional, low energy consumers and much smaller in size. These qualities make PICs very attractive from a mass-integration point of view and they are generally viewed as the successors of electronic ICs.     High-average-power (>20-W) Nd:YVO-4 lasers mode locked by strain-compensated saturable Bragg reflectors

    Strain-compensated double InGaAs quantum-well saturable Bragg reflectors (SBR’s) with high damage thresholds have been developed for use as mode-locking elements in high-average-power neodymium lasers. Nd:YVO4 lasers have been developed with these new SBR’s, which produce transform-limited pulses of 21-ps duration at 90 MHz and an average power of 20 W in a diffraction-limited output beam. The peak pulse power at an output power of 20 W was 10.6 kW. A comparison of the operating parameters of strained single and strain-compensated double-well SBR’s indicates that the damage threshold increased by a factor of at least 2–3. Long cavity laser variants were nvestigated to assess the limitations of further power scaling. At a repetition frequency of 36-MHz stable mode-locked pulses with peak pulse powers of 24.4 kW and pulse energies of 0.6 mJ could be generated

    Importance of Conserved N-domain Residues Thr 441 , Glu 442 , Lys 515 , Arg 560 , and Leu 562 of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Ca 2+ -ATPase for MgATP Binding and Subsequent Catalytic Steps: PLASTICITY OF THE NUCLEOTIDE-BINDING SITE

    Nine single mutations were introduced to amino acid residues Thr441, Glu442, Lys515, Arg560, Cys561, and Leu562 located in the nucleotide-binding domain of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase, and the functional consequences were studied in a direct nucleotide binding assay, as well as by steady-state and transient kinetic measurements of the overall and partial reactions of the transport cycle. Some partial reaction steps were also examined in mutants with alterations to Phe487, Arg489, and Lys492. The results implicate all these residues, except Cys561, in high affinity nucleotide binding at the substrate site. Mutations Thr441 --> Ala, Glu442 --> Ala, and Leu562 --> Phe were more detrimental to MgATP binding than to ATP binding, thus pointing to a role for these residues in the binding of Mg2+ or to a difference between the interactions with MgATP and ATP. Subsequent catalytic steps were also selectively affected by the mutations, showing the involvement of the nucleotide-binding domain in these reactions. Mutation of Arg560 inhibited phosphoryl transfer but enhanced the E1PCa2 --> E2P conformational transition, whereas mutations Thr441 --> Ala, Glu442 --> Ala, Lys492 --> Leu, and Lys515 --> Ala inhibited the E1PCa2 --> E2P transition. Hydrolysis of the E2P phosphoenzyme intermediate was enhanced in Glu442 --> Ala, Lys492 --> Leu, Lys515 --> Ala, and Arg560 --> Glu. None of the mutations affected the low affinity activation by nucleotide of the phosphoenzyme-processing steps, indicating that modulatory nucleotide interacts differently from substrate nucleotide. Mutation Glu442 --> Ala greatly enhanced reaction of Lys515 with fluorescein isothiocyanate, indicating that the two residues form a salt link in the native protein
