Geometric and dynamic perspectives on phase-coherent and noncoherent chaos
Statistically distinguishing between phase-coherent and noncoherent chaotic
dynamics from time series is a contemporary problem in nonlinear sciences. In
this work, we propose different measures based on recurrence properties of
recorded trajectories, which characterize the underlying systems from both
geometric and dynamic viewpoints. The potentials of the individual measures for
discriminating phase-coherent and noncoherent chaotic oscillations are
discussed. A detailed numerical analysis is performed for the chaotic R\"ossler
system, which displays both types of chaos as one control parameter is varied,
and the Mackey-Glass system as an example of a time-delay system with
noncoherent chaos. Our results demonstrate that especially geometric measures
from recurrence network analysis are well suited for tracing transitions
between spiral- and screw-type chaos, a common route from phase-coherent to
noncoherent chaos also found in other nonlinear oscillators. A detailed
explanation of the observed behavior in terms of attractor geometry is given.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure
The impact of asking intention or self-prediction questions on subsequent behavior: a meta-analysis
The current meta-analysis estimated the magnitude of the impact of asking intention and self-prediction questions on rates of subsequent behavior, and examined mediators and moderators of this question–behavior effect (QBE). Random-effects meta-analysis on 116 published tests of the effect indicated that intention/prediction questions have a small positive effect on behavior (d+ = 0.24). Little support was observed for attitude accessibility, cognitive dissonance, behavioral simulation, or processing fluency explanations of the QBE. Multivariate analyses indicated significant effects of social desirability of behavior/behavior domain (larger effects for more desirable and less risky behaviors), difficulty of behavior (larger effects for easy-to-perform behaviors), and sample type (larger effects among student samples). Although this review controls for co-occurrence of moderators in multivariate analyses, future primary research should systematically vary moderators in fully factorial designs. Further primary research is also needed to unravel the mechanisms underlying different variants of the QBE
Effects of non-denumerable fixed points in finite dynamical systems
The motion of a spinning football brings forth the possible existence of a
whole class of finite dynamical systems where there may be non-denumerably
infinite number of fixed points. They defy the very traditional meaning of the
fixed point that a point on the fixed point in the phase space should remain
there forever, for, a fixed point can evolve as well! Under such considerations
one can argue that a free-kicked football should be non-chaotic.Comment: This paper is a replaced version to modify the not-so-true claim,
made unknowingly in the earlier version, of being first to propose the
peculiar dynamical systems as described in the paper. With respect to the

Visualizing the logistic map with a microcontroller
The logistic map is one of the simplest nonlinear dynamical systems that
clearly exhibit the route to chaos. In this paper, we explored the evolution of
the logistic map using an open-source microcontroller connected to an array of
light emitting diodes (LEDs). We divided the one-dimensional interval
into ten equal parts, and associated and LED to each segment. Every time an
iteration took place a corresponding LED turned on indicating the value
returned by the logistic map. By changing some initial conditions of the

Persistent Chaos in High Dimensions
An extensive statistical survey of universal approximators shows that as the
dimension of a typical dissipative dynamical system is increased, the number of
positive Lyapunov exponents increases monotonically and the number of parameter
windows with periodic behavior decreases. A subset of parameter space remains
in which topological change induced by small parameter variation is very
common. It turns out, however, that if the system's dimension is sufficiently
high, this inevitable, and expected, topological change is never catastrophic,
in the sense chaotic behavior is preserved. One concludes that deterministic

Ultrasound assessment of transversus abdominis muscle contraction ratio during abdominal hollowing: a useful tool to distinguish between patients with chronic low back pain and healthy controls?
Spine stabilisation exercises, in which patients are taught to preferentially activate the transversus abdominus (TrA) during "abdominal hollowing” (AH), are a popular treatment for chronic low back pain (cLBP). The present study investigated whether performance during AH differed between cLBP patients and controls to an extent that would render it useful diagnostic tool. 50patients with cLBP (46.3±12.5years) and 50healthy controls (43.6±12.7years) participated in this case-control study. They performed AH in hook-lying. Using M-mode ultrasound, thicknesses of TrA, and obliquus internus and externus were determined at rest and during 5s AH (5measures each body side). The TrA contraction-ratio (TrA-CR) (TrA contracted/rest) and the ability to sustain the contraction [standard deviation (SD) of TrA thickness during the stable phase of the hold] were investigated. There were no significant group differences for the absolute muscle thicknesses at rest or during AH, or for the SD of TrA thickness. There was a small but significant difference between the groups for TrA-CR: cLBP 1.35±0.14, controls 1.44±0.24 (p<0.05). However, Receiver Operator Characteristics (ROC) analysis revealed a poor and non-significant ability of TrA-CR to discriminate between cLBP patients and controls on an individual basis (ROC area under the curve, 0.60 [95% CI 0.495; 0.695], p=0.08). In the patient group, TrA-CR showed a low but significant correlation with Roland Morris score (Spearman Rho=0.328; p=0.02). In conclusion, the difference in group mean values for TrA-CR was small and of uncertain clinical relevance. Moreover, TrA-CR showed a poor ability to discriminate between control and cLBP subjects on an individual basis.
