    Adoption of improved potato varieties in Nepal

    Nepal is one of the top twenty countries where potato contributes substantially for the human diet. Enhancing adoption of improved potato varieties could impact on farmerā€™s income, household food and nutritional security. As such, using a multistage sampling procedure, a study was conducted to assess the determinants of improved potato varieties adoption in Nepal covering 180 samples in four districts, two in hills and two in Tarai region. The study revealed that; Kavre and Bardiya districts in the hills and Tarai, respectively, were dominated by improved potato varieties adoption. On the other hand, Dhankuta and Jhapa in the hills and Tarai, respectively, were dominated by local potato varieties adoption. The informal seed sources followed by agro-vet and market were the major sources for improved varietal adoption. Farmersā€™ accesses to training and formal seed sources were important factor determining improved potato varietal adoption. However, households with larger farm size were less likely to allocate more area for improved potato varieties as many of farmers were reluctant to take potato cultivation as agri-business and still follow subsistence farming. Potato R&D programs, therefore, need to strengthen formal seed system to enhance access to quality potato seeds and build producerā€™s capacity through regular training and exposer visits in order to improve adoption of improved potato varieties in Nepal

    The Implications of Insurance Status on Presentation, Surgical Management and Mortality among Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients in Indiana

    Background The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program seeks to reduce health care disparities by providing uninsured and underinsured women access to screening mammograms. The objective of this study is to identify the differences in presentation, surgical management, and mortality among nonmetastatic uninsured patients diagnosed through Indiana's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program compared with patients with private and government (Medicare or Medicaid) insurance. Methods Study data were obtained using the Indiana state cancer registry and Indiana's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. Women aged 50 to 64 with an index diagnosis of stage 0 to III breast cancer from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2013, were included in the study. Bivariate intergroup analysis was conducted. Kaplan-Meier estimates between insurance types were compared using the log rank test. All-cause mortality was evaluated using a mixed effects model. Results The groups differed significantly for sociodemographic and clinical variables. Uninsured Indiana Breast and Cervical Cancer Program patients presented with later disease stage (P < .001) and had the highest overall mortality (hazard ratio 2.2, Pā€Æ=ā€Æ.003). Surgical management only differed among stage III patients (Pā€Æ=ā€Æ.012). Conclusion To improve insurance-based disparities in Indiana, implementation of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program in conjunction with expansion of insurance coverage to vulnerable low-income populations need to be optimized

    Analysis of Chlorophyll Content and Its Correlation with Yield Attributing Traits on Early Varieties of Maize (Zea Mays L.)

    Chlorophyll has direct roles on photosynthesis and hence closely relates to capacity for photosynthesis, development and yield of crops. With object to explore the roles of chlorophyll content and its relation with other yield attributing traits a field research was conducted using fourteen early genotypes of maize in RCBD design with three replications. Observations were made for Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) reading, ear weight, number of kernel row/ear, number of kernel/row, five hundred kernel weight and grain yield/hectare and these traits were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and correlation coefficient analysis. SPAD reading showed a non-significant variation among the genotypes while it revealed significant correlation with no. of kernel/row, grain yield/hectare and highly significant correlation with no. of kernel row/ear and ear weight which are the most yield determinative traits. For the trait grain yield/ha followed by number of kernel row/ear genotype ARUN-1EV has been found comparatively superior to ARUN-2 (standard check). Grain Yield/hectare was highly heritable (&gt;0.6) while no. of kernel / row, SPAD reading, ear weight, number of kernel row/ear were moderately heritable (0.3-0.6). Correlation analysis and ANOVA revealed ARUN-1EV, comparatively superior to ARUN-2 (standard check), had higher SPAD reading than mean SPAD reading with significant correlation with no. of kernel/row, no. of kernel row/ear, ear weight and grain yield/ha which are all yield determinative traits .     Simulation of Yield and Environmental Impacts of Wheat after Rice in Bangladesh and Australia

    CERES-wheat and SWAGMAN Destiny models, respectively, were used to estimate the optimum time of sowing, and trade-off between yield and net recharge of the watertable, for wheat grown after rice in northern Bangladesh and southern NSW, Australia. Simulated wheat yields in Bangladesh, for sowings from Sept to Jan, with two supplemental irrigations, ranged from 0.4 to 4.6 t/ha. November-sown crops yielded more than the earlier- or later-sown crops due to reduced water and heat stress during grain filling. In Australia, simulated yields of non-irrigated wheat were always greater for April than June sowings due to less water deficit at the end of the season. With an initial shallow (0.5 m), fresh (1 dS/m) watertable, simulated yields usually exceeded 3 t/ha, and declined as watertable salinity increased. Nonirrigated wheat almost always lowered the watertable. Frequent irrigation increased simulated yields to 5-6 t/ha, regardless of initial conditions and sowing date, but this was at the cost of decreased discharge or increased recharge leading to rising watertables

    Lessons for promotion of new agricultural technology: a case of Vijay wheat variety in Nepal

    It seems that the current production of Vijayā€™s breeder seed is more than enough to cultivate in total wheat area in Terai of Nepal if proper seed cycle is maintained. But this is not in reality. NARC should decentralized foundation seed to private actors such as private seed companies, national seed companies and community-based organizations to maximize the resource use efficiency in the seed cycle through introducing effective monitoring and technical backstopping mechanism from public sector. Therefore, the close coordination and commitment of the public and private seed companies, community seed groups, cooperatives and public extension agencies to multiply seeds in subsequent cycles is required. Moreover, awareness program about superiority of Vijay with other improved wheat varieties should be emphasized for the rapid commercialization of the Vijay seed which would be an instrumental to mitigate the potential epidemics of newly emerging pathotype of stem rust (Ug99) in the future

    Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation and Flutter in Liver Transplantation: An Important Predictor of Early and Late Morbidity and Mortality

    Postoperative atrial fibrillation/flutter (POAF) is the most common perioperative arrhythmia and may be particularly problematic after liver transplantation (LT). This study is a singleā€center retrospective analysis of POAF to determine its incidence following LT, to identify risk factors, to assess its impact on clinical outcomes, and to summarize management strategies. The records of all patients who underwent LT between 2010 and 2018 were reviewed. Extracted data included preā€LT demographics and cardiac evaluation, inā€hospital postā€LT cardiac events, early and late complications, and survival. Among 1011 patients, the incidence of postā€LT POAF was 10%. Using binary logistic regression, preā€LT history of atrial fibrillation was the strongest predictor of POAF (odds ratio [OR], 6.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.00ā€22.57; P < 0.001), followed by history of coronary artery disease (CAD; OR, 2.52; 95% CI, 1.10ā€5.81; P = 0.03). Cardiac stress testing abnormality and CAD on cardiac catheterization were also associated with higher risk. Median time to POAF onset after LT was 3 days with 72% of cases resolving within 48 hours. POAF patients had greater hospital length of stay, death during the LT admission, and 90ā€day and 1ā€year mortality. POAF was an independent risk factor for postā€LT mortality (OR, 2.0; 95% CI, 1.3ā€3.0; P < 0.01). Amiodarone was administered to 73% of POAF patients with no evidence of increased serum alanine aminotransferase levels. POAF occurred in 10% of postā€LT patients with early onset and rapid resolution in most affected patients. POAF patients, however, had significant morbidity and mortality, suggesting that POAF is an important marker for worse early and late postā€LT outcomes

    Surface air temperature trends in Kathmandu Valley for 2011-2017

    In this study, we reviewed the maximum and minimum temperature trends of the Kathmandu valley over the period of 2011-2017. In addition, the average monthly temperature trends were studied annually for the same period, with the data made available from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) of Nepal. The annual temperature trended in the same direction, with winter temperatures being lower and summer temperatures being higher. The annual average minimum and maximum air temperature trends were found to be slightly rising at 0.097ĖšC/year and 0.04ĖšC/year, respectively. The mean air temperature in Kathmandu valley is increasing at a rate of 0.06 degrees Celsius per year, with 2016 being the warmest year and 2012 being the least warm, with annual mean temperatures of 19.82ĖšC and 19.32ĖšC, respectively. The temperature difference is much smaller in the summer (less than ~12ĖšC) than in the winter.Ā  BIBECHANA 18 (2) (2021) 95-10
