    Investigation into membrane fouling from algae-containing waters

    Surface waters subject to algal blooms have a high rate of fouling water treatment filtration membrane. These waters typically contain high concentrations of hydrophilic organic carbon compounds such as proteins and polysaccharides. These compounds have been found to contribute greatly to membrane fouling. In this study the fouling propensity, and the components of the fouling layer, for microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, were characterised for samples taken from a wastewater treatment plant with lagoons prone to algal blooms and a blue-green algae culture (Anabaena circinalis). It was found that the organic carbon compounds released during the growth phase (EOM) of Anabaena circinalis have a similar fouling propensity for UF than those released during the lysis phase (AOM), and a slightly higher fouling propensity for MF. However, due to the presence of higher UV-absorbing hydrophilic compounds, higher concentration of intracellular proteins and/or humic acid-like matter in the AOM, irreversible fouling was significantly higher during the lysis phase

    Uppermost mantle (Pn) velocity model for the Afar region, Ethiopia: an insight into rifting processes

    The Afar Depression, Ethiopia, offers unique opportunities to study the transition from continental rifting to oceanic spreading because the process is occurring onland. Using traveltime tomography and data from a temporary seismic deployment, we describe the first regional study of uppermost mantle P-wave velocities (VPn). We find two separate low VPn zones (as low as 7.2 km s−1) beneath regions of localized thinned crust in northern Afar, indicating the existence of high temperatures and, potentially, partial melt. The zones are beneath and off-axis from, contemporary crustal magma intrusions in active magmatic segments, the Dabbahu-Manda-Hararo and Erta'Ale segments. This suggests that these intrusions can be fed by off-axis delivery of melt in the uppermost mantle and that discrete areas of mantle upwelling and partial melting, thought to characterize segmentation of the uppermost mantle at seafloor spreading centres, are initiated during the final stages of break-up

    Complete physical simulation of the entangling-probe attack on the BB84 protocol

    We have used deterministic single-photon two qubit (SPTQ) quantum logic to implement the most powerful individual-photon attack against the Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) quantum key distribution protocol. Our measurement results, including physical source and gate errors, are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for the Renyi information obtained by Eve as a function of the errors she imparts to Alice and Bob's sifted key bits. The current experiment is a physical simulation of a true attack, because Eve has access to Bob's physical receiver module. This experiment illustrates the utility of an efficient deterministic quantum logic for performing realistic physical simulations of quantum information processing functions.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    State dependent dissociation of HERG channel inhibitors

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Inhibition of HERG channels prolongs the ventricular action potential and the QT interval with the risk of torsade de pointes arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Many drugs induce greater inhibition of HERG channels when the cell membrane is depolarized frequently. The dependence of inhibition on the pulsing rate may yield different IC(50) values at different frequencies and thus affect the quantification of HERG channel block. We systematically compared the kinetics of HERG channel inhibition and recovery from block by 8 blockers at different frequencies. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: HERG channels were expressed heterologously in Xenopus oocytes and currents were measured with the two-electrode voltage clamp technique. KEY RESULTS: Frequency-dependent block was observed for amiodarone, cisapride, droperidol and haloperidol (group 1) whereas bepridil, domperidone, E-4031 and terfenadine (group 2) induced similar pulse-dependent block at all frequencies. With the group 1 compounds, HERG channels recovered from block in the presence of drug (recovery being voltage-dependent). No substantial recovery from block was observed with the second group of compounds. Washing out of bepridil, domperidone, E-4031 and terfenadine was substantially augmented by frequent pulsing. Mutation D540K in the HERG channel (which exhibits reopening at negative voltages) facilitated recovery from block by these compounds at −140 mV. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Drug molecules dissociate at different rates from open and closed HERG channels (‘use-dependent' dissociation). Our data suggest that apparently ‘trapped' drugs (group 2) dissociated from the open channel state whereas group 1 compounds dissociated from open and resting states

    CD28 and the Tyrosine Kinase Lck Stimulate Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Activity in T Cells via Inhibition of the Small G Protein Rap1

    Proliferation of T cells via activation of the T-cell receptor (TCR) requires concurrent engagement of accessory costimulatory molecules to achieve full activation. The best-studied costimulatory molecule, CD28, achieves these effects, in part, by augmenting signals from the TCR to the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascade. We show here that TCR-mediated stimulation of MAP kinase extracellular-signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) is limited by activation of the Ras antagonist Rap1. CD28 increases ERK signaling by blocking Rap1 action. CD28 inhibits Rap1 activation because it selectively stimulates an extrinsic Rap1 GTPase activity. The ability of CD28 to stimulate Rap1 GTPase activity was dependent on the tyrosine kinase Lck. Our results suggest that CD28-mediated Rap1 GTPase-activating protein activation can help explain the augmentation of ERKs during CD28 costimulation

    Influence of boundaries on pattern selection in through-flow

    The problem of pattern selection in absolutely unstable open flow systems is investigated by considering the example of Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection. The spatiotemporal structure of convection rolls propagating downstream in an externally imposed flow is determined for six different inlet/outlet boundary conditions. Results are obtained by numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations and by comparison with the corresponding Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation. A unique selection process is observed being a function of the control parameters and the boundary conditions but independent of the history and the system length. The problem can be formulated in terms of a nonlinear eigen/boundary value problem where the frequency of the propagating pattern is the eigenvalue.     Bodies, technologies and action possibilities: when is an affordance?

    Borrowed from ecological psychology, the concept of affordances is often said to offer the social study of technology a means of re-framing the question of what is, and what is not, ‘social’ about technological artefacts. The concept, many argue, enables us to chart a safe course between the perils of technological determinism and social constructivism. This article questions the sociological adequacy of the concept as conventionally deployed. Drawing on ethnographic work on the ways technological artefacts engage, and are engaged by, disabled bodies, we propose that the ‘affordances’ of technological objects are not reducible to their material constitution but are inextricably bound up with specific, historically situated modes of engagement and ways of life

    The title compound, C15H22O3, was prepared via amino-acid-promoted Robinson annulation followed by tandem Pd/C-mediated hydrogenation and oxidative cyclization. This product was instrumental in determining the feasibility of a stereocontrolled hydrogenation in which the directing hydroxyl group is adjacent to the 6–7-ring network and its olefinic component. The asymmetric unit consists of a single mol­ecule with normal geometric parameters. The absolute configuration was assigned based on the known enanti­omeric prescursor.
