Application of LANDSAT data to delimitation of avalanche hazards in Montane, Colorado

    Get PDF
The author has identified the following significant results. Photointerpretation of individual avalanche paths on single band black and white LANDSAT images is greatly hindered by terrain shadows and the low spatial resolution of the LANDSAT system. Maps produced in this way are biased towards the larger avalanche paths that are under the most favorable illumination conditions during imaging; other large avalanche paths, under less favorable illumination, are often not detectable and the smaller paths, even those defined by sharp trimlines, are only rarely identifiable

Not Just a Symbol But a Status Symbol

I create art, not out of a deep understanding of the world around me, but out of a lack of one. Human psychology, motives, behaviors, stressors, intentions and identity are the themes that boggle me the most. Therefore, it is only natural that my work would be fueled by the questions these themes pose. In the past I sought to understand what pushes people to make certain choices and how can the world around us affect the formation of identity. Currently I wonder about identity in terms of what do people use to form and reinforce identity both real and fabricated. In addition to this I am working through the question of what creates worth for an object; it’s function or its fabricated identity. Through the use of photography, video, sculpture and installation I explore the possibilities of questions and also understandings that my work can create

Groundwater Policy in the Western United States

    Get PDF
Groundwater mining is inadequately addressed by state and federal policies in the United States. New Mexico\u27s failure to manage groundwater aquifers has resulted in costly federal rescue projects. Better information and involvement of communities in groundwater policy would provide for more sustainable use of this resource

Treatment Agreements, Informed Consent and the Role of State Medical Boards in Opioid Prescribing

Author's manuscript.Prescription opioid abuse has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. As a result, states have implemented policies to help reduce prescription opioid abuse and misuse through prescribing rules enforced by state licensing boards. In at least one state, the medical board has mandated the use of treatment agreements for any patients receiving opioid medications from their physicians. These agreements require physicians to urine or saliva test patients annually for drug abuse and to engage in pill counts or other methods of determining drug abuse and allow for those findings to be turned over to law enforcement, if necessary. Treatment agreements, particularly those containing these provisions, should not be adopted by state medical boards. The negative effects on the physician-patient relationship and trust in the medical encounter and the lack of evidence to suggest agreements will be effective in reducing prescription drug abuse do not support their use as a population-based strategy to prevent prescription opioid abuse

Assessing Student Performance Using Video Recordings in Field-Based Experiences

    Get PDF
Field-based experiences are vital components of many undergraduate programs. However, assessing student performance in these settings can be challenging. Video-based observation is an approach to providing performance feedback that addresses these challenges and may also provide benefits not inherent in live observations. Using examples from our teacher preparation programs, we (a) explain the benefits and challenges of using video recordings in field-based experiences; (b) identify the video recording platform we use; (c) describe specific examples in our program, including supervisor performance feedback to preservice teachers, peer feedback/coaching, and instructor feedback on in-home family coaching; and (d) address the logistics of using video recording, including training and getting permissions

Psychosocial Support During Pregnancy: A Narrative Inquiry of Low-Income Unmarried Women in Iowa

    Get PDF
Pregnant women who experience high levels of stress and who lack support are at higher risk for negative birth outcomes for themselves and their offspring including preterm labor, low birthweights, and a myriad of other short- and long-term health and behavioral consequences across the lifespan of the child. Unmarried or socioeconomically disadvantaged women lack the most common resources used to protect against the negative effects of stress during pregnancy. A research gap existed regarding the specific types of psychosocial support perceived by low-income unmarried women to be most beneficial at buffering their perceived prenatal stress. The ecological model and the stress buffering theory provided the framework for the study. The purpose of this qualitative, narrative study was to explore which types of psychosocial support are preferred by low-income unmarried women to buffer against stress during pregnancy. Women were interviewed in focus groups and individually, and social media posts were examined. Inductive narrative analysis was used to extract three overarching themes. Study findings indicate that lack of support from the baby’s father coupled with barriers to health education correlate with an insufficient means to buffer stress during pregnancy for low-income unmarried women living in Iowa. This research has the potential to create social change by providing data that can guide the development of health education programs, interventions, and materials, which may decrease prenatal stress through buffering, improve birth outcomes, and decrease the risk for unintentional harm caused by uninformed prenatal interventions
