Development of a dual-field heteropoplar power converter
The design and testing of a 400 watt, dual phase, dual rotor, field modulated inductor alternator is described. The system is designed for use as a flywheel to ac utility line or flywheel to dc bus (electric vehicle) power converter. The machine is unique in that it uses dual rotors and separately controlled fields to produce output current and voltage which are in phase with each other. Having the voltage and current in phase allows the power electronics to be made of simple low cost components. Based on analytical predictions and experimental results, development of a complete 22 kilowatt (30 Hp) power conversion system is recommended. This system would include power electronics and controls and would replace the inductor alternator with an improved electromagnetic conversion system
Photonic-crystal slabs with a triangular lattice of triangular holes investigated using a guided-mode expansion method
According to a recent proposal [S. Takayama et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 87,
061107 (2005)], the triangular lattice of triangular air holes may allow to
achieve a complete photonic band gap in two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs.
In this work we present a systematic theoretical study of this photonic lattice
in a high-index membrane, and a comparison with the conventional triangular
lattice of circular holes, by means of the guided-mode expansion method whose
detailed formulation is described here. Photonic mode dispersion below and
above the light line, gap maps, and intrinsic diffraction losses of
quasi-guided modes are calculated for the periodic lattice as well as for line-
and point-defects defined therein. The main results are summarized as follows:
(i) the triangular lattice of triangular holes does indeed have a complete
photonic band gap for the fundamental guided mode, but the useful region is
generally limited by the presence of second-order waveguide modes; (ii) the
lattice may support the usual photonic band gap for even modes (quasi-TE
polarization) and several band gaps for odd modes (quasi-TM polarization),
which could be tuned in order to achieve doubly-resonant frequency conversion
between an even mode at the fundamental frequency and an odd mode at the
second-harmonic frequency; (iii) diffraction losses of quasi-guided modes in
the triangular lattices with circular and triangular holes, and in line-defect
waveguides or point-defect cavities based on these geometries, are comparable.
The results point to the interest of the triangular lattice of triangular holes
for nonlinear optics, and show the usefulness of the guided-mode expansion
method for calculating photonic band dispersion and diffraction losses,
especially for higher-lying photonic modes.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Conservation status of caribou in the western mountains of Canada: Protections under the species at risk act, 2002-2014
In April 2014, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) reviewed the status of caribou in the western mountains of Canada, in keeping with the ten-year reassessment mandate under the Species at Risk Act. Assessed as two ‘nationally significant’ populations in 2002, COSEWIC revised the conservation units for all caribou in Canada, recognising eleven extant Designatable Units (DUs), three of which -- Northern Mountain, Central Mountain, and Southern Mountain -- are found only in western Canada. The 2014 assessment concluded that the condition of many subpopulations in all three DUs had deteriorated. As a result of small and declining population sizes, the Central Mountain and Southern Mountain DUs are now recognised as endangered. Recent declines in a number of Northern Mountain DU subpopulations did not meet thresholds for endangered or threatened, and were assessed as of special concern. Since the passage of the federal Species at Risk Act in 2002, considerable areas of habitat were managed or conserved for caribou, although disturbance from cumulative human development activities has increased during the same period. Government agencies and local First Nations are attempting to arrest the steep decline of some subpopulations by using predator control, maternal penning, population augmentation, and captive breeding. Based on declines, future developments and current recovery effects, we offer the following recommendations: 1) where recovery actions are necessary, commit to simultaneously reducing human intrusion into caribou ranges, restoring habitat over the long term, and conducting short-term predator control, 2) carefully consider COSEWIC’s new DU structure for management and recovery actions, especially regarding translocations, 3) carry out regular surveys to monitor the condition of Northern Mountain caribou subpopulations and immediately implement preventative measures where necessary, and 4) undertake a proactive, planned approach coordinated across jurisdictions to conserve landscape processes important to caribou conservation
Few-anyon systems in a parabolic dot
The energy levels of two and three anyons in a two-dimensional parabolic
quantum dot and a perpendicular magnetic field are computed as power series in
1/|J|, where J is the angular momentum. The particles interact repulsively
through a coulombic (1/r) potential. In the two-anyon problem, the reached
accuracy is better than one part in 10^5. For three anyons, we study the
combined effects of anyon statistics and coulomb repulsion in the ``linear''

Renormalization of the elementary excitations in hole- and electron-doped cuprates due to spin fluctuations
Extending our previous studies we present results for the doping-, momentum-,
frequency-, and temperature- dependence of the kink-like change of the
quasiparticle velocity resulting from the coupling to spin fluctuations. In the
nodal direction a kink is found in both the normal and superconducting state
while in the antinodal direction a kink occurs only below due to the
opening of the superconducting gap. A pronounced kink is obtained only for
hole-doped, but not for electron-doped cuprates and is characteristically
different from what is expected due to electron-phonon interaction. We further
demonstrate that the kink structure is intimately connected to the resonance
peak seen in inelastic neutron scattering. Our results suggest similar effects

G-Quadruplex Dynamics Contribute To Regulation Of Mitochondrial Gene Expression
Single-stranded DNA or RNA sequences rich in guanine (G) can adopt non-canonical structures known as G-quadruplexes (G4). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences that are predicted to form G4 are enriched on the heavy-strand and have been associated with formation of deletion breakpoints. Increasing evidence supports the ability of mtDNA to form G4 in cancer cells; however, the functional roles of G4 structures in regulating mitochondrial nucleic acid homeostasis in non-cancerous cells remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate by live cell imaging that the G4-ligand RHPS4 localizes primarily to mitochondria at low doses. We find that low doses of RHPS4 do not induce a nuclear DNA damage response but do cause an acute inhibition of mitochondrial transcript elongation, leading to respiratory complex depletion. We also observe that RHPS4 interferes with mtDNA levels or synthesis both in cells and isolated mitochondria. Importantly, a mtDNA variant that increases G4 stability and anti-parallel G4-forming character shows a stronger respiratory defect in response to RHPS4, supporting the conclusion that mitochondrial sensitivity to RHPS4 is G4-mediated. Taken together, our results indicate a direct role for G4 perturbation in mitochondrial genome replication, transcription processivity, and respiratory function in normal cells
Auriculotemporal Nerve Block for TMJ: A Systematic Review
The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate auriculotemporal nerve blocks for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder management. 583 articles reviewed from five databases, selected four studies for pooled analysis on visual analog scale (VAS) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) outcomes. Pooled analysis showed significant improvement in VAS (-2.27, p \u3c 0.001) and MMO (0.94, p = 0.03) post-auriculotemporal nerve blocks for TMJ disorder. Auriculotemporal nerve blocks demonstrate potential effectiveness in TMJ disorder treatment, warranting further research on long-term effects and side effects
A dual process account of creative thinking
This article explicates the potential role played by type 1 thinking (automatic, fast) and type 2 thinking (effortful, logical) in creative thinking. The relevance of Evans's (2007) models of conflict of dual processes in thinking is discussed with regards to creative thinking. The role played by type 1 thinking and type 2 thinking during the different stages of creativity (problem finding and conceptualization, incubation, illumination, verification and dissemination) is discussed. It is proposed that although both types of thinking are active in creativity, the extent to which they are active and the nature of their contribution to creativity will vary between stages of the creative process. Directions for future research to test this proposal are outlined; differing methodologies and the investigation of different stages of creative thinking are discussed. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
Profiles of physical, emotional and psychosocial wellbeing in the Lothian birth cohort 1936
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Physical, emotional, and psychosocial wellbeing are important domains of function. The aims of this study were to explore the existence of separable groups among 70-year olds with scores representing physical function, perceived quality of life, and emotional wellbeing, and to characterise any resulting groups using demographic, personality, cognition, health and lifestyle variables.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify possible groups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Results suggested there were 5 groups. These included High (n = 515, 47.2% of the sample), Average (n = 417, 38.3%), and Poor Wellbeing (n = 37, 3.4%) groups. The two other groups had contrasting patterns of wellbeing: one group scored relatively well on physical function, but low on emotional wellbeing (Good Fitness/ Low Spirits,n = 60, 5.5%), whereas the other group showed low physical function but relatively well emotional wellbeing (Low Fitness/Good Spirits, n = 62, 5.7%). Salient characteristics that distinguished all the groups included smoking and drinking behaviours, personality, and illness.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Despite there being some evidence of these groups, the results also support a largely one-dimensional construct of wellbeing in old age—for the domains assessed here—though with some evidence that some individuals have uneven profiles.</p
