A note on horizontal mergers in vertically related industries
We analyze horizontal mergers in vertically related industries. In a successive Cournot oligopoly model, we first compare the profitability of mergers in the upstream and in the downstream sectors. We characterize conditions on the concavities of the input supply function and the final demand function such that, ceteris paribus, an upstream merger is more protable than a downstream merger. We then provide a simple comparison of the relative losses of firms in an industry induced by a merger in the other sector when the degrees of concavity of the upstream and downstream demand functions are constant. We admitted a forty-three year old man who had initially presented at the diabetes clinic at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre with a two week history of multiple painful and swollen joints. Mid-Infrared Emission Features in the ISM: Feature-to-Feature Flux Ratios
Using a limited, but representative sample of sources in the ISM of our
Galaxy with published spectra from the Infrared Space Observatory, we analyze
flux ratios between the major mid-IR emission features (EFs) centered around
6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.3 microns, respectively. In a flux ratio-to-flux ratio
plot of EF(6.2)/EF(7.7) as a function of EF(11.3)/EF(7.7), the sample sources
form roughly a -shaped locus which appear to trace, on an overall
basis, the hardness of a local heating radiation field. But some driving
parameters other than the radiation field may also be required for a full
interpretation of this trend. On the other hand, the flux ratio of
EF(8.6)/EF(7.7) shows little variation over the sample sources, except for two
HII regions which have much higher values for this ratio due to an ``EF(8.6\um)
anomaly,'' a phenomenon clearly associated with environments of an intense
far-UV radiation field. If further confirmed on a larger database, these trends
should provide crucial information on how the EF carriers collectively respond

Modelling the effect of carbon on deformation behaviour of twinning induced plasticity steels
In this article, a physical model describing the deformation behaviour of Twinning Induced Plasticity(TWIP) steels has been extended to include the effect of carbon content. The experimental validation and the analysis show that carbon mainly controls the maximum number of dislocations piled up at the twin boundary, resulting in the increase of back-stresses (i.e. kinematic hardening) and therefore the work hardening rate. This explanation seems to be in agreement with recent TEM observations. © The Author(s) 2011. Les phénomènes de dépendance à l’environnement: réflexions sur l’autonomie humaine à partir de la clinique neurologique
Dans cet article, nous proposons d’analyser la perte d’autonomie caractérisée par les phénomènes de dépendance à l’environnement observés chez certains patients neurologiques présentant des lésions des lobes frontaux. Des propositions théoriques issues de la neuropsychologie cognitive et de la théorie de la médiation sont développées et confrontées. La démarche offre l’occasion, au plan théorique, de questionner la détérioration possible du système de la personne suite à des lésions cérébrales et, au plan méthodologique, d’interroger notre manière d’examiner ces patients en confrontant les modèles théoriques aux observations clinique

Dans cet article, les principales applications des techniques de Réalité Virtuelle en clinique neuropsychologique sont examinées. Il s\u27agit, d\u27une part, de l\u27aide à l\u27évaluation des troubles cognitifs et comportementaux secondaires aux lésions du système nerveux central et, d\u27autre part, des perspectives ouvertes dans le champ de la prise en charge rééducative de ces déficits. Pyrene-functionalized Foldamer: Structural Impact and Recognition Properties supported by Donor-Acceptor Interactions
An electroactive and luminescent foldamer based on an oligopyridine biscarboxamide skeleton was synthesized and characterised. Its conformation in the solid state proved to be strongly affected by the peripheral pyrene units.
