The Distance and Age of the SNR Kes 73 and AXP 1E 1841-045
We provide a new distance estimate to the supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 73 and
its associated anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 1841-045. 21 cm HI images and HI
absorption/ emission spectra from new VLA observations, and 13CO emission
spectra of Kes 73 and two adjacent compact HII regions (G27.276+0.148 and
G27.491+0.189) are analyzed. The HI images show prominent absorption features
associated with Kes 73 and the HII regions. The absorption appears up to the
tangent point velocity giving a lower distance limit to Kes 73 of 7.5 kpc,
which has previously been given as the upper limit. Also, G27.276+0.148 and
G27.491+0.189 are at the far kinematic distances of their radio recombination
line velocities. There is prominent HI emission in the range 80--90 km/s for
all three objects. The two HII regions show HI absorption at ~ 84 km/s, but
there is no absorption in the Kes 73 absorption spectrum. This implies an upper
distance limit of ~ 9.8 kpc to Kes 73. This corrected larger distance to Kes
73/ AXP 1E 1841-045 system leads to a refined age of the SNR of 500 to 1000 yr,

Competition, Bargaining Power, and the Cattle Cycle
Cattle production follows a dynamic cycle that has often been analyzed, and cattle markets receive much scrutiny because of the potential for buyer market power. The relationship between the two has been little studied, however. This paper provides a simple conceptual framework to study how the cattle cycle and market concentration jointly affect the bargaining power of producers and packers yielding the following main results. Not surprisingly, a larger cattle stock reduces producers' bargaining position, which results in a lower fed cattle price. More importantly, however, the cattle stock's negative effect on price is magnified by the market concentration in beef packing. Thus, the cycle itself is very importantly related to a posited cycle of bargaining power between cattle producers and beef packers. Secondly, the model also shows how beef packers may use the special feature of cattle as both consumption and capital goods to lower the cattle price by influencing cattle inventories.Livestock Production/Industries,
Palgol: A High-Level DSL for Vertex-Centric Graph Processing with Remote Data Access
Pregel is a popular distributed computing model for dealing with large-scale
graphs. However, it can be tricky to implement graph algorithms correctly and
efficiently in Pregel's vertex-centric model, especially when the algorithm has
multiple computation stages, complicated data dependencies, or even
communication over dynamic internal data structures. Some domain-specific
languages (DSLs) have been proposed to provide more intuitive ways to implement
graph algorithms, but due to the lack of support for remote access --- reading
or writing attributes of other vertices through references --- they cannot
handle the above mentioned dynamic communication, causing a class of Pregel
algorithms with fast convergence impossible to implement.
To address this problem, we design and implement Palgol, a more declarative
and powerful DSL which supports remote access. In particular, programmers can
use a more declarative syntax called chain access to naturally specify dynamic
communication as if directly reading data on arbitrary remote vertices. By
analyzing the logic patterns of chain access, we provide a novel algorithm for
compiling Palgol programs to efficient Pregel code. We demonstrate the power of
Palgol by using it to implement several practical Pregel algorithms, and the
evaluation result shows that the efficiency of Palgol is comparable with that

Precise Ages of Field Stars from White Dwarf Companions
Observational tests of stellar and Galactic chemical evolution call for the
joint knowledge of a star's physical parameters, detailed element abundances,
and precise age. For cool main-sequence (MS) stars the abundances of many
elements can be measured from spectroscopy, but ages are very hard to
determine. The situation is different if the MS star has a white dwarf (WD)
companion and a known distance, as the age of such a binary system can then be
determined precisely from the photometric properties of the cooling WD. As a
pilot study for obtaining precise age determinations of field MS stars, we
identify nearly one hundred candidates for such wide binary systems: a faint WD
whose GPS1 proper motion matches that of a brighter MS star in Gaia/TGAS with a
good parallax (). We model the WD's multi-band
photometry with the BASE-9 code using this precise distance (assumed to be
common for the pair) and infer ages for each binary system. The resulting age
estimates are precise to () for () MS-WD systems.
Our analysis more than doubles the number of MS-WD systems with precise
distances known to date, and it boosts the number of such systems with precise
age determination by an order of magnitude. With the advent of the Gaia DR2
data, this approach will be applicable to a far larger sample, providing ages
for many MS stars (that can yield detailed abundances for over 20 elements),
especially in the age range 2 to 8\,\Gyr, where there are only few known star

Quantum spin correlations in an organometallic alternating sign chain
High resolution inelastic neutron scattering is used to study excitations in
the organometallic magnet DMACuCl. The correct magnetic Hamiltonian
describing this material has been debated for many years. Combined with high
field bulk magnetization and susceptibility studies, the new results imply that
DMACuCl is a realization of the alternating
antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (AFM-FM) chain. Coupled-cluster calculations
are used to derive exchange parameters, showing that the AFM and FM
interactions have nearly the same strength. Analysis of the scattering
intensities shows clear evidence for inter-dimer spin correlations, in contrast
to existing results for conventional alternating chains. The results are

Diagnosis of Combination Faults in a Planetary Gearbox using a Modulation Signal Bispectrum based Sideband Estimator
This paper presents a novel method for diagnosing combination faults in planetary gearboxes. Vibration signals measured on the gearbox housing exhibit complicated characteristics because of multiple modulations of concurrent excitation sources, signal paths and noise. To separate these modulations accurately, a modulation signal bispectrum based sideband estimator (MSB-SE) developed recently is used to achieve a sparse representation for the complicated signal contents, which allows effective enhancement of various sidebands for accurate diagnostic information. Applying the proposed method to diagnose an industrial planetary gearbox which coexists both bearing faults and gear faults shows that the different severities of the faults can be separated reliably under different load conditions, confirming the superior performance of this MSB-SE based diagnosis scheme
Field Dependent Phase Diagram of the Quantum Spin Chain (CH3)2NH2CuCl3
Although (CH3)2NH2CuCl3 (MCCL) was first examined in the 1930's [1], there
are open questions regarding the magnetic dimensionality and nature of the
magnetic properties. MCCL is proposed to be a S=1/2 alternating ferromagnetic
antiferromagnetic spin chain alternating along the crystalline a-axis [2,3].
Proposed ferromagnetic (JFM =1.3 meV) and antiferromagnetic (JAFM =1.1 meV)
exchange constants make this system particularly interesting for experimental
study. Because JFM and JAFM are nearly identical, the system should show
competing behavior between S=1/2 (AFM) and S=1(FM) effects. We report low
temperature magnetic field dependent susceptibility, chi(H), and specific heat,
Cp, of MCCL. These provide an initial magnetic-field versus temperature phase
diagram. A zero-field phase transition consistent with long range magnetic
order is observed at T=0.9 K. The transition temperature can be reduced via
application of a magnetic field. We also present comparisons to a FM/AFM dimer
